Luo Yongsheng and Guan Tiezhu were the ones who took Chen Zhu away.
They also made off with the car.
As Meng Xinian’s leave drew to a close, Chiang Xiao couldn’t shake an unsettling intuition that his name would appear on the upcoming mission roster as she watched him depart.
Her suspicions were confirmed the very next day when Li Hanzhong called to inform her directly.
"The list has been finalized, and Xinian is indeed on it. An elite team of eight has been selected; of the twelve individuals who cast votes, seven backed Xinian. I found myself unable to openly oppose the decision."
"Only eight people are being deployed?" Chiang Xiao’s expression turned grim.
"Not exactly. There’s the Alliance involved, but these eight are being dispatched on a specialized assignment that I am not at liberty to disclose."
Chiang Xiao bit her lip firmly.
The choice had already been set in stone, and protests would prove futile.
If even Li Hanzhong found his hands tied regarding the list, there was little she could possibly do.
"How long will they be gone?" she asked.
"Two months," Li Hanzhong replied with a sigh. "Two months will pass in the blink of an eye. You aren’t planning on crying, are you, Little Xiao?"
Chiang Xiao pulled herself together and forced a smile. "I’m not that fragile. But Uncle, seven votes to two out of twelve isn't a great position for you to be in."
Li Hanzhong paused, obviously surprised by her shift in focus, before letting out a dry laugh.
"Indeed, indeed. Why does it feel like you are scolding your own uncle?"
"How could I dare?" Chiang Xiao replied. "I’m just reminding you, Uncle."
"Those families have formed a coalition," Li Hanzhong remarked, seemingly changing the subject.
He knew she grasped his meaning.
And he was right; she understood perfectly.
She had mentally prepared herself for this possibility, so when the news finally arrived, she was far calmer than she expected to be.
Still, she spent the entire day locked in her study, painting.
That was until Kuang Yunxian stopped by to visit.
As she opened the door, Kuang Yunxian noticed her hands were completely stained with pigment.
"Xiao Chiang, are you painting?"
"Yes, I’ve been painting all day."
She had been so consumed by her work that she hadn't realized how much paint she had transferred onto her hands and sleeves. Chiang Xiao checked her appearance and offered a sheepish smile.
She usually didn't get herself into such a state.
"Did you come all this way by yourself, Brother Kuang?" Chiang Xiao asked, surprised to see him holding a selection of fruits.
Was he really visiting her with gifts?
"I did. May I come in?"
Chiang Xiao only then realized she had left him standing on the threshold. She immediately stepped aside, saying, "Please, do come in, Brother Kuang."
Once they entered the courtyard, Kuang Yunxian glanced toward the adjacent wall, though there was nothing particularly significant to see there.
"Is something the matter?"
Along the neighboring wall, the climbing roses she had planted were in full bloom, covering the stone in a vibrant display.
"Did you want to take a cutting to plant at your place, Brother Kuang?" She could only assume that was his intention.
He had mentioned wanting some floral trimmings to spruce up his own courtyard previously.
To her surprise, Kuang Yunxian simply shook his head.
"Xiao Chiang, I’m here to discuss a rather delicate matter with you. It’s hard to bring up, but since I trust you, I figured I would just be straightforward."
"What is it?"
"I would like to trade my next-door courtyard for your property, the former Kong Family house. Would you be open to such an arrangement?"
What?
Chiang Xiao was left truly speechless.
Hadn’t they previously stated that the property was bought by his parents and was absolutely not for sale?
