Ye Chen receives a late-night call from policewoman Zhou Susu, who asks to meet him at the police station the next morning. Arriving at the station, Ye Chen encounters Zhou Susu and her partner, Yang Wei, who harbors feelings for her. Zhou Susu introduces Ye Chen as her boyfriend, much to Yang Wei's shock and dismay.

"Susu, is this man really your boyfriend?" Yang Wei inquired of Zhou Susu, his expression etched with surprise.

"Yes, absolutely," Zhou Susu confirmed with a smile, proceeding to take Ye Chen’s arm as she moved closer to him.

Their embrace was undeniably intimate, a clear sign of a romantic connection to anyone observing.

"But Susu, how come I never knew you had a boyfriend, and when did this happen?" Yang Wei questioned, his voice laced with pain.

Zhou Susu and Yang Wei had arrived at the police station together; they were partners. As the saying goes, proximity often breeds affection, but this adage seemed to hold no sway with Yang Wei.

Despite his persistent pursuit and numerous confessions, Zhou Susu remained unswayed. He had clung to the hope that because Zhou Susu appeared to be unattached, he would eventually have an opportunity. He believed his prolonged efforts would surely win her over, thinking even a stone would be moved by his persistence.

However, reality unfolded differently from his expectations.

"Yang Wei, do I need to inform you about my personal life? Isn’t love a private matter that doesn’t concern you?" Zhou Susu expressed, having grown weary of his constant advances.

Had it not been for Yang Wei’s sharp capabilities among the male officers and the effective synergy of their two-person team, Zhou Susu would have long ago distanced herself from him.

Upon hearing her words, Yang Wei’s expression soured.

He had never anticipated Zhou Susu would speak to him in such a manner, especially with another man present, which left him feeling deeply embarrassed.

"Ye Chen, let’s proceed to my office for a chat," Zhou Susu said, addressing Ye Chen.

As the two departed, Yang Wei remained, his face a mask of simmering resentment.

Zhou Susu and Yang Wei had made arrangements to discuss the case upon their return to the police station. Unexpectedly, another man entered the picture.

And this man turned out to be Zhou Susu’s boyfriend, making it impossible for Yang Wei to join them in their case discussion.

"Zhou Susu, fine, you’ve pushed me too far. Don’t blame me for what happens next," Yang Wei declared through gritted teeth, his fists clenched.

Zhou Susu escorted Ye Chen to her office, and the two settled onto the sofa, sitting quite close to each other.

Suddenly, Zhou Susu seemed to recall something and rose to close the office door.

Witnessing Zhou Susu shutting the door, Ye Chen couldn’t help but feel a prickle of nervousness.

He found himself wondering what exactly this woman intended to do, especially within the confines of a police station.

Zhou Susu locked the door and turned back, observing Ye Chen tightly gripping his clothes.

"Ye Chen, what are you doing?" Zhou Susu inquired, a hint of confusion in her voice.

"Susu, I know it’s been a while since we last met, but even if you’re craving my attention, we really shouldn’t be doing anything like this here. It feels somewhat inappropriate. Shouldn’t we find a more suitable location?" Ye Chen gently advised.

He had initially assumed Zhou Susu wanted to discuss the case with him, but to his surprise, she immediately locked the door upon entering the office.

If their intention was merely to discuss the case, such an action seemed unnecessary. Moreover, being alone in a closed room could certainly lead to misunderstandings.

Zhou Susu was rendered speechless, genuinely exasperated by Ye Chen’s interpretation.

"Craving your body and wanting to engage in such activities is truly an overestimation on your part."

While these thoughts ran through her mind, she chose not to voice them aloud.

"Ye Chen, you’ve misunderstood. I admit I missed you since we haven’t seen each other in quite some time, but my intention was genuinely to discuss the case with you."

"Oh, is that so? That’s good, then. That’s a relief, I was genuinely worried," Ye Chen responded awkwardly, running a hand through his hair.

"The reason I closed the door was because I believe there are numerous suspicious elements to this case, and I didn’t want anyone else potentially overhearing our conversation," Zhou Susu quickly clarified.

"Understood, then Susu, please proceed," Ye Chen said, his demeanor shifting to one of seriousness.

Ye Chen, typically easygoing, transformed into someone entirely different when faced with critical matters.

"Ye Chen, have you heard about the recent viral news story concerning a murder case?" Zhou Susu asked.

"I saw it on my phone earlier. The victim was quite affluent, and the police are currently investigating, correct?" Ye Chen inquired.

"Precisely, our police unit is handling this investigation. It’s been a week, and we haven’t managed to uncover any substantial clues," Zhou Susu replied, her expression clouded with concern.

"How is that possible? Wasn’t there a young girl who survived the incident? Couldn’t you question her about what she witnessed?" Ye Chen suggested.

"Actually, that was my initial thought as well, and I intended to start by speaking with the little girl. However, the child is mute and completely unable to speak," Zhou Susu explained hastily.

This was precisely the crux of Zhou Susu’s predicament; the child’s inability to speak rendered any questioning futile.

"Indeed, that presents a difficult situation," Ye Chen remarked, shaking his head.

Zhou Susu also let out a sigh, her expression growing somber.

"Susu, what’s wrong?" Ye Chen inquired, noticing her distress.

"Ye Chen, I just can't help but feel so sorry for the little girl," Zhou Susu replied with a heavy heart. "She was already living with a disability, and now she's lost her parents too."

"Alright, alright, I understand you sympathize with the little girl. However, what's done is done; there's little we can do about it now," Ye Chen offered words of comfort.

"Of course, I know what you mean," Zhou Susu affirmed. "Right now, my focus is on quickly solving this case, finding the murderer, and bringing justice to the girl."

She then continued, "Ye Chen, you know, I'm quite worried about her. Ever since the incident, I've been going home to stay with her each day after work because she's too scared to sleep by herself."

No wonder Zhou Susu appeared so drained; it turned out she was not only working diligently but also dedicating her personal time to comfort the unfortunate child.

"You're doing the right thing. The murderer might realize the girl is still alive and decide to silence her," Ye Chen mused thoughtfully.

The fact that the girl had survived was undoubtedly known to the killer, and a return to the scene was highly probable.

Zhou Susu staying with the girl also served as a subtle warning to the culprit, discouraging them from acting rashly.

For the moment, with the police's watchful eye, the girl was relatively safe.

"Susu, you need to take care of yourself too. Don't exhaust yourself constantly because of work," Ye Chen expressed his genuine concern.

"You're right, but how can I possibly rest with this case still unsolved?" Zhou Susu asked, a frown creasing her brow.

She had been feeling rather weary lately, yet despite her fatigue, she had to push through and persevere.

She couldn't bear the thought of that poor girl enduring her pain and loss while the perpetrator remained uncaught.

As long as the case remained open, she knew she would find no peace, day or night.

"I truly feel you look far too haggard. From now on, you should get some proper rest; leave the case-solving to me," Ye Chen declared with a reassuring smile.
