Jiang Shiheng chuckled once more.
"Fine, fine, do whatever you like, follow your heart. Daddy won’t hold you back."
Indulging Chiang Xiao was the smartest move for Lu Shuangshuang and the Lu Family; any harm to her would make him cut ties completely.
After all, wasn’t Chiang Xiao his very life, his precious gem?
Since arriving in D State, he had ached with longing for her.
Jiang Shiheng occasionally marveled at it himself.
How could he adore so deeply a child from a woman he never knew?
It was an overwhelming affection he couldn’t resist. Thoughts of Chiang Xiao always warmed his heart, brimming with immense joy.
This daughter was like his greatest fortune on earth.
"You said it yourself."
As she spoke, Chiang Xiao recalled her true background, still unspoken to Jiang Shiheng. "Dad, do you recall anything more from that time?"
After a brief hesitation, she gathered her courage. "I mean, Dad, back then, did you have feelings for anyone besides Lu Shuangshuang?"
Jiang Shiheng halted, "Why do you ask that?"
"I figure, with Dad’s fine character, plenty of rich and noble ladies must have surrounded you. There had to be someone superior to Lu Shuangshuang. So, did Dad not like anyone else?"
Her words stirred a strange feeling deep in Jiang Shiheng’s chest.
No other woman came to mind, but oddly, he couldn’t utter, "I liked no one."
It seemed like denying it would betray somebody.
Thus, he stayed quiet for now.
Sensing his pause, Chiang Xiao grew curious.
"Dad, was there really someone?"
Jiang Shiheng gave a bitter smile, "Little one, I truly don’t know. My memories are blank, so I can’t say if there was or not."
"So maybe there was?" Clutching the iron box, Chiang Xiao inquired, "Dad, you recall telling Cheng Cheng to clean up that seaside cottage, don’t you?"
Jiang Shiheng stiffened briefly, "Did Ah Cheng tell you about it?"
"Yes."
"Seems you two siblings get along well." Jiang Shiheng grinned, somewhat comforted. "I just recalled it out of nowhere and offhandedly asked him to spruce it up sometime, for precautions."
"Dad, you’d spend nights there now and then, right?"
"Truth is, I remember little else, but as a kid, Dad was pretty rebellious. Your great-grandpa demanded I return home by nine nightly, no wandering, so I got that cottage. Sometimes I’d linger on the far side till ferries stopped, claiming I was stuck while crashing there instead."
As he explained, Jiang Shiheng felt it odd himself—really, no big need.
One night meant an easy stay at a nearby guesthouse across the water, yet he bought that cottage for rare overnights—what for?
Still, nothing more surfaced in his mind.
Chiang Xiao spoke up directly.
"Dad, I had Cheng Cheng hand that cottage over to me. Any issue?"
"You want it? Then it’s yours. All Dad owns belongs to you."
