Xinyan led them back to the little courtyard.
Granny Zhang, busy picking vegetables, noticed her arrival: "Why are you back so early today?"
Her words had barely landed when she spotted the group trailing behind: "Who are these?"
Xinyan grinned and explained, "They’re Jinxuan’s sister’s family."
She gestured toward them while introducing, "Here’s Jinxuan’s fourth sister, He Yanqing, and her husband, Nie Ziqiang."
He Jinxuan had verified this earlier and informed Xinyan. Now that their family had returned to Beijing, she realized they’d been officially acknowledged by the Nie Family.
He Yanqing drew her two kids closer: "This is my son, Nie Daming, and my daughter, Nie Xiaoyu."
Xinyan glanced at the children she presented: "Meet Granny Zhang."
He Yanqing was aware of Xinyan’s circumstances and had heard about Granny Zhang, who had helped support her third sister-in-law all through high school.
She approached warmly and greeted, "Granny Zhang, sorry to bother you today."
Granny Zhang beamed and ushered them inside: "No bother at all, the more people, the livelier!"
He Yanqing shared their story: "We only got settled a few days ago. Ziqiang’s off work today, so we came to visit you, but third brother wasn’t there, so we headed straight here."
Their family enjoyed lunch at Xinyan’s place before heading out.
Xinyan walked them to the bus stop nearby: "Now you know where it is. If something comes up and your third brother’s not available, just come to me."
A surge of warmth filled He Yanqing’s heart at those words: "Got it, thanks."
As she watched their family depart, Xinyan’s thoughts turned to Ye Liyan and his two children. With the research project still ongoing, their return to Beijing was bound to be postponed.
Not having seen them in ages, she truly longed for those two little ones.
She checked her watch, then hurried to the phone booth and made a call: "Hello, can you please get Ye Liyan for me?"
"Who’s calling, please?"
Xinyan nearly said "a friend," but worried about confusion, she replied: "I’m his cousin-in-law."
Upon hearing "cousin-in-law," the voice on the line grew much friendlier: "One moment, please."
Footsteps faded away, soon returning.
Ye Liyan’s voice emerged from the phone: "Hello, Xinyan?"
Xinyan let out a light laugh: "You’re pretty sharp."
Liyan responded, "I only have one cousin-in-law, so it had to be you."
Xinyan cut to the chase: "How are the two little ones holding up there?"
Mention of the kids prompted Liyan to say: "They’re running wild, making tons of new friends."
Xinyan felt no shock: "So, when do you plan to return to Beijing?"
Liyan sidestepped with a question: "Picked a wedding date yet?"
Caught off guard, Xinyan replied: "Not yet. Why bring it up?"
Liyan chuckled: "Your husband rang me a few days back, and I asked then."
He continued, "Don’t worry—if you fix a date, I’ll rush back even if it means taking time off."
Xinyan teased back: "Should I be moved by that?"
Liyan laughed heartily: "We’ve still got some time here, but not forever. The kids will surely be back in Beijing for the next school term."
With the details she sought in hand and nothing more to say, they traded a few quick words before hanging up.
Returning to school, she bumped into Jiang Peiqin and the rest right below the dorm.
Jiang Peiqin explained: "We spotted you from above, checked the time, and rushed down so you wouldn’t have to climb."
Xinyan eyed her: "Spill it—what’s behind this special welcome today?"
Surprised Xinyan saw through her so fast, Jiang Peiqin blinked and whispered close: "Wedding’s on the sixth next month—a weekend."
Xinyan’s eyes sparkled, words on her lips, but Jiang Peiqin hushed her: "Haven’t shared with anyone else."
Xinyan ribbed her: "Such great news with the date locked in—why not spread it around?"
Blushing slightly, Jiang Peiqin admitted: "Wanted summer vacation originally, but Ling Wenhao pushed for next month."
Xinyan giggled: "Ling Wenhao’s still shaken from before and eager to tie the knot quick."
Noticing Jiang Peiqin’s shy flush, Xinyan eased off: "Alright, how can I help?"
Jiang Peiqin whispered once more: "Accompany me that day, please?"
Xinyan grabbed her books from Jiang Peiqin’s arms: "Count me in—a best friend’s big day, I’ll stand by you for sure."
Mid-conversation, Gu Yingying’s voice rang out from behind: "Yingying, are you really inviting us to the dance?"
