Xu Hao wakes up bound to a post, his True Qi depleted and his communication severed. Supervisor Wu and an old man named Chairman Qian reveal they captured him not as a spy, but mistook him for a gangster trying to blackmail them. They explain their village is part of a ritual to sacrifice him and nourish a 'master' in the well. Supervisor Wu admits he was saved by the master thirty years ago and promises Qian immortality if the ritual is successful.

Chairman Qian murmured to himself, his gaze once again cast upon the well, his withered fingers tightly grasping the solid gold lion-headed cane.

"I, Qian Dongming, have fought in the sea of commerce for most of my life, accumulating wealth that would last several lifetimes. But what of it?"

"At my age, those numbers in the bank accounts can’t buy me even one more day of life."

"Cancer cells have spread throughout my body, and those top doctors can do nothing but let me wait for death."

He suddenly turned around, spreading his arms, and looked up at the pale full moon in mid-air.

"But the master can, as the invincible general of the Yu Dynasty, commanding thousands of ghost soldiers, the King of Ghouls! Only he can break the boundary of life and death and grant us true immortality!"

Qian Dongming’s emotions became exceptionally agitated, the cane striking the bluestone slab with a crisp sound.

"It’s been thirty years, I’ve invested countless funds in these great mountains, unblocking all joints, even helping to set up shell companies outside, all to find living people with vigorous blood and keep sending them into Ancient Locust Village, accumulating enough blood food for the master’s resurrection!"

Xu Hao felt cold waves surging up within him as he listened.

He finally understood the origin of the whole affair.

Qian Dongming, this wealthy man half buried in the ground before him, is the financial backer and protector of these monsters in the real world.

And Supervisor Wu had already sacrificed his soul thirty years ago, gaining some kind of blood or strength from Jiang Chen, transforming into a high-level Ghoul with self-awareness.

The stiff-bodied village guards and villagers in this village are merely low-level puppets transformed after their blood and energy have been drained.

What nonsense about village guards with million-dollar annual salaries.

The so-called "strong and carefree" orphans recruited by the company aren’t here to work as security.

They’re high-grade meat used to feed the thing in that well.

"You call this immortality?"

Xu Hao forced out a contemptuous sneer, nodding at the corpse stitched up on the right:

"Turning into this state, neither human nor ghost, without any sense of pain, emotions all rendered meaningless, I’d rather beg under a bridge than desire such nonsense immortality!"

Qian Dongming turned his head, his murky eyes looking at Xu Hao, his gaze filled with undisguised disdain:

"Mortal! You’re just a low-level thug, with a mind full of bravado and violence, completely unable to understand the great significance of transcending the mortal coil."

"No matter how strong the human shell, it will ultimately decay and rot, while the strength bestowed by the master allows us to completely leap out of this world’s pathetic cycle of fate."

"Chairman Qian is right."

Supervisor Wu coldly took over the conversation, his voice still without emotional fluctuation:

"We, the Zombie Clan, shed the weaknesses of flesh, achieving a true leap in the level of life, and are perfect beings above humans."

"Moreover, only the lowest level of the clan lose their sanity. As long as enough merits are established, the master will naturally bestow perfect transformation."

"Just like me, besides not needing to consume human food, I’m no different from normal people. In fact, I won’t get sick, I won’t age."

He paused, took two steps forward with a lantern, and stood in front of Xu Hao.

"But you’re different. You will die, your flesh will decay and stink, bones will turn to dust. In the upcoming ritual, you better pray you can withstand the master’s Divine Soul infusion."

"Otherwise, you’re only fit to be a low-grade two-legged sheep, using your flesh to nourish the master’s depleted body."

Xu Hao looked at the lifeless face close at hand, suddenly thrusting his head forward with a "pah," spitting thick phlegm right onto Supervisor Wu’s face.

"Take me for a sheep? You can’t even see yourself for what you are. Once I break free, the first thing I’ll do is take your old bones apart like toothpicks!"

Supervisor Wu didn’t dodge.

He slowly raised his sleeve, wiped the filth from his face, his eyes indifferent, as if looking at a dead object.

A gust of cold wind mixed with the smell of blood blew past, swirling a few fallen leaves on the ground.

Qian Dongming looked up at the full moon hanging in the air, retreated half a step with his cane:

"Supervisor Wu, it’s about time. We should start the ritual, lest dreams last too long."

"Yes."

Supervisor Wu turned, hanging the paper lantern on a wooden frame next to the well railing.

Then, he faced the main gate, his voice coldly announcing loudly:

"The sacred ritual has officially begun, you may enter!"

"Squeak—"

The wooden door of the ancestral hall’s courtyard, slightly ajar, was pushed open from the outside.

A series of orderly footsteps echoed outside the door.

Dozens of figures emerged from the thick fog.

There are men and women, old and young, all wearing clothes of varying styles but extremely worn.

Their faces all bore that rigid smile, as standardized as a mask.

They held white paper lanterns, ghostly green flames flickering under the paper shade, illuminating faces devoid of color.

This group mechanically entered the courtyard, then spontaneously formed several concentric circles around the large black well.

Standing in the innermost circle were twelve men who appeared the strongest.

The ritual procedures seemed similar yet dissimilar to last night.

Supervisor Wu slowly walked to the well, pulling a roll of yellowed paper from his sleeve, unfolding it with both hands.

All around, villagers and village guards knelt simultaneously, foreheads touching the ground.
