“Mom, are you saying Celeste still doesn’t know she’s pregnant?” Dianna asked.
Mrs. White nodded. “Yes, from the looks of it Celeste probably doesn’t know she’s pregnant. She keeps saying she just has indigestion.”
Dianna’s lips hooked up. “Then this is easy. We’ll tell her about the pregnancy, and then wait for our chance to act.”
Mrs. White laughed along. “Dianna, you’ve gotten smarter this time.”
…
Celeste played outside with Danielle for quite a while. She felt drained, so she sat down to rest for a bit.
She had no idea what was wrong with her these past few days. Not only was her appetite bad and her digestion off, she also felt tired and sleepy all the time.
Just then someone walked over. “Sis-in-law, are you thirsty? I’ve got a bottle of soda here.”
Celeste shook her head. “No need, plain water is fine.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Celeste knit her delicate brows. She felt like throwing up again.
“Sis-in-law, are you okay? Why do I feel like you’re pregnant or something.”
Pregnant?
Celeste froze. She’d actually suspected she might be pregnant, but she and Ethan Barnes had never even slept together, so it was impossible.
“I’m not pregnant.”
“Sis-in-law, have you gone for a checkup? Even if you don’t, you should at least buy a test strip and check. The way you look, you’re totally pregnant, like one hundred percent.”
Celeste smiled and didn’t take the words to heart. After playing for a bit, she took Danielle home.
But when she passed by the health clinic, Celeste still slowly came to a stop. Danielle asked in confusion, “Mommy, what’s wrong?”
“Danielle, Mommy wants to go in and buy something. Let’s go in together.”
“Mommy, are you sick?”
“No.”
Celeste took Danielle inside. The doctor inside asked, “What do you want to buy?”
“Do you have pregnancy test strips?”
“We do.”
Celeste bought a box and went home.
As soon as she got home she went into the bathroom. She didn’t believe she could be pregnant, because it just didn’t make sense. But her reactions were way too abnormal, exactly like pregnancy.
Celeste took the test. A few minutes later, two red lines slowly appeared on the strip. She really was pregnant.
Celeste was filled with disbelief. How had she gotten pregnant?
Didn’t the doctor say she just had indigestion?
Celeste quickly went back to the bedroom. She remembered that day when she and Ethan Barnes came back from the hospital, he’d stuffed her test report into a drawer, like he was deliberately keeping it from her.
Celeste opened the drawer and found that test report. It showed a one hundred percent pregnancy result.
She really was pregnant!
Ethan had lied to her. It wasn’t indigestion at all; she was pregnant.
No wonder he’d been acting so weird lately—stopping her from doing this and that, as if he were afraid she’d get tired. Turns out he’d known everything all along.
How could she have gotten pregnant?
Celeste suddenly thought of those dreams—those dreams had felt so real. Could it be… they had actually happened, between her and Ethan?
Did he… take advantage of her while she was asleep?
So there was nothing wrong with his body?
Celeste’s mind was a complete mess now. She felt like she’d uncovered some earth‑shattering secret. He’d been lying to her this whole time!
She placed her hand on her flat lower abdomen. Was there really another little life in there? She wasn’t ready at all to be a mother again. She hadn’t even figured out what she and Ethan were going to do next.
How could she possibly have a child with him?
