Fang Cheng arrives with Wen Xin at a bustling old street, drawing attention with his luxury car. He escorts Wen Xin to her new apartment on the ninth floor of a building he's renovating. His mother, Li Biyun, is supervising the renovations and chatting with neighbors, who discuss Fang Cheng's success and potential future wife. The conversation is interrupted by a commotion from a neighbor's apartment.

The spacious apartment was a complete mess, with cement bags, light steel keels and other materials scattered all over the floor.

All the non-load-bearing walls had already been knocked down, and the three originally separate units on this floor had been fully opened up.

Standing at the entrance and looking in, the space felt shockingly open; you could almost not see the end of it at a glance.

A few workers were standing on step ladders, craning their necks as they fixed the central air-conditioning ducts at the top.

Harsh metal-cutting noises mixed with the sparks of welding; the air was thick with a burnt, scorched smell.

The project manager from the renovation company was wearing a hard hat, holding the construction plans as he checked details with the foreman.

When he turned his head and saw Fang Cheng walk in, his eyes instantly lit up. He tucked the drawings under his arm and jogged over.

"Boss, you had time today to come inspect the work, huh?"

He was cracking a joke, but his attitude was very enthusiastic.

After all, the budget Fang Cheng gave was far above market, and all payments were made fast and generously.

Running into a client who wasn’t short of money like this was basically like meeting a living Bodhisattva in the industry.

He practically wanted to watch the site every day himself, personally arranging the workflow, checking construction quality, determined to make it flawless, without a single oversight.

"Manager Wu."

Fang Cheng gave him a slight nod, took the remaining bag of premium fruit from Su Xiaoyong’s hand, and casually passed it over:

"It’s hot. Share this with everyone to cool off a bit."

"Oh wow, thank you for thinking of us, Boss!"

Manager Wu accepted the bag, flattered and delighted, thanking him repeatedly.

Then he turned around and raised his voice to shout to the workers inside:

"Everyone, pause what you’re doing for a bit! The boss is treating everyone to fruit today—come over and take a break."

The cutting machines gradually came to a stop.

The workers used the towels hanging around their necks to wipe off sweat, then climbed down the ladders one after another, grinning widely at Fang Cheng and calling out:

"Thank you, boss."

Fang Cheng waited for Manager Wu to finish handing out the fruit to the workers, then brought the conversation back:

"How’s the progress on the construction now?"

He did a quick calculation in his head. It had been about a week since work started.

Hearing this, Manager Wu quickly swallowed the fruit pulp in his mouth, straightened up, and reported:

"Boss, don’t worry, we’re working very fast. Right now, about one-third of the exterior waterproof coating of the whole building is done. In another two weeks, we should be able to dismantle about half of the scaffolding on the outer walls."

He opened the drawings under his arm and pointed at the pipeline markings as he continued:

"Next up is the inspection and renovation of the drainage pipes. That job will take about a month. The main trouble is we’ve got to go door to door to coordinate water shutoff times with the residents downstairs who haven’t moved out yet, so we can replace everything with thickened, low-noise pipes."

"As for the demolition work on your big flat, that’ll be fully wrapped up today."

"Tomorrow the electricians will come in to start laying the concealed wiring for the whole-house smart system, and at the same time route the basic piping for the fresh air system and floor heating. Once the tilers come in later to level the floors, we’ll do two coats of flexible waterproofing."

Manager Wu patted his chest, speaking with confidence:

"For the follow-up renovation and reconstruction, according to your requirements, all materials will be the highest-grade eco-friendly stuff you can find on the market. Quality is absolutely guaranteed."

Fang Cheng gave a slight nod, his gaze sweeping over the now completely transformed open space, then he reminded them a few times about construction safety.

Manager Wu nodded along in response while taking the chance to pull out the tape measure he carried. For a few minor design adjustments in the apartment, he measured on-site and asked for instructions.

The two of them discussed for a bit over the drawings and finalized the plan.

Once everything was agreed on, Manager Wu tactfully put away his tape measure and turned to go back to supervise the workers.

Fang Cheng didn’t keep them from working any longer. He led his mother over to the living room’s floor-to-ceiling window, which had not yet been enclosed.

The old glass windows and the entire wall they were set in had all been smashed out, leaving only a large concrete opening.

It looked rough, but the view was extremely wide, just right for overlooking the street scene of Old Factory Street.

"Mom."

Fang Cheng raised his hand and pointed at the car downstairs, its champagne-colored paint glinting in the sunlight:

"That Bentley down there is the car I picked up from the dealership today. I bought it specifically for you to get around in."

Li Biyun followed her son’s finger and looked down.

She froze for a moment, and when she saw the wide, heavy luxury car clearly, her eyes went round. She waved her hands again and again like she’d been shocked:

"What are you doing, kid? What nonsense is this! Buying such an expensive car for me? Your mother doesn’t even know what a steering wheel really looks like—how am I supposed to drive it?"

"Besides, I’m just going back and forth between Wanghu Town and here all day long, at most going to the market to buy some groceries. If I show up in a car like that, people will think I’ve lost my mind."

"Return it, take it back right away, don’t waste money!"

As she spoke, she was so anxious she stamped her foot right there, even wanting to drag Fang Cheng to the dealership immediately to return the car.

Fang Cheng wasn’t surprised at all by his mother’s resistance.

He turned, placing both hands on his mother’s slightly thin shoulders, his tone gentle but steady with a calming strength:

"Mom, the car’s already bought and the plates are on. There’s no such thing as returning it now. Besides, it doesn’t matter that you don’t have a driver’s license—I’ve arranged a driver for you."

He tilted his head and glanced at Su Xiaoyong, who was waiting quietly not far away:

"Xiaoyong, come over and say hello to Auntie."

As soon as he heard, Su Xiaoyong strode over, standing straight as he gave a slight bow, his voice loud and clear:

"Hello, Auntie! My name is Su Xiaoyong. From now on, your safety on the road and all the driving tasks are on me. Wherever you want to go, just say the word!"

Li Biyun was startled by this setup. She rubbed the hem of her clothes, a bit ill at ease:

"This... this is too much, how can I feel right about you specially hiring someone..."
