Reborn as the Blissful Wife in the countryside Chapter 1223: Ambush
Previously on Reborn as the Blissful Wife in the countryside...
Swish, swish, swish!
Rockets loaded with pine oil continued to be launched at the bank, igniting more fires within.
"Extinguish the flames, quickly!"
Anxious shouts to combat the fires, hurried footsteps, and the sounds of water being sloshed became clear signs of the pandemonium inside the bank.
"Remember, just cause a disturbance, there's no need for a fight to the death," Meng Wu instructed, making two hand gestures. He split his subordinates into two groups, with one contingent of eight proceeding towards the corner gateway and the back entrance.
These two teams were merely a diversion. The primary objective of setting ablaze the farmer contracts fell to Meng Wu.
As the leader of these Assassins, Meng Wu was the most skilled and adept at operating solo, which he believed would be faster and more efficient than dispatching a team to incinerate the contracts.
The two teams displayed remarkable adeptness, melting into the bank unseen in the blink of an eye.
A short while later, the clamor of conflict arose. The Ouyang Family’s Shadow Guards and the Dou Family’s Shadow Guards engaged the two teams near the rear and corner gates.
"Someone has infiltrated, capture them alive!"
"Yes, sir!"
Following the clash of weapons, a keen ear could even discern the chilling sound of blades slicing through flesh.
Meng Wu remained concealed, unhurried, until...
"Fierce bandits have appeared, attacking the city to plunder Silver, everyone flee!" a disembodied shout echoed from the bank's entrance.
The townspeople, who had waited in line overnight to secure loans, were thrown into a panic. Though they initially intended to rush into the bank to assist, fear now paralyzed them.
"Remain calm, there are no fierce bandits assaulting the city; do not fall for the schemer's ploy!"
"What do you mean, no bandits? Whom are you attempting to deceive? The bank is aflame, and more rockets are inbound. With so many projectiles in the air, we would believe you if you claimed an entire army was here."
"Pay no heed to those guards; they possess armor and blades for their protection, but we are defenseless. Flee at once."
Meng Wu let out a chuckle. Chaos reigned at the front, rear, and corner gates, as well as within the bank itself. The opportune moment had arrived.
Whish!
Moving like the wind, Meng Wu swiftly penetrated the bank, making a direct line for the chamber that housed the farmer loan contracts.
This particular room, constructed with green bricks and dark tiles, remained untouched by the encroaching fire. Since other sections of the bank were engulfed in flames, many of the Protectors assigned to guard it had departed, leaving only two.
These two possessed some level of skill, but Meng Wu did not perceive them as a significant threat. He was, after all, the leader of the Assassins, his prowess honed through countless battles; he held these second-rate Protectors in low regard.
Meng Wu had initially planned to dispatch the two Protectors swiftly. However, as an Assassin, his utmost priority was his primary mission: the eradication of the contracts binding the farmers to the bank.
He chose to bypass them for the moment, stealthily positioning himself beneath the room's window. Employing a Dagger, he began to pry it open.
With a distinct crack, the window yielded. Meng Wu smirked, dislodged the window entirely, and vaulted inside. Even before his feet made contact with the floor, he sensed a deadly intent directed at him... it was an ambush!
Whoosh!
A figure wielding a long saber launched a strike directly at his face. Meng Wu twisted dramatically in mid-air, forcefully altering his trajectory to narrowly avoid the fatal blow.
Nevertheless, the assailant reacted with lightning speed, promptly drawing a second long saber. With formidable strength, the attacker severed one of Meng Wu's arms with a clean snap.
"Ah!" Even Meng Wu, known for his resilience, cried out in pain, stunned by the sheer ferocity of his opponent.
How could this be possible? Even with extraordinary strength, severing his arm in a single strike should not have been so effortless.
He wore soft armor concealed beneath his attire. While not as robust as heavy armor, it was certainly not something a blade could penetrate so easily.
Whoosh!
The attacker showed no hesitation after the initial blow, swiftly pivoting to thrust again. The blade pierced Meng Wu's shoulder blade, pinning him against the wall. The attacker then rapidly dislocated his jaw, an act designed to prevent him from ingesting poison and ending his own life.
In a moment of stunned disbelief, Meng Wu was overcome.
Drip, drip, fresh blood spilled from his severed arm onto the ground. Yet, Meng Wu did not even cast a glance at his missing limb. His gaze remained fixed on his attacker, desperately trying to identify the adversary.
However, the room, shrouded in darkness, concealed the attacker's face.
Soon after, the assailant produced a Fire Stick and ignited a candle within the room, revealing a face etched with cold severity before Meng Wu.
This person turned out to be... the Company Commander who was stationed at the bank's main gate!
When had this Company Commander managed to enter the bank? How had he known that Meng Wu would come here specifically to destroy the contracts?
To dare ambush him alone – was this a display of supreme confidence in his skills, or a profound disdain for Meng Wu, the leader of the Meng Family's Assassins?!
Meng Wu was plagued by questions, but with his jaw dislocated, speech was impossible.
Qin San Lang's voice echoed towards the door: "Inform Young Master Dou, the target has been apprehended. We have a live one, so there's no need to capture the two groups used as bait – simply eliminate them, swiftly."
Detaining Assassins alive would demand considerable effort; their swift demise was a more expedient course of action.
He then continued, "Those at the Hu Family's ancestral home firing rockets need not be taken alive. Just raze the building; Young Master Dou can easily afford the cost of the Silver."
At present, the flames at the bank were not yet severe, posing a manageable threat that could be extinguished. However, persistent rocket barrages from the Hu Family's old residence would render firefighting efforts futile.
The individuals launching rockets were evidently well-drilled operatives. Apprehending them would be a time-consuming endeavor, whereas incinerating the Hu Family's old house presented a more immediate solution.
Without the structure, from where could they launch projectiles from an elevated position?
"Understood." The two Protectors stationed at the entrance finally let out sighs of relief. Their Young Master was indeed correct; Company Commander Qin was exceptionally formidable. With him lying in ambush within the room, not even ten thousand formidable bandits could pose a threat.
But should you truly believe such an exaggeration? Did you not notice your Young Master embellishing the truth?
In reality, no single person could withstand the might of ten thousand adversaries.
Nevertheless, having secured the individual meant they could finally relax.
The pair swiftly departed in separate directions to convey the message to the Shadow Guards of the Ouyang and Dou Families.
Upon learning that their master had captured someone, You Ping rushed out with the others, swiftly apprehending the Assassins who had stormed the bank, alongside the Shadow Guards from the Ouyang and Dou Families.
Out of the sixteen individuals, nine met their end, leaving seven alive.
The jaws of these seven were dislocated to extract the hidden poison concealed within their teeth.
"Tsk tsk, the life of an Assassin is hardly straightforward, resorting to dislocating teeth to conceal poison. How do you even manage to eat? Do you remove the poison when you take a bite?" Young Master Dou observed these Assassins, a playful smirk gracing his features.
With a decisive rip, he tore at their garments, meticulously searching beneath their armpits. He discovered a wound, a freshly scabbed injury, and let out a knowing smirk: "The Meng Witch is indeed thorough, removing your Meng family brand before dispatching you. It's unfortunate for you if you believe this act leaves me without concrete evidence."
This transparent maneuver served as sufficient proof. If he were to publicize the wound that once bore the Meng family crest, the elder would likely acquiesce to protect the Dou Family's reputation.
Upon hearing his words, the Assassins were visibly stunned; Young Master Dou had, in fact, discerned that they were dispatched by the lady of the Meng family.
