"..."
Fang Cheng paused for a second, then patiently answered, "My name is Fang Cheng."
"Oh, Xiao Fang."
The old man patted his forehead, apologetically saying:
"Look at my memory, my surname is Sun. From now on, you can call me Master Sun like everyone else does. It’s quite lonely around this place, usually it’s just me and..."
Before he finished speaking, a flurry of hurried footsteps came from outside the door.
Next, a young man wearing a white coat and sporting straight bangs rushed in, carrying a stack of clean sheets.
Sweat trickled down his forehead, and as soon as he entered, he shouted:
"Master Sun, has the fire cupping been removed from bed 58 in building 2? Time’s almost up!"
After shouting, he turned his head and saw Fang Cheng standing nearby, his eyes suddenly lighting up.
"Hey, the newbie’s here?!"
The young man tossed the sheets onto the therapy bed, quickly came forward, and enthusiastically stretched out his hand towards Fang Cheng:
"Hello, my name is Lin Yue. You can call me Brother Yue or Xiaolin. We’ve been eagerly anticipating this backup for ages."
Seeing this, Fang Cheng also extended his hand to shake his:
"Hello, I’m Fang Cheng. Looking forward to working with you."
"No problem!"
Lin Yue grinned widely, agreeing wholeheartedly.
"Xiao Fang, why don’t you fill out a form first."
Master Sun interjected from the side, rummaging through the drawer to find an employment registration form and handed it over.
Fang Cheng nodded, reached out to take it, and walked over to his workstation to sit down.
"You’ve got quite the build, do you practice martial arts?"
Lin Yue curiously eyed Fang Cheng’s broad shoulders and the sturdy muscles visible under his short sleeves, a hint of surprise in his eyes:
"How did you end up in our quiet government office? Family arrangement?"
"Normally, someone as young and physically fit as you would be doing anything to get into frontline combat teams as an investigator."
Fang Cheng sat down to fill out the form, his tone calm:
"Frontline is too much of a hassle. I just want to find a peaceful and stable place to earn a living."
"Then you’ve come to the right place, or perhaps not entirely right."
Lin Yue pulled over a chair, straddled it, and leaned on the backrest, adopting a senior’s posture while chatting with him:
"Here, when it’s quiet, there’s nothing to do. But if there’s a big incident in the West Mountain Forbidden Area or a frontline operation goes wrong, we have to follow the emergency squad to the frontline to rescue the wounded. When it gets busy, forget about eating, there’s not even time for a bathroom break."
Fang Cheng nodded, his gaze sweeping around the room’s equipment, casually asking:
"What kind of work do our department mainly handle, usually?"
"Oh, there’s a lot."
Chen Yu counted on his fingers, like reciting a treasure:
"Massage, bone setting, cupping, acupuncture therapy, and some internal creams for injuries."
"Most of the residents in the sanatorium are injured or sick soldiers who’ve retired from the frontline and old cadres, with many hidden injuries. We’re here to soothe their muscles, improve blood circulation, and adjust their bodies."
Fang Cheng finished filling out the form, handed it to Master Sun opposite him, and turned to look at Lin Yue:
"Do severely injured patients directly from the frontline also get sent here?"
"How could that be? Severely injured patients are all being rescued in the surgical building or the headquarters hospital."
Lin Yue waved his hand, explaining:
"Most of those sent here are past the critical period and need their meridians cleared and functions restored."
"Of course, there are also some touched by special energy residues, which regular Western medicine can’t clean, and require us to use ancient methods to expel the toxins."
Fang Cheng nodded thoughtfully, his gaze sweeping across the acupoint chart and therapy beds on the wall, gaining a general understanding of the nature of work here.
"Alright, stop chattering with Xiao Fang now."
Master Gu collected the form and retrieved a key he had prepared earlier from the drawer, handing it to Lin Yue:
"There are no new patients admitted to the hospital right now, so the department is quiet. Xiaolin, you take Xiao Fang to the dormitory to put down his luggage and familiarize himself with the place. I’ll clean up a workstation for him later."
"Gotcha."
Lin Yue readily obliged and waved to Fang Cheng:
"Let’s go, buddy. I’ll take you to the dormitory. It’s just behind our building."
Fang Cheng picked up his bag from the floor and followed Lin Yue out of the office.
"Master Sun is actually quite nice. It’s just that a few years ago, his ears were injured by a stun grenade at the scene, and his hearing has declined. Plus, he’s getting older and tends to forget things. When you work here in the future, please be accommodating."
