Mo Jiushang, tired of his companions' nagging, stepped out for fresh air and overheard a woman fiercely rejecting a lecherous man. He recognized the woman as Ji Ning, the same one he slept with five years ago. To her surprise, he directly asked her to sleep with him again, referencing their past encounter and offering payment. Ji Ning vehemently refused, reminding him she wasn't a prostitute and that their previous encounter was a mistake. Confused but resolute, Mo Jiushang later told his companions that he had found the woman who would give birth to his child.

After concluding her morning run, Ruan Bao’er received a sudden telephone call from Ruan Qinghe.

“Bao’er, come home for dinner this evening.”

“Dad… is Elder Ruan there?”

A hint of weariness tinged Ruan Qinghe’s voice upon hearing the unfamiliar address. “I’ve raised you for over twenty years, Bao’er. Even if you aren’t my biological daughter, the affection I hold for you after all this time is undeniably genuine.”

Wiping the sweat from her brow, Ruan Bao’er offered a bitter smile and remained silent. She thought about how her name itself suggested the deep love her family held for her. If she hadn't been born to her mother, she believed Father Ruan would have treated her as his own, regardless of blood ties. However, she couldn't help but wonder which man could truly accept a child conceived from his wife's infidelity.

Ruan Qinghe sighed again. “Father isn’t here tonight. It will just be your sister-in-law and me.”

Ruan Qinghe had gotten married the previous year. His wife hailed from an esteemed family, and their relationship was characterized by mutual respect.

“Very well, I’ll head over shortly then.”

“I’ll be waiting for you.”

After a refreshing cold shower, Ruan Bao’er was on her way out when she spotted Xing Si leaning against a nearby tree.

“Heading home?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll drive you.”

Without awaiting her confirmation, Xing Si began to walk away. It had been five years since Fu Ya’s unfortunate accident, and Xing Si had consistently remained by Ruan Bao’er’s side during her training runs. This time, he had accompanied her for five years in total.

They entered Xing Si’s Hummer and soon arrived at the Yuan family residence.

“You can head in now. Drive safely on your way back,” Ruan Bao’er said as she exited the vehicle. She waved goodbye to Xing Si before turning to enter the house.

Xing Si watched until she was out of sight. He then drove his car to a secluded spot and lit a cigarette.

“Brother, Sister-in-law.”

Ruan Bao’er and Ruan Qinghe had not been reunited for over two months. The Ruan Bao’er before him was no longer the innocent, naive girl he remembered. Her previously round, apple-like face had taken on a more mature, oval shape, and her eyes now held a depth of maturity and composure.

A tinge of sadness crossed Ruan Qinghe’s face as he forced a smile. “I’ve asked the chef to prepare your favorite dishes. Let’s eat together.”

“Okay.”

The trio proceeded to the dining room. Ruan Qinghe broke the silence with some cheerful news. “I have some wonderful news for you. Lin Wanwan has finally secured that little gold medal! The announcement should be made public tomorrow. She’s achieved career success and now has a happy family life. She’s a year older than you, you know, so you should really consider working harder.”

“I’ve been working hard!” Ruan Bao’er voiced her mild protest. “I am currently Sister Ball’s personal makeup artist. Plenty of renowned celebrities are trying to poach me. It’s more than enough to support myself.”

“Is that all you consider ‘hard work’?”

“My individual pursuits are different,” she replied.

As their conversation flowed, the atmosphere in the room gradually warmed.

Once the meal concluded, Ruan Bao’er stood, preparing to depart.

“Bao’er, it’s been so long since you visited. Please, stay a while longer,” Ruan Qinghe urged, a touch of reluctance in his tone.

Ruan Bao’er glanced at the clock and silently shook her head.

Understanding her reservations, Ruan Qinghe could only concede.

As Ruan Bao’er was changing her shoes, she encountered Father Ruan. His expression immediately darkened upon seeing her. “How dare you show your face at the Ruan family home? Get out!”

A sharp pain pierced Ruan Bao’er’s heart as she felt the icy coldness radiating from his gaze. Just as she had suspected, her father no longer viewed her as his daughter.

“Father!” Ruan Qinghe hurried forward, his eyes reflecting heartache as he looked at Ruan Bao’er’s now pale face. “Bao’er is innocent. You’ve loved her dearly for so many years. Can it be that your true feelings for her were merely sustained by her bloodline?”

“An illegitimate spawn doesn’t even deserve to live! What right does she possess to receive my affection?!”

*Illegitimate spawn…*

Noticing the profound pain in Ruan Bao’er’s eyes, Ruan Qinghe spoke with rising anger, “If you hadn't made that mistake years ago, none of these troubles would have followed! You are the original sin!”
