Feeling the hot breath the man exhaled right by her ear, Kang Li only felt a ticklish itch there. She couldn’t help but raise her hand and push his head away: "Ugh, you’re so annoying. I just want some peace and quiet right now."
Hmph! Man, aren’t you getting a bit cocky? Watch me put you in your place!
"Quiet? Who’s that? Why are you thinking about him? Xiao Li, are you ditching your lute for a new tune? Trying to swap the old for the new?"
Luo Yanqing knew perfectly well Kang Li was messing with him, probably eight or nine times out of ten, and he was more than happy to play along. So here he was, joining his little lady at her game.
Kang Li: "Yup, I’m fickle like that, and right now I really like being quiet!"
Luo Yanqing sounded a little sour: "So what now? I’m absolutely not going to voluntarily bow out, and don’t even think about bringing someone new in without my approval."
"If I feel like it, I don’t need your approval."
As Kang Li spoke, she suddenly sat up—and wouldn’t you know it, her lips accidentally pressed right against Luo Yanqing’s. The next second, Luo Yanqing grabbed her and pinned her under him. His gaze shimmered as he looked straight into her eyes. After a moment, he murmured, "Xiao Li, I’m not as cheeky as you, plus Mom’s told me more than once—"
Kang Li didn’t wait for him to finish and wrapped her arms around his neck, lifting her head to seal his lips.
Except Luo Yanqing quickly switched from passive to active.
...
A couple minutes later, their kiss ended. Luo Yanqing held Kang Li close, lying beside her, and asked, "So you’re planning to take the kids back to your hometown?"
Kang Li gave a hum in reply. She said, "Grandpa’s having a birthday feast back home, and I figure you probably won’t get time off for the Spring Festival. So I’m thinking after tomorrow or the day after, I’ll take the kids back and spend the holiday there."
"The project’s on a tight schedule, I really can’t take a break for the New Year."
Luo Yanqing was a bit disappointed he couldn’t go back with his little lady, couldn’t spend the Spring Festival with her. But those feelings faded as fast as they came—after all, he couldn’t let sweet little temptations and his own personal life distract him from his responsibilities. Suddenly, a thought struck him and he couldn’t help saying, "Don’t drive this time, just take a flight. It’s faster and safer. That way, I can worry much less while you’re gone."
"I was planning to fly with the kids anyway, but Grandpa’s bodyguards will drive. They already set out early this morning, and they’ll wait for us in the provincial capital."
Kang Li said, "When I was back last time, the road from the village to the county was finished—wide and smooth. So, this time going back, the section from county to provincial capital should be complete too."
When Kang Li went to Ao Li Village for summer break, the road connecting county and provincial capital was already about a third done. With enough money, national infrastructure speed means finishing the whole thing in the shortest time isn’t a problem.
"Also, both our house and Grandpa’s place were finished early, and they’re beautifully done. Last time back, we stayed in the new house and it was so comfortable. Honestly, it felt even better than living in the city.
Plus, Tuanzi, Tangyuan, and Guoguo got taken up the mountain by their older siblings. Turns out Tuanzi stumbled right onto a patch of ginseng, found five mature wild roots; Tangyuan and Guoguo each found a lingzhi mushroom as big as a rice bowl—like the ones adults use for eating. Even Xiao Yu picked up a pretty old piece of polygonum. Surprised, huh?"
"Mm."
Luo Yanqing smiled a little: "That kid from the Xi Family went too?"
"Grandpa Xi and his wife heard Grandpa and our family were going back to my hometown for the summer, so they tagged along. Said the mountains and rivers and air are good, and it’d be just right for Grandma Xi to relax and recuperate. Xiaojing and Xiao Yu wanted to go, and with Hanhan from our family lobbying, I had no objections."
"Nothing happened, right?"
"Actually, something did. Grandma Xi used the wild ginseng Tuanzi dug up and the lingzhi Tangyuan picked, and before they went back to North City, she was way more energetic and could walk independently for over ten minutes. Now, she’s almost fully recovered. Grandpa Xi was so happy he couldn’t stop grinning.
And, I had a bit of a spat in the village with Xu Chunxia, but that’s about it."
"Looking for trouble, weren’t they?"
"Yeah."
"Just stay away from that type of person."
"I didn’t go looking for her. Xu Chunxia always wants to show off in front of me. If I didn’t know her, I’d almost suspect she was in love with me—she runs right over every time she sees me, just to get my attention!"
"In love with you? What goes on in that head of yours?"
Luo Yanqing chuckled and pinched Kang Li’s perky nose.
Grabbing his slender, jade-like, beautifully jointed fingers, Kang Li said, "I don’t think anything at all. I’m just telling her—don’t fall for me, it’ll end nowhere."
