Silas’s inquiry left the hallway in a hush.
"Am I departing?"
Lunea reacted first, bending her posture slightly so she was not towering over him. "Not in that manner, Silas. Nobody is discarding you."
Silas clutched the blanket more firmly around his shoulders.
Trafalgar observed the young boy for a span before speaking. "We are endeavoring to locate a sanctuary where your safety can be better assured."
Silas directed his gaze towards him. "In his company?"
His small eyes flickered towards Arthur.
Arthur interjected before any others could voice a response.
"Only if you are inclined to ascertain more beforehand. No one will be relocated today without your express consent."
That appeared to offer some solace, though not entirely.
Alena, who had maintained silence until this juncture, turned towards Trafalgar with a posture of restraint.
"Trafalgar, might I engage you in a private conversation?"
Trafalgar inclined his head in assent.
Cynthia cast a glance at him, the clear desire to pose a question evident, but Trafalgar’s expression halted her. Lunea grasped the same implication and gently guided Silas toward the chamber where Arthur awaited.
"Come, Silas. Let us converse with Mister Arthur for a brief period."
Silas paused at the threshold, then glanced back at Trafalgar.
"Will elder brother accompany me?"
Trafalgar’s expression softened infinitesimally.
"I shall remain here."
This reassurance was sufficient for him to follow Lunea inside.
Alena guided Trafalgar into a more diminutive office situated toward the rear of the orphanage. The room contained a sparse desk, shelves laden with aged records, and a narrow window admitting the waning afternoon light. She carefully secured the door before turning her attention back to him.
Her dark horns caught the subdued illumination as she lowered her head.
"Lord Trafalgar, I shall be candid. Your actions bear urgency, and it is evident you possess knowledge regarding Silas that eludes us. If I am to permit this undertaking to commence, I require comprehension as to its impetus."
This was an anticipated query.
Alena was not Lunea. Lunea embodied the warmth of the establishment, the daily provision, the hands that offered sustenance and mended injuries. Alena bore the burden of critical decisions. If anyone within these walls merited a share of the truth, it was she.
"Silas may have already manifested his mana," Trafalgar stated.
Alena’s brow furrowed. "That is improbable. He is an orphaned child, Lord Trafalgar. Children in his circumstances seldom awaken so early. They lack the requisite resources, tutelage, or lineage support for such an event."
"That holds true for ordinary children."
Alena became immobile.
Trafalgar’s voice dropped in volume.
"What I am about to impart is of paramount importance and must be preserved in absolute confidence. Should I ascertain that this information has breached the confines of this room, repercussions will ensue."
Alena’s countenance shifted subtly, not in defiance, but in the ingrained apprehension of one who now comprehended she was not merely conversing with a young man.
Trafalgar proceeded.
"I hold respect for your position relative to Bartholomew and Cynthia. I am aware they regard you as kin." His tone remained measured, which amplified the gravity of his words. "However, if this secret were to disseminate, I possess the capacity to ensure that nothing connected to you would remain standing."
Alena swallowed.
For a woman who had previously teased him in the courtyard without trepidation, she now appeared acutely conscious of the lineage seated opposite her.
"I comprehend," she replied softly. "You need have no concern. I shall maintain silence." Her hands joined, clasped more tightly than before. "My sole desire is to gain further insight into that boy's circumstances."
Trafalgar regarded her long enough to be satisfied.
Then, he spoke.
"Silas carries a draconic bloodline."
Alena brought both hands to her mouth.
The reaction was immediate, visceral, impossible to conceal. The name alone carried immense weight. Dragonic lineage was not a matter for orphanage logs, nor for a child gazing out windows while others engaged in play.
"A dragon..." she whispered.
"Indeed."
Alena slowly lowered her hands. "And you are certain?"
"I am."
"How?"
Trafalgar offered no explanation regarding the ring; he had no intention of divulging that secret in addition to this one.
