"Excuse me, how’s the situation with the earthquake in the deep mountains? Has the rescue team gone in? Are there any casualties?" Celeste Linden asked the captain of the rescue team.
"So far two groups have already gone in. We’ve rescued dozens of people, and unfortunately four have died."
What?
Four are already dead?
In a disaster like this, the most heartbreaking thing is hearing about casualties. Celeste’s face went pale; what she feared most was that Ethan Barnes might be among them.
"Where are the bodies of the ones who died? Can I go and have a look?"
"You can."
The rescue team captain led Celeste over. She looked through them one by one; Ethan wasn’t there.
The tension in her heart slowly eased, but listening to the families sobbing in grief, her heart was still unbearably heavy.
By then the third rescue team was already geared up and ready to go. Celeste packed her things and joined them, entering the deep mountains together.
Celeste stayed in the mountains for a full two days, taking part in the rescue with everyone. She never received any news of Ethan Barnes, nor did she find him.
"Lynch, eat something. I’ve noticed you haven’t eaten at all these past two days. If you keep this up, you’re going to run out of strength," the rescue team captain sought Celeste out, showing concern for her.
Celeste was naturally beautiful, standing out in the crowd. On top of that, she was fighting alongside everyone in the rescue effort, which left a very good impression. Everyone liked her.
Especially the rescue team captain, who had a strong fondness for Celeste. The captain himself was still unmarried.
During a break, Celeste sat down. She shook her head with a smile. "I’m not hungry. I don’t feel like eating."
"Then at least have some water." The rescue team captain twisted off the cap and handed her a bottle of mineral water.
Celeste didn’t refuse. "Thank you."
She took a sip of water.
"Lynch, do you have any family or friends out here? Are you here to look for them?"
Celeste nodded. "Yeah. My husband disappeared here."
What?
The rescue team captain froze. "Lynch, you’re already married?"
Celeste didn’t look like a married woman at all; at a glance she was just a young girl.
"Yes. My daughter is already three." Only when she mentioned Danielle did Celeste’s face finally light up with a smile.
The captain realized he was too late, that he’d missed out on such a good woman. "Lynch, you must really love your husband. Otherwise why would you travel all this way to search for him?"
She loves Ethan Barnes?
Celeste’s body went rigid. Impossible. She didn’t love Ethan at all; he was the devil in her life.
Someone called the captain just then, and he quickly stood up and left.
Celeste shook her head, not wanting to think anymore. She threw herself back into the work.
On the fourth day, after everyone had rested a bit, they were getting ready to leave. As Celeste followed them out, she heard someone shouting, "We’ve found someone injured or dead here! There’s a name tag on his clothes—his name is Ethan Barnes!"
"Is there any family of Ethan Barnes here? Come and claim him, quickly!"
Hearing that name, Celeste froze on the spot. Her hands and feet went cold; her whole body felt encased in ice, as if she’d lost the ability to think.
It was Ethan.
They’d found him. Was he dead?
Celeste turned around. Looking at the body covered by the white sheet, her legs felt as heavy as if they weighed a thousand pounds. She couldn’t move at all.
Only after a long time did she manage to get to his side. She crouched down, her fingertips trembling as she lifted the white sheet.
It wasn’t him.
This Ethan Barnes wasn’t that Ethan Barnes.
Celeste collapsed limply onto the ground, completely drained.
