Li Yunjing arrives at the City of Glory and reunites with Liu Ruyan, who expresses her worry and sadness over his upcoming wedding. He reassures her of his feelings and promises to give her a proper status after his wedding, also providing her with resources to aid her cultivation. Liu Ruyan then informs him of a mysterious force searching for something near an abandoned mine, prompting Li Yunjing to investigate.

This time, though, there was one more person at his side.

Liu Ruyan flat-out refused to let Li Yunjing go alone, and stuck tightly by his side.

Li Yunjing thought to himself, with his skills, the world might be vast, but where could he not go?

Since he had the ability to protect Liu Ruyan, he might as well bring her along to have a look.

Only then did the two of them arrive together outside the mine in West City. At this moment, it was deathly silent here, with only gusts of gloomy wind blowing past, sweeping up the dead leaves on the ground.

This mine had existed for an incredibly long time.

It was a resource point of the Shenxiao Dao Sect.

But no matter how many resources there were, they would be exhausted sooner or later. Many years ago, this place had already been abandoned.

Even the mining facilities had fallen into disrepair and turned into ruins.

Li Yunjing wrapped an arm around Liu Ruyan’s waist as his Divine Sense spread like a spiderweb deep into the mine, but when it reached thirty zhang inside the cave, it was bounced back by a chilling aura.

"Something’s wrong. Someone’s set up a Stealth barrier in this mine."

He gathered a strand of Sword Qi at his fingertip, turning it into an arrow that shot toward the Void. The originally empty cave mouth suddenly rippled, revealing twisted dark-purple Array Patterns.

"This Array reeks of evil intent—looks like a Demon Dao method."

Liu Ruyan tightened her grip on the Soft Sword at her waist. With a slight shake of her jade-like wrist, the blade shone with a faint cyan light.

Before she could finish speaking, the sound of chains dragging suddenly came from inside the mine—"crash—crash—"

A wailing, sobbing sound echoed through the silence, startling a cluster of bats roosting atop the mine. A dense black flock burst out, swooping toward the two of them.

Li Yunjing flicked his finger, lightning bursting from his fingertip. A few streaks of electric light slashed across the sky; the bats were burned to ash before they could even get close.

"Go!"

He drew Liu Ruyan close; their figures blurred as they passed through the barrier and leaped into the mine.

With great skill comes great courage: Li Yunjing hadn’t made any preparations at all; he simply tore open the barrier and went straight in.

The cave was filled with a pungent stench of rot. Broken pickaxes and rusted chains were scattered across the ground. The Luminous Beads inlaid in the walls had long since lost their glow; only a few ghostly green Ghost Fires flickered in the distance.

"Watch your step."

Li Yunjing suddenly grabbed Liu Ruyan’s wrist as a cold gleam brushed past her toes, carving a half-foot-deep gouge in the ground.

A shrill cackle echoed from the darkness as seven or eight figures in black robes slowly emerged. They wore ferocious bronze masks on their faces and held bizarre Curved Sabers in their hands, black mist coiling around the blades.

"Trash from the Shenxiao Dao Sect dare to meddle in our business?"

The leading black-robed man’s voice was hoarse like a broken gong. With a sweep of his Curved Saber, dozens of black energy blades fanned out and shot toward them.

"Which Demon Dao sect are you from?"

Li Yunjing’s fingers flicked rapidly, drawing on Heaven and Earth Spiritual Qi and turning it into resplendent streams of starlight that swept forward. The energy blades collided with the sword light, erupting in deafening booms as loose stones rained down inside the mine.

The seven or eight black-robed Cultivators—aside from the leader—were all torn to pieces.

"What on earth are you?!"

The black-robed man was shocked pale and hastily retreated.

At the same time, a violent tremor shook the depths of the mine as countless black shadows burst up from the ground. They turned out to be a dense army of skeletons, hollow eye sockets flickering with eerie blue flames.

"Petty tricks!"

Li Yunjing shielded Liu Ruyan behind him, looking at these undead creatures with disdain. His palm swept continuously as the Palm Thunder flared blindingly bright. Amid rolling thunderclaps, it lit up the depths of the mine, revealing the tide-like surge of skeletons.

The skeletons moved in strange, jerky ways, each step leaving black corrosive traces on the ground. The blue flames in their eye sockets danced, as if driven by some will.

Under the Palm Thunder, they fell in swathes, turning into piles of shattered bone.

"These skeletons are being controlled by Demon Cultivators using an Evil Technique."

Liu Ruyan raised her sword warily, the cyan glow of her Soft Sword sketching icy arcs through the darkness. "Their resentment is incredibly heavy. They must have suffered inhuman torment while alive."

Before she could finish, the skeletons in the front row had already lunged forward, swinging their rusted bone claws. Drops of black viscous liquid fell from their nails, corroding the ground with a sizzle.

Li Yunjing thrust both palms out, slamming a blast of Five Elements Divine Thunder into the skeleton horde. With a resounding boom, hundreds of skeletons were blasted into dust.

But more skeletons stepped over the remains of their comrades and continued to surge forward. The black-robed man slipped into the darkness, his shrill laughter echoing from all directions: "Dogs of the Shenxiao Dao Sect, today you’ll be buried here!"

The ceiling of the mine suddenly split into web-like cracks as foul, black mist poured down like a waterfall.

Li Yunjing’s expression grew grave as seven-colored light flared out, forming a protective shield around the two of them.

The moment the black mist touched the seven-colored radiance, it let out a harsh screech and dissolved into wisps of green smoke.

The shield formed by Five-Colored Divine Light and Yin Yang Qi was enough to block the vast majority of attacks; Li Yunjing didn’t even need to respond to it specifically.

"Stay close to me."

Li Yunjing wrapped an arm around Liu Ruyan’s supple waist, his figure flashing like lightning as he darted toward the depths of the mine.

Along the way, the skeletons were subjected to enormous twisting force from the burst of power around Li Yunjing, creaking "crack, crack" before all shattering into fragments of bone.

The deeper they went, the stranger things became. Dark-red Runes gradually surfaced on the walls; on closer inspection, they turned out to be Demon Dao sacrificial Array Maps drawn with fresh blood.

As they went deeper, the stench grew even stronger, and Li Yunjing’s expression grew ever more grim.

"What are the people of the City of Glory even doing! Have they really let their duties slide this badly?"

He cursed inwardly, "It’s only been just over twenty years, and the once impregnable military stronghold has already gone completely slack, as if they’d hung up their armor and gone to retire in South Mountain?"