"I possess methods for identifying bloodlines."
Alena accepted this after a brief pause. With an individual such as Trafalgar, certain revelations would remain undisclosed unless he elected to reveal them.
"Do you intend to exploit him?" she inquired.
Trafalgar’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"No."
The reply was delivered with a coolness she had not anticipated.
"My intent is not to harm the boy. Had I desired a mere instrument, I would not have brought Arthur through the main entrance and initiated a formal process before your eyes."
Alena lowered her head. "Pardon me. I felt compelled to ask."
"I understand."
His gaze drifted towards the closed door.
"Silas is connected to my past. More precisely, to my lineage. That is the extent of my disclosure for the present. Should he remain here without adequate guidance and that bloodline awakens uncontrollably, he risks harming himself or others inadvertently."
Alena’s expression tightened with distress at this juncture.
"That is why you seek his relocation."
"Yes. Euclid offers greater safety. Arthur is dependable. And from there, I can monitor the situation."Within an adjacent room, Lunea was seated opposite Arthur. Silas, meanwhile, remained on the bed, a blanket still draped over his shoulders. The child’s gaze flickered towards Arthur periodically, as if he were trying to gauge whether the man was intimidating or merely stern.Lunea had already completed her inquiries.Regarding lodging, income, stability, personnel, education, and security. These were the essential questions to ensure a child wasn’t entrusted to someone who appeared suitable only on the surface.By the end of her questioning, her expression had significantly relaxed."You are a remarkably suitable candidate, Mr. Arthur."Arthur offered a slight nod."Thank you."Lunea then turned her attention to Silas."However, the crucial opinion rests with him."Arthur also shifted his gaze to the boy.Silas clutched his blanket more tightly. "If I go with you... will my big brother be there?"Arthur made no pretense of misunderstanding."You refer to Young Master Trafalgar, I presume."Silas nodded. "Will he help me? Can I see him? Can we play again?"A subtle softening touched Arthur’s features, though it was barely perceptible."Young Master Trafalgar leads a very demanding life. There will be times when he is unavailable, and other times when his duties require him to be far away."Silas looked down, his shoulders slumping.Arthur continued, interceding before the boy’s disappointment could fully take root."However, he is the very reason for my presence here. This signifies his concern for your well-being. Should you accompany me, I guarantee you will have a proper room, adequate meals, educational instruction, and individuals dedicated to your protection. While I cannot assure his daily presence, I can promise that you will have opportunities to see him."Silas looked up once more."And play?"Arthur hesitated for a moment.Lunea subtly averted her gaze, a gentle smile hidden."I shall discuss it with him," Arthur stated. "But if you aspire to possess strength similar to his, you must also commit to training."A flicker of excitement appeared in Silas’s eyes."I can train.""I have no doubt."The boy considered this for a moment, then inquired in a softer tone, "Will I have to stop visiting here?""No," Arthur replied. "With the consent of Sister Lunea and Sister Alena, you will be permitted to visit. This place will not cease to exist in your life simply because you acquire another home."Silas absorbed this information in quiet contemplation.Meanwhile, in the office, Alena stood beside Trafalgar, her expression considerably more serious than before."If he indeed possesses dragon blood, this sanctuary is insufficient to safeguard him.""Indeed," Trafalgar concurred."And what if others discover this truth?""They will target him."Alena closed her eyes briefly.Upon reopening them, her decision was not yet fully solidified, but the process had undeniably begun."Then we must proceed with extreme caution," she declared. "With haste, but with caution."Trafalgar nodded in agreement."That is all I request."A soft knock sounded at the door, followed by its opening. Lunea stood there, Arthur behind her, Silas clutching the edge of his blanket. The boy's gaze immediately found Trafalgar."Big brother," he said, his voice tinged with hope, "if I go with Mr. Arthur... will you come see me?"Trafalgar met his gaze. For once, there was no need to complicate the answer."Yes," he affirmed. "I will."
