A brilliant flash of golden light marked the sudden expansion of the barrier around the capital, scattering and annihilating the corruption energy monsters in its path. The small dragon, drawing on Arthur's power, withdrew the barrier to its original size after the exertion left both fatigued. With Dorothy secured under guard, the defenders steeled themselves against the endlessly gathering horde, wary of the forces of Destruction's hidden schemes.

As the corruption energy monsters amassed in greater numbers, the situation grew increasingly dire.

We handled as many as possible, with the barrier successfully holding them back, yet the forces of Destruction appeared to be unleashing everything they had judging by the endless waves of corruption energy monsters assaulting us.

They showed no signs of relenting until they seized their objective.

"Is it really that crucial for them to capture Dorothy? If so, why did they leave her behind initially?"

The deeper I pondered it, the more baffling the entire affair became.

In truth, their actions made utterly no sense whatsoever.

Yet with corruption energy monsters encircling us, our options were severely limited.

Joan and I managed to thin their ranks using her flame breath, while the soldiers wielded divine energy weapons in combat; it looked like we could endure for now.

Still, a ominous premonition gnawed at me alone.

For nothing further had emerged at all.

"If they're this frantic, why haven't the Apostles of Destruction appeared?"

The oddity lay in the complete absence of any Apostle of Destruction throughout. The corruption energy monsters acted like a leaderless horde, relentlessly slamming into the barrier.

Deploying such numbers without a strategy felt profoundly suspicious.

This convinced me that the forces of Destruction had another phase to their offensive.

My instincts proved correct when a chilling, familiar dread washed over me.

Upon sensing this dread, I instantly knew what approached.

However, unlike prior encounters, this dread felt somewhat diminished. Evidently, I'd developed some tolerance, less paralyzed than before.

Nevertheless, the entity emanating this dread remained as formidable as ever.

Originally, such terror stemmed from being utterly overwhelmed by the foe.

Its slight reduction now indicated I could somewhat withstand the fear's source, not that I'd closed the gap or could challenge them solo.

"Call for Lupus, I’ll need her help."

The instant dread hit, I issued this urgent command.

My companions were startled, unaware of the reason for my abrupt directive, yet they hurried to summon Lupus.

Post-command, the corruption energy monsters beyond the barrier behaved differently. They ceased their suicidal rushes.

Evidently, some directive had reached them, imposing greater coordination.

Attacks persisted, but most detected something and retreated from the barrier. This pause allowed frontline guards a moment to recover.

Yet the battle was far from concluded.

Their withdrawal hinted at preparations for a massive strike.

Evidence came as corruption energy monsters began fusing into colossal variants.

Shifting from chaotic assaults to this consolidation suggested a commanding intelligence now directed the corruption energy monster swarm.

"This is the true onslaught! Everyone, brace for the decisive battle!" I shouted as the massive corruption energy monsters took shape.

City wall defenders appeared tense, but inevitability left us powerless to prevent their advance.

Surprisingly, one of ours struck first.

Though unforeseen, the move proved highly potent.

In a flash, before reactions could form, a mighty slash erupted from the walls, slicing through the sky to strike a large corruption energy monster.

The beast offered no defense against the slash's power, bisected cleanly.

As the halves crashed down, divine energy within the slash began purifying them. Few could unleash such a strike.

Gazing below, I spotted old man Lancelot as the originator.

Unsurprised by old man Lancelot's involvement, given his deep-seated vendetta against the forces of Destruction and burning desire to clash with them.

His failure to charge out amid the corruption energy monster siege already demonstrated impressive self-control.

Thus, unleashing this assault signaled his limits reached.

Still, I recognized additional motives behind his action.

Soldiers' expressions on the wall vividly illustrated the slash's impact.

With one blow, he'd dramatically boosted their spirits.

"It seems like he’s gotten much better at using those divine relics. As expected of the former number one knight."
