Solo's mind went entirely blank, leaving him shaky on his feet.
In utter shock, he whipped around, clueless about where to look or what to do next.
After a short pause, Nora questioned, “What’s your son’s name?”
The lady replied, “Oh, my son? He’s a really tall and handsome chap! His name is Marcus, and he’s a police officer. Do you guys know each other?”
Marcus?
Puzzled as she was, Nora still found the name vaguely familiar.
Solo, however, abruptly grasped the situation. He gawked at the woman before him in disbelief before stumbling back a step, his face draining to a ghostly white.
Noticing Solo's strange response, Nora turned back to the lady and asked, “Ma’am, has your son been staying here all along?”
“Yeah!” The lady beamed and whispered, “Shh, keep it down, my son is asleep. If you’re looking for my daughter-in-law, how about I give her a phone call for you?”
Nora nodded.
With that, the lady shut the door.
Nora glanced at Solo, who stammered, “Marcus... He is Brenda’s comrade who died protecting her back then, but isn’t he dead?”
Nora's eyes narrowed upon hearing Solo.
No wonder the name had struck her as familiar moments ago. She remembered Brenda’s history, in which Solo had, through a bizarre chain of events, unintentionally caused Marcus's death as he saved Brenda.
This incident was exactly why Solo and Brenda could never work out back then.
Afterward, Solo had strived endlessly for redemption, finally convincing Brenda to soften and reconsider. They were set to get engaged when Brenda suddenly pushed him away again, demanding to end it all...
Was Marcus's comeback the reason behind it?
Nora eyed the villa anew. Suddenly, the middle-aged lady's voice floated out. “Oh, you’re awake, son?”
“Yeah. Who’s outside, Mom?” A man's voice responded.
“I don’t know, just a few passers-by. They are probably your wife’s friends. By the way, when are the two of you going to have kids? I can’t wait to have grandkids!”
“Well... it’s no hurry! Aren’t we already trying our best?”
“...”
Their further words faded into inaudibility; they had probably moved to another room.
Solo paled further. For an instant, guilt and terror warred within him.
Could the dead really return?
Or had Marcus never died at all?
Marcus had exploded while shielding Brenda, his remains even buried. How could he be alive?
Nora and Justin traded glances.
Justin tapped furiously at his phone. Soon, he handed it over. In those few moments, he had breached the government servers and pulled up police records.
Marcus was listed as deceased.
Solo stayed immersed in his daze. Nora eyed him and remarked, “No point guessing here—better to confront the man himself and learn the truth.”
Uncertain about the villa's inhabitant, storming inside wasn't an option. Reaching Brenda was their only move.
Nora called Brenda, who picked up at once.
Exhaustion laced her tone. “Hi, Nora. What’s up?”
Nora demanded, “What on earth is going on with Marcus?”
Brenda went silent.
Nora stared at the villa. “We’re outside the villa right now. If you don’t explain what’s going on, I can’t promise you that Solo won’t force his way in.”
Brenda panicked instantly. “Don’t! I... I’ll come back right away... no, wait, let’s meet at the café at the entrance of the neighborhood instead.”
“Okay.”
After the call ended, Nora and Justin escorted the downcast Solo to the café.
Upon entering, they spotted Brenda speeding toward them in her car. She rushed inside straight after parking.
Solo had sprung from his seat, staring at her in disbelief. “What on earth is going on, Brenny? Is Marcus still alive?!”
