My presence in the Holy Empire had become quite routine by this juncture, to the point where an impromptu welcoming committee was assembled upon my arrival.
However, judging by the expressions on their faces, my presence was far from desired. It was evident they wished for me to stay away, perhaps even guided by divine oracles urging them to do so.
Though I had a strong suspicion regarding the source of these divine messages, I needed to consult the gods directly. This matter, involving my own flesh and blood, was too critical to ignore, compelling me to press onward despite their reluctance.
Consequently, they were left with no other option but to escort me to the central cathedral.
Initially, it didn't appear I would be drawn into the divine realm. Yet, it became apparent they had no choice but to bring me in, as I showed no signs of departing until my questions were answered.
The moment I was pulled into their domain, however, I declared, "I'm not here for you."
Solista's face registered a flicker of astonishment, quickly replaced by bewilderment. She seemed unable to comprehend my purpose if it wasn't for the widely sought-after location of the fourth inheritance. My current objective, however, lay elsewhere.
"I need to see Vivrum," I stated plainly.
Vivrum's confusion deepened, though she possessed no means to obstruct me. After a short interval, she materialized. I recognized her instantly, having seen her visage in previous visions.
Upon her appearance, I posed my question directly: "What are the high elves?"
A wave of visible shock and perplexity washed over Vivrum as well. She glanced at Solista, seeking an explanation, but Solista merely mirrored her own ignorance.
Both turned back to me, their expressions conveying a desperate attempt to decipher the meaning behind my query. I met their gaze calmly, awaiting their response.
Finally, Vivrum responded with a sigh, "I need you to elaborate on your question."
"I'm sure you are already aware that my children have been born," I informed them.
Their surprised reactions upon hearing this news were quite telling. The two exchanged a look before turning away, seemingly to verify the information. It appeared they were looking down to confirm my statement.
A moment of silence passed, and then they turned back, their faces now exuding a newfound confidence. The issue that had clearly been troubling them seemed resolved, and they now understood their course of action.
"So, it was about this," Vivrum declared, adopting an air of complete knowledge as if she had foreseen it all along.
"So, you didn't even know about this?" I inquired bluntly.
An awkward silence descended before they replied, "It's much more complicated than that."
In that moment, they hardly seemed like divine beings. It felt as though we were conversing as equals.
Breaking the silence, Vivrum explained matter-of-factly, "Because it concerns you, observing these matters becomes difficult for us. Your divine energy creates a natural barrier, shielding these events from our sight. Only through intense concentration can we penetrate this natural shroud."
A peculiar expression crossed my face. If I lacked factual knowledge, I might have suspected they were merely jesting. However, I was aware that my divine energy did indeed possess a unique quality that prevented these gods from probing my mind. If it could shield my children, then it certainly wasn't a negative attribute. At the very least, it offered a form of protection should the gods plot against my offspring in the future. One could never predict what the future held, making it wise to prepare for the worst.
Following her explanation, Vivrum directly addressed the reason for the high elves' existence.
"They are the chosen ones."
"Huh?"
Despite her directness, her explanation was somewhat difficult to grasp. It was an unusual statement that would be hard for anyone to readily accept, yet the conviction in her eyes left no room for doubt.
Vivrum's firm belief in her words necessitated further clarification from my end.
"They are my followers, but they are also my creation," she elaborated.
Given the vision I'd already witnessed regarding this world's creation, pinpointing the origin of the elves wasn't a particularly challenging deduction. My prior glimpse had shown the gods forging various races, making the presence of elves an expected outcome. Yet, her subsequent statement truly caught me by surprise. "The high elves," she proclaimed, "are designated as the guardians for all other elvenkind. They are, in essence, my children, as I personally brought them into existence. Consequently, it is not within my nature to abandon them without safeguarding."
