"See, sister noticed! Our little Guoguo is so brave—when you fell down, you got right back up by yourself. Even when I was little, I wasn’t as brave as you!"
Ming Wei’s eyes were full of laughter as she hugged Guoguo and walked over to Kang Li: "Mom, our little Guoguo feels embarrassed because everyone was laughing at her."
Hearing that, Kang Li’s gaze was soft, the corners of her mouth smiling. She gently patted little Guoguo’s back and said, "It’s not a big deal, and anyway, everyone only laughed because you’re all so adorable."
"That’s what sister said, too."
Guoguo finally lifted her head and looked at her favorite mom, saying, "But I still feel embarrassed."
"We need to be generous and lovely young girls. Besides, nobody was laughing maliciously. Today is your great-grandfather’s birthday, and you and your fourth and fifth brothers stumbled while paying respects, which made great-grandpa and great-grandma laugh out loud. Don’t you think that’s fun?"
"Yeah, it’s fun."
Guoguo nodded her little head.
"So do you still feel embarrassed now?"
Kang Li asked with a smile.
Guoguo shook her head: "If it makes great-grandpa and great-grandma happy, I don’t mind falling a few more times!"
"Such a good girl!"
Kang Li gently pinched little Guoguo’s nose, then said, "It was mom’s fault for not thinking things through—I put you all in thick clothes today, so you couldn’t move easily. Mom owes you an apology."
"Mom didn’t do anything wrong, you don’t have to say sorry!"
Guoguo leaned over and kissed Kang Li’s face, speaking in her sweet, soft voice: "I know Mom made us dress warmly so we wouldn’t catch a cold. I never blamed you at all!"
Ming Rui and Ming Han, holding Dumpling and Tangyuan, came over too. Seeing their little siblings burying their heads on the shoulders of the older ones, Kang Li didn’t need to ask—she knew what was going on with these little guys.
"Dumpling, Tangyuan, look at Guoguo."
Hearing Kang Li’s voice, Dumpling and Tangyuan lifted their heads and looked at Guoguo, seeing that their little sister was totally unfazed and was winking mischievously at them. For a moment, both boys, little men that they were, felt embarrassed that even their sister was braver—they were still sulking over such a little thing.
Guoguo tilted her head and asked Dumpling and Tangyuan: "Fourth Brother, Fifth Brother, are you embarrassed because you stumbled while bowing to great-grandpa?"
"Nope."
Dumpling and Tangyuan kept their faces tight, answering in unison.
"Really?"
Guoguo clearly didn’t believe them.
Tangyuan frowned: "You don’t believe us?"
Dumpling didn’t say anything, but he also looked at Guoguo.
"I never said I didn’t believe you."
Knowing when not to call someone out—mom taught her that—so she decided to leave some dignity for her fourth and fifth brothers.
...
It was around three in the afternoon before things calmed down at Big Uncle Kang’s House.
All those who came to celebrate or help had left, borrowed tables and chairs were returned, and all rented banquet dishes and cutlery from the chef’s house were washed, packed, and delivered back.
Grandpa Kang and Grandma Kang were getting old and needed to rest, so the Third Kang Clan and Kang Li’s family didn’t linger much at Big Uncle Kang’s House. But Big Uncle Kang and Third Uncle Kang were called over to Kang Li’s place by Captain Kang to discuss investing in starting a clothing factory.
By the time Big Uncle Kang and Third Uncle Kang left the second house, night had already fallen.
Winter days are always shorter, with longer nights. And Aoli Village was tucked in the mountains, so it got dark earlier than outside the hills.
"Yanqing is a thoughtful kid."
Late at night before going to sleep, Cai Xiufen suddenly commented. Captain Kang was startled at first, then said, "You mean that phone call?"
"On a day like today, what else could I be talking about?"
Seriously! Wasn’t she being obvious enough?
Cai Xiufen glared at Captain Kang.
"You’re right, Yanqing really did the right thing today."
Captain Kang nodded, then said, "Li Bao must’ve told him to do it, right?"
"Maybe!"
Whether her precious daughter purposely told her son-in-law to do that, Cai Xiufen wasn’t sure, but she was certain Li Bao had mentioned Grandpa’s birthday to Yanqing before coming home.
To give a bit of context: at noon, while everyone was at Big Uncle Kang’s House celebrating Grandpa Kang’s birthday, Kang Li’s phone suddenly rang. She didn’t think much and pulled her phone from her coat pocket and answered, hearing Luo Yanqing on the other end.
When Kang Li realized Luo Yanqing was calling especially to congratulate Grandpa Kang, her heart filled with warmth. She immediately handed the phone to Grandpa Kang and explained the call was from Luo Yanqing.
Even though Grandpa Kang is old, his hearing is still pretty good. When he heard it was his grandson-in-law calling for his birthday, he couldn’t stop smiling.
Before hanging up, Grandpa Kang passed Kang Li’s phone to Grandma Kang, telling her their grandson-in-law wanted to greet her, and Grandma Kang was delighted, too.
Once the rest of Old Kang’s Home heard about it, everyone felt Luo Yanqing was really thoughtful.
Even though he’s busy at work, he still took the time to call Grandpa Kang, wish him a happy birthday, and greet Grandma Kang—shows how good a person he is.
"It’s almost New Year’s. Is there anything else we need to buy for the house?"
Captain Kang settled into his spot, reached up to pull the quilt, and casually asked Cai Xiufen.
"Why bother worrying? Eldest Kang and his brothers are all home. If anything’s needed for New Year’s, they’ll sort it out themselves."
Cai Xiufen lay down beside Captain Kang and said, "Li Bao came back with the kids for New Year’s, leaving Yanqing alone up in North City—I can’t help but feel bad for him, so lonely."
Captain Kang: "What brilliant idea do you have?"
Cai Xiufen: "I think you’re just giving me extra work. Yanqing can’t come home because of his job—what am I supposed to do about it? Really!"
"If you know that, why keep saying Yanqing is lonely up in North City?"
Captain Kang’s voice was even as ever. He said, "Li Bao’s dad and grandpa are both up in North City too. Maybe Yanqing will celebrate New Year’s Eve with them."
Hearing Captain Kang’s words, Cai Xiufen suddenly got an idea: "Maybe tomorrow I’ll mention it to Li Bao—have her call Yanqing and bring up what you said, so he doesn’t feel alone."
"Whatever you want."
Captain Kang had no objections.
Although, he felt Kang Li probably already talked to Luo Yanqing about New Year’s Eve plans.
"By the way, didn’t your daughter really shine today?"
Cai Xiufen switched topics.
After a moment without a response from Captain Kang, Cai Xiufen went on: "A lot of people from the surrounding villages came especially for Li Bao to celebrate Dad’s birthday. Even leaders from the county and the town showed up. You sure you don’t have any thoughts about that?"
Captain Kang didn’t answer, but said, "It’s not surprising that town leaders knew about Dad’s big birthday. I just can’t figure out how the county leaders found out."