Outside, Lin Yue purposely lowered his voice and explained.
"I understand."
Fang Cheng smiled and nodded.
The near-noon sunlight poured down through the gaps in the tree leaves, creating a dappled shadow that made it hard for people to keep their eyes open.
After leaving Building No. 3, the two of them walked along the tree-lined path towards the deeper part of the yard.
"We are quite far from the city, so to make shift rotations more convenient for employees and reduce the hassle of commuting, the facility has uniformly arranged dormitories; all are single rooms."
"If you find commuting troublesome, you can stay at the unit directly; if you want to go home, you can drive yourself or take the shuttle bus back to the city."
Walking in front, Lin Yue pointed to the buildings along the way and introduced:
"Building No. 1 is the administrative building and pharmacy, No. 2 is the intensive trauma department, No. 3 is our physical therapy department and several routine clinics, the largest buildings, No. 4 and No. 5, are the Rehabilitation Center and Cultural Activity Center."
"As for our employee dormitory, it’s in front of that Building No. 6, I live in 702, and you’ll be right next door in 704."
As they talked, the two walked into a ten-story dormitory building with white ceramic tiles on the outer wall.
On the seventh floor, Lin Yue took out a key and opened the door to 704.
Fang Cheng glanced around inside.
The room wasn’t large, about twenty square meters, but it was quite tidy.
A single bed, a set of metal wardrobes, a desk and chair by the window, and it also had a separate bathroom and restroom.
"The cafeteria is behind Building No. 5 in that section of single-story buildings, where you can eat for free with your work ID."
Leaning against the door frame, Lin Yue tossed the key to Fang Cheng and continued introducing:
"Breakfast is at seven, lunch at eleven thirty, and dinner precisely at five thirty. Meal times last two hours, so try not to delay because they won’t wait."
Fang Cheng caught the key, removed the satchel from his shoulder and hung it on the back of the chair, placed his carry-on bag on the bed, and nodded:
"I’ve got it. Thanks, Brother Lin, for accompanying me this trip."
"Hey, no need to be polite. We’re all colleagues; helping each other is expected."
Lin Yue waved it off, indicating it was just a gesture.
He then seemed to recall something, pausing and pulling back his previously casual demeanor, his tone becoming somewhat solemn:
"Oh, and there’s a rule you must remember. After midnight, unless notified of a night shift emergency, don’t leave the dormitory building and wander in the yard."
"Especially that area with barbed wire on the mountain in the back. It’s the Special Search Team’s top-secret zone. The control is extremely strict, and even internal employees who cross the line will be taken down as intruders."
Fang Cheng put down the carry-on bag, turned around to Lin Yue, and nodded:
"Got it."
"Alright, then you can settle down first."
Lin Yue straightened up, patted the creases on the hem of his white coat:
"Blankets are in the wardrobe. If you lack anything, you can get it from the logistics warehouse in the afternoon. I’ll head back to the department to take a nap, see you at the cafeteria later."
With that, he waved nonchalantly and turned to leave the room, gently closing the door behind him.
As footsteps gradually faded in the corridor outside, the dormitory returned to silence.
Fang Cheng walked to the window, pushed open the two glass panes, allowing the wind to vent the room.
From this view, he could see the lush forest behind the sanatorium.
Among the layers of leaves, the towering barbed wire and black surveillance cameras loomed faintly.
His gaze traversed beyond the wire fence to the depth, several hefty gray-white fortress-style buildings built against the steep mountains.
Outside, heavily armed soldiers holding rifles were faintly visible, patrolling along a predetermined route in formation.
In the broad grounds in the distance, a military helicopter was churning up strong winds, slowly landing.
"Could that place be the defense structures or secret facilities for some core plan of the Special Search Team?"
Fang Cheng’s eyes flickered slightly as he withdrew his gaze.
Then he turned and unzipped his carry-on bag, starting an orderly interior arrangement.
He headed into the bathroom, moistened a cloth, and carefully wiped down the desk, chairs, and inside and outside the wardrobe.
Several changes of casual and uniform outfits were hung in the metal wardrobe with toiletries neatly set on the basin rack.
Lastly, he bent down and pulled out an old rolled-up bamboo mat from under the bed.
The surface of the mat was dusty, and the edges were somewhat yellowed.
Fang Cheng patted the dust from his hands, contemplating.
If the department isn’t busy in the afternoon, he could draw water to scrub the mat, then lay it out on the balcony in the hallway to air, so he could use it to sleep tonight.
After tidying up everything, it was already nearing eleven thirty in the morning.
