Hearing the distant clamor, one could easily surmise the unfolding events, couldn't they?
A smile, seemingly on its own accord, graced her lips.
Little junior sister was indeed correct; my youth is fading, and I shouldn't let precious time just slip away. What if she is the one chosen by destiny?
By the time Xinyan and He Jinxuan reached the Gu family residence, a considerable number of people had gathered in the courtyard. "My, my, what's all this liveliness about today?"
After her greeting, she extended her hand towards Han Chaojun, nestled in Gu Wanqing's embrace. "Junjun, did you miss your sister?"
The little one was well-nourished and plump. Perhaps due to frequently consuming ingredients from the special space, his intelligence far surpassed that of children his age.
Even though he didn't see Xinyan often, the youngster shared a strong bond with her.
With a happy flutter, he moved towards her.
Xinyan scooped the little fellow up, planting a kiss on his tiny cheek. "Sister missed you terribly."
Old Madam Gu playfully chided, "Little Junjun can hear those words, but his sister is so engrossed in her studies she barely has time to sleep, let alone miss anyone."
At her remark, a wave of laughter rippled through the room.
Clutching the child, Xinyan snuggled closer to her grandmother. "Ah, Grandma, you know I've been swamped trying to finish my medical school coursework quickly. I'm just a bit occupied for now.
Don't be cross with me. I didn't let a single one of those dumplings Grandpa sent over a few days ago go to waste; they all ended up in my belly."
She then playfully nudged Little Junjun. "Junjun, my good brother, quickly say something nice to Grandma for me. After the New Year, my schedule will be much lighter, and I'll definitely visit once a week."
Despite his young age, Little Junjun seemed to grasp his sister's request. He toddled over, wrapped his arms around Grandma's neck, and showered her face with kisses.
Then, he pointed his little finger at his sister and uttered the word 'good.'
This display brought immense delight to everyone present.
Old Madam Gu inquired, "Junjun, what did you just say?"
Seeing everyone's joyful expressions, the little one clapped his tiny hands. "Sister, good."
Gu Wanqing stood up, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "If your dad finds out, he might get quite jealous."
Just as she finished speaking, Han Jingchen's voice echoed, "Talking behind my back?"
Gu Wanqing chuckled playfully. "You tirelessly teach your son to call you 'Dad' every day, yet he barely utters a word. However, he readily called me 'Mom' early on. Thus, you haven't even secured the second spot as 'Dad'."
Observing Han Jingchen's crestfallen look, she couldn't help but erupt in laughter.
Xinyan glanced at her father's mock-resentful expression, promptly 'betrayed' her brother, extended her hand, and passed the little one into Han Jingchen's arms. With glee, she kissed her brother's tiny face once more. "Good luck on your own."
With that said, she laughed and stepped aside, creating a little space.
Old Madam Gu teased, "See? Didn't I tell you? You can't always count on your sister. Your little friendship ship has sunk rather quickly."
The little fellow watched his sister depart unceremoniously, then looked at Grandma's amused face. He seemed to understand something too, and with a laugh, hugged his Dad's neck, resting his head on his shoulder.
This gesture utterly melted Han Jingchen's heart, and he no longer dwelled on not being called 'Dad.' "Son, what is it? Missing Dad?"
However, Han Jingchen's exclamation caused everyone in the room to exchange knowing glances and chuckle playfully.
Xinyan linked arms with Han Chunxue, who was seated on the opposite sofa. "Aunt, why have you come over today?"
Han Chunxue smiled. "A former colleague happened to be back in the Capital a few days ago and brought a good amount of Zhoushan hairtail. I decided to bring some over for everyone to enjoy."
Xinyan's thoughts turned to her cousin. "Aunt, my cousin's due date is approaching, isn't it?"
Han Chunxue nodded. "Yes, it's quite near, around La Ba."
Gu Wanqing overheard and chimed in, "That's not much time left at all."
Han Chunxue laughed. "Precisely. But I've already informed Yanyan in advance, she'll be heading over to her place to assist."
Xinyan smiled. "Yes, with my senior sister present, everyone can feel more at ease."
Thinking of her second aunt-in-law, she inquired, "By the way, has my second aunt-in-law returned yet?"
Han Chunxue waved a dismissive hand. "Not yet. Her aunt mentioned that since there are only a few days left, she'll come back directly for the hundred-day celebration."
Gu Wanqing chuckled. "I hardly know what to say about my sister-in-law. She had already made arrangements to help Zhenhua during her confinement period. All those preparations were rendered unnecessary because he was so impatient to make an appearance before his mother's return to the Capital."
