In the center of the internal chamber rested a recliner, intended for the Queen's comfort. However, the individual occupying it now bore no resemblance to the confident Queen Jamat once knew. Queen Diane was in disarray. Her hair was messy, her attire soiled. With her head bowed, Jamat could sense that her eyes held nothing but searing rage! Diane's entire frame was so taut that Jamat realized she was on the verge of lashing out, and despite Jamat's understanding of her distress, it offered no justification for her mistreatment of their servants.
"Must you inflict such pain upon the defenseless servants who merely seek to attend to you?"
Jamat finally broke the silence after several moments, prompting Diane's head to lift slowly, revealing her contorted face. Diane directed a withering glare at Jamat before clicking her tongue and averting her gaze.
"Leave me be, Jamat. I am not in the disposition for your lectures."
A flicker of irritation sparked within Jamat, and he responded with a frown.
"You are their Queen, Diane. I acknowledge that the recent council meeting did not unfold as you had anticipated. Nevertheless, you cannot abdicate your responsibilities to your people and the world due to this setback."
"You... understand? Did you just claim to comprehend my predicament!? Enlighten me on what exactly you understand!? What grants you the audacity to assert understanding, JAMAT! YOU COMPREHEND NOTHING!"
Slam!
In the midst of her impassioned outcry, Diane sprang to her feet, her expression thunderous. Jamat recoiled in apprehension as Diane swung a fist, striking the adjacent wall with immense force! The entire stronghold reverberated from the impact, and Diane continued, her eyes fixed on Jamat!
"THOSE INDIVIDUALS STRIPPED MY RIGHT FROM ME!? THEY DEEMED ME INFERIOR! THEY HAD THE AUDACITY TO FAVOR SOME MAN FROM A BACKWATER WORLD OVER ME!? YOU UNDERSTAND NOTHING, JAMAT!"
Diane's eyes were beginning to bleed crimson due to the sheer fury surging within her! Merely recalling that meeting was enough to ignite her wrath! It wasn't solely Jason's success in winning the council's favor that irked her, but the ignominy of being bested by a mere man! Jason's power felt disturbingly unnatural, and Diane struggled to accept that he had only acquired such abilities a few months prior! It was inconceivable that he wasn't employing some nefarious magic to amplify his strength! Diane simply could not stomach this humiliation! It was unbearable!
"Your Majesty, you must rise above this! Your people depend on you now more than ever! We all perceive your anger, and it is unsettling the entire kingdom! Should you fail to control your cultivation and your temper, we risk inadvertently provoking the council! Your actions could plunge your people into another conflict!"
"And who harbors concern for the council!? You hold them in greater reverence than you do me, Jamat! Is that the truth!? You doubt my capacity to confront the council!? You believe a man is superior to me!?"
"I never uttered such sentiments, Your Majesty. I am merely attempting to offer counsel—"
"Your counsel is unneeded!"
Woosh!
Bang!
Abruptly, Diane hurled a substantial metal vase in Jamat's direction, and only his swift reflexes prevented his immediate demise! Jamat ducked, and the vase impacted the wall behind him, gouging a significant indentation! Jamat knew with unshakeable certainty that had he not reacted, his life would have ended then and there! Jamat clenched his teeth in vexation and retorted fiercely at Diane!
"If I am not permitted to offer you counsel, then what purpose does our union serve!? I am the sole individual capable of speaking frankly with you at this juncture, and if I refrain from conveying the unvarnished truth, then who shall!?"
Jamat felt his heart pound more rapidly as he observed the furious expression on his wife's countenance! Diane's entire being was coiled like a spring, poised to unleash its stored energy, and Jamat understood that a single misstep on his part would spell his end! Yet, Jamat remained undeterred! He could not permit the Queen to persist in her tyrannical conduct! Diane's magic was profoundly potent, and it was evident she channeled her emotions directly into her cultivation, meaning her inner turmoil was mirrored by many within their realm! When Diane rejoiced, so did the populace, and her sorrow elicited a similar response. Currently, however, Diane's rage was exacerbating a smoldering inferno in the hearts of the people, and Jamat foresaw that if this situation wasn't addressed immediately, someone would inevitably seek retribution on the Queen's behalf! They could ill afford to engage in a conflict with the council, a contest they were clearly destined to lose!
"You—!"
Diane's gaze sharpened further, and Jamat felt an overwhelming terror surge through him as Diane's mana suddenly enveloped him! Jamat stumbled backward several paces, Diane advancing towards him. She then seized Jamat by his collar, pulling him close before sneering directly into his face.
"Do not ever presume to speak to me in such a manner. You aspire to offer me counsel? You are nothing but a pathetic individual. What wisdom could I possibly glean from your utterly useless experiences? Never forget that you are merely one of many men deemed suitable to be my husband within this kingdom. I have had numerous husbands before you, and should you ever overstep your bounds like this again, I will simply take another husband and discard you. Understand your position, Jamat."
Diane tossed Jamat to the ground as if he were mere refuse. A look of disgust crossed her features as Jamat writhed, coughing from the painful grip she had maintained. A twinge of guilt surfaced within Diane regarding her actions, but she resolutely suppressed it and turned away. Jamat was becoming excessively presumptuous; perhaps it was time for her to select a new man to serve as her husband. After all, men were solely good for carnal pleasure, rendering the choice of spouse, or the frequency of their replacement, entirely inconsequential.
"!"
Diane was poised to utter a remark when an icy chill suddenly coursed down her spine, accompanied by a foreign power permeating the chamber! She moved swiftly to the wall behind her, grasping one of the swords mounted there before fixing a glare upon the source of the encroaching power.
"Reveal yourself!"
Diane's voice boomed, leaving Jamat bewildered as to the cause of her reaction. Being significantly weaker than Diane, he could not perceive the subtle shifts she sensed. Diane recognized that this power was not mana, yet it undeniably felt perilous. She gestured for Jamat to retreat, and he wisely scrambled away from her vicinity as Diane took a deliberate step forward, her eyes narrowing even more intently.
"I commanded you to reveal yourself!"
"There is no need for your strident shrieks, you uncouth woman. Particularly with such a resonant, unrefined voice. Women ought to exercise greater discretion with their volume, and their tones should be delicate and pleasing. The last woman who dared address me in such a fashion had her throat slit, ensuring she could no longer speak without authorization. You would be wise to bear that in mind."
A disembodied voice echoed throughout the room, and Diane watched, transfixed, as a portal abruptly materialized before her.
