Leon planted the Legendary Instance Seed, transforming the settlement into a rapidly growing city. With the inhabitants now capable of organizing their own advancement, Leon turned his attention to discovering a path to a higher-ranked world. He consulted Xyra about tracing a dimensional passage backward, then left with his companions to investigate ancient Church records in Velaria concerning the mysterious arrival of the Upper Ones.

Chapter 589: A World at the Other End

Beneath the City of Light, space had never healed correctly.

The distortion was faint enough that Leon might have missed it years ago. Now he could follow the places where distance bent by fractions, where two points sat closer together than the stone between them allowed.

The trail ran beneath layers of streets, churches, vaults, and ruins built over one another by generations who had never known what lay below.

Luna cleared the oldest storeroom above the disturbance. Leon opened a controlled path through the rock beneath it, moving stone aside rather than destroying it. Seraphine and Ira guarded the passage. Vyra watched for changes in the surrounding mana, while Loriel kept one hand against the wall and listened to the life above them recede as they descended.

The Mark of the Uncounted stirred before they reached the bottom.

Thin claim threads appeared within Leon’s perception. They were ancient and dead, buried through the distortion and stretching outward toward the wider domain structure. The Mark supplied no explanation and offered no way forward. It merely let him see that the spatial damage beneath the city and the artificial domains were parts of the same construction.

That clue was enough.

They found the chamber less than four hours after leaving the archive.

It had been sealed behind a collapse that was too deliberate to be natural. The architecture beyond it predated both Churches. Most of the chamber had been destroyed. Walls were broken, inscriptions had been removed, and carved surfaces had been chiseled smooth by someone patient enough to erase them by hand.

Ira ran her fingers over one ruined panel.

"This is a lot of effort for people with nothing to hide."

"Maybe they disliked decorating," Leon said.

She glanced at him. "That was almost a joke."

"Do not spread it around."

At the center of the chamber stood no gate, altar, or surviving machine.

There was only a scar.

It hung in the air, invisible to ordinary sight but glaring within Leon’s spatial perception: a wound roughly three meters across where something immense had forced the world to connect to a place beyond itself. The passage was gone. The anchors were ruined. Nothing physical could cross it now.

But space remembered.

Leon approached alone at first. He let his perception settle over the scar one layer at a time, careful not to disturb the little that remained.

The structure told its story through absence.

The passage had originated somewhere outside Velaria. The traces embedded in it carried the pressure of foreign laws, too complete to belong to another domain or hidden region within the same world. Its design had been directional. Everything about it had been constructed to allow descent into Velaria, never ascent away from it.

And it had been anchored into the framework of the domains.

Leon went still when he understood that part.

The Lower, Middle, and Higher Domains were not natural divisions. Their ceilings, their restrictions, and the limits they placed upon every person born inside them belonged to a world-scale structure connected to this very chamber.

Someone had built those limits.

Seraphine read the answer on his face. "The domains?"

"Artificial," Leon said. "All of them. This place was one of the framework’s central points."

"Built by the Upper Ones?" Loriel asked.

"Connected to their road. That is all I can prove."

He found the abyssal damage within the same framework—a broken region that the existing crack had exploited. The structure confirmed the connection, but not the history behind it. Leon could not tell whether the Upper Ones had built the domains to protect Velaria, imprison something, control its inhabitants, harvest the world, or serve a purpose none of them had considered.

Vyra studied the stripped walls. "Whoever erased this chamber wanted the method gone, but left the restrictions standing."

"Which means either the restrictions mattered more," Seraphine said, "or whoever erased it could not remove them."

Both possibilities were unpleasant.

Leon continued deeper.

Most of the original coordinate had been destroyed along with the passage. A few fragments remained, embedded so far within the scar that ordinary spatial damage would have erased them. He held each one separately, compared their orientation, and began rebuilding the missing relationships through inference.

Hours passed.

Seraphine remained beside him without speaking. Ira stopped complaining. Loriel and Luna compared old descriptions from the archive against features in the chamber, occasionally finding a word whose religious meaning concealed a technical one. Xyra observed through Leon’s connection to the dimensional world, commenting only when he asked a direct question.

That was a function that he had learned he could use, while she couldn’t interfere in the outside world; she could see the outside through him and provide help with her knowledge.

Near dawn, Leon found what the Upper Ones had failed to remove completely.

A fragment of the original destination coordinate remained intact.

It did not point north, upward, or anywhere a map could hold. It pointed beyond the boundary of the world.

Leon followed it.

The work demanded patience rather than force. He extended his perception along the surviving fragment one thread at a time, reconstructing just enough of each missing section to continue. Again and again the trail vanished into the dark between worlds. Each time, he returned to the last stable point and approached from a different angle.

For eleven hours, there was nothing.

Then something answered.

The response was faint, no more than a pressure moving back along the thread, but Leon knew immediately what he had found.

It was not another domain. It was not a sealed pocket, a distant continent, or a hidden region of Velaria. The laws at the other end were heavier, deeper, and more complete than any his old world possessed. Even the minute trace of energy leaking across the damaged coordinate was purer than the energy his world could naturally produce.

A genuine world existed at the far end.

A higher-ranked world.

He could learn nothing else through the fragment. No name. No civilization. No indication of what had become of the Upper Ones or whether the route still ended anywhere near them.

That could wait.

Leon held the distant coordinate in his perception and allowed himself one quiet breath of satisfaction.

He had found it himself. No system window had handed him a destination. No treasure had pointed the way. He had taken contradictory history, an erased chamber, and the faintest wound in space, then followed them beyond the edge of his world.

Seraphine saw the change in him first.

"You found something."

"A connection to a different world"

Ira’s exhaustion disappeared. "A stronger one?"

"Much stronger, if its ambient laws and energy are any indication."

Loriel looked toward the invisible scar as though she might see through it by wanting hard enough. Luna did not move at all.

"Can you open it?" she asked.

Leon examined the remains of the one-way road.

"I can try."

His first attempt lasted less than three seconds.

The moment he reversed the surviving flow, the ancient structure began tearing itself apart.

Leon released it before the destination fragment broke with the rest.

The chamber returned to silence.

He still had the destination.

What he did not have was a road capable of reaching it.
