"Over there! Don’t let it get away!"
When I heard this, I immediately turned in the direction that shout came from and started swimming in that direction.
I wasn’t the only one that shot off in that direction, the others that had been spread out all came together when we heard this shout.
After all, it would be a tragedy if we were to let our prey escape.
If they escaped, then we would be returning empty handed today.
After all that hard work, it really would be a shame to just return without anything.
Not to mention that all of us would have wasted an entire day and would lose out on a day’s profits if we didn’t bring anything back.
Which was why all of us were determined to catch this prey.
"He’s so fast..."
I heard that coming from around me as I sped forward, but I didn’t slow down at all as I charged right out in front of everyone. Even when I was in front of everyone, I didn’t slow down at all as I continued charging at the prey.
Once I was in front of it, that was when I started slowing down and turned back to everyone.
Seeing that I was in position, all of them nodded before heading off in different directions.
I didn’t do anything at first as I swam in front of the prey, but then I suddenly waved my hand and created waves in the water.
The moment that those waves appeared and the prey felt it, they suddenly turned around completely and swam in the opposite direction. It was amazing to see all of them suddenly turn directions like this, but that wasn’t the important thing.
The moment that they turned around, the other fishermen that had been with me immediately went forward. They released the nets that had been tied to their waists and spread it out all around them.
With the positions that they had taken around the prey, there was nothing that they could do other than swim into those nets.
However, they also didn’t hold the nets that firmly to begin with.
As the prey started swimming into the nets, they also started loosening the formation and some of the prey was able to escape through the gaps that were created. But it wasn’t as if any of us cared about the prey that escaped.
When it was all over, there were wide smiles on everyone’s faces.
"Not a bad haul today." The leader came over with the biggest smile of them all.
After making sure that the prey was secured, all of them came over and slapped me on the back. They all praised me for the speed that I had demonstrated and how smoothly I had been able to corral the fish into the net.
I just said in a humble voice, "It wasn’t much. I’m just a bit faster than everyone else."
However, it didn’t seem like they were going to let me remain humble with the way that they slapped me on the back and continued to praise me. It was only when I finally accepted their praise that they finally stopped.
But of course, we knew that this was all because we had been able to catch some prey today.
If we had lost this, then there really wouldn’t have been anything to be happy about as we would have wasted an entire day’s work.
After they finished praising me, all of them started raising their tails towards me.
I knew what they wanted, so I didn’t waste any time in raising my tail towards them as well and giving them a high tail. This was just how merman celebrated and there was no reason for me not to go along with this since I had what they had.
"Alright, let’s stop wasting time and bring these back before they get tired."
No one wasted any time after hearing this since we all knew that the leader was right. Even if we had caught them, it was only a matter of time before they died from exhaustion from being caught in the net.
So we had to bring them back to process before that happened.
Once we arrived back in the city, we went to our usual spot and sold the fish that we caught to the vendors.
For fish of this quality, it was always sold off in auction style.
It was quite exciting watching the price go up for the fish as more and more people put in their bids. The fish that we caught this time was of higher quality than the fish that was normally brought in, so it was only natural that it turned into a bidding war.
When the bid was over and I received my pay, I declined the invitation to go out for a drink with everyone else.
"He’s a newly married man with a beautiful wife and a newborn child, what are you thinking trying to drag him out to drink?" The leader was the one that spoke up for me.
The others looked at me with understanding looks and even looked at me like they were saying, "It’s always good to be young."
So like that, everyone sent me off back home.
As I was about to leave, the leader also gave me a fish that was wrapped up and said, "Go and enjoy it with your wife. Maybe you’ll even make a second kid."
An awkward smile appeared on my face since I saw what he was referring to.
Hidden among the fish were a few abalones that he put in.
I didn’t know what to say in response to this, but he didn’t give me a chance to say anything as he waved me off.
So in the end, I could only take what was offered to me.
Swimming through the streets of the capital, I could see all the hustle and bustle of this place.
It really was a place that was deserving of being known as the jewel of the Merman Kingdom.
