Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s Chapter 2426 - 2362: Seems to Be Injured

Previously on Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s...
Chiang Xiao conversed with Ding Haijing about Meng Xinian's delayed return from the Enclosed Camp, suspecting he might want to discuss her recent troubles. To her surprise, Meng arrived earlier than expected, carrying a bag of unwashed clothes from intense training, prompting Chiang Xiao to tease him about the sour smell clinging to him. Despite her playful offer to wash the filthy garments, Meng refused, insisting her delicate hands were not for such tasks, while Ding Haijing and the others watched the affectionate exchange in awkward silence.

Was it possible that Meng Xi had overlooked them entirely?

Naturally, the moment he got back, his gaze fixed straight on Chiang Xiao. Why bother noticing those burly guys?

Only after Ding Haijing cleared his throat a couple of times did Meng Xi lift his head and cast a quick look their way.

"Officer Meng."

Luo Yongsheng and Guan Tiezhu called out to him at the same time, while Ding Haijing stared sharply, "Officer Meng, up for a spar?"

"No thanks, you're no match for me." Meng Xi responded coolly, without holding back.

He'd known for ages that Ding Haijing had sparred with Wei Yixi yet never come out on top.

These days, on solid ground, not even Wei Yixi could hold his own against him, much less Ding Haijing.

"How can you tell without giving it a shot?"

"It's clear just looking at you."

Meng Xi answered, "Hold off, I'll grab a quick shower and switch outfits first, then we chat. Little, step in and pick out some clothes for me."

With sincere intent, he tugged Chiang Xiao indoors, closed the door behind him casually, and right away drew near to her.

Even if she mentioned it, Chiang Xiao wrapped her arms around his waist anyway.

That said, Meng Xi fretted that the odor from his garments might actually annoy her.

Once he let go, his gaze brightened as he remarked, "Have you gotten taller?"

Chiang Xiao paused for a second, then glanced up at him; sure enough, she realized she no longer needed to crane her neck quite as far to catch his eyes.

"I didn't realize it before, but perhaps I've reached this stature lately."

She could stop growing at this point.

"Not for sure; you could keep going up to age twenty." Meng Xi extended a hand to mess up her hair, "Got something pressing to share? If nothing major, hold on till I'm cleaned up and we discuss it."

"Nothing like that."

"I sure do." Meng Xi stared deeply into her eyes, "I missed you."

Chiang Xiao: "...."

Wasn't that overly sentimental?

Meng Xi didn't see it as sentimental in the least.

Though they'd been acquainted for more than five years, did it truly matter back when she was merely a child?

In those days, any extra thought would leave him feeling like some kind of monster.

A real bond, with honest emotions toward her.

Plus, their yearly time together remained limited. It was even scarcer before. Only recently, in the last year, had they met up more often.

Meng Xi believed he'd never get enough of Chiang Xiao.

"Off to shower now."

Meng Xi gave a soft laugh, spotting the faint red on her face.

Look, cheesy or not, whenever he sincerely told her he missed her, she always flushed a little.

Chiang Xiao grabbed a fresh outfit for him, saw him head into the bath, slapped her cheeks lightly, and returned to the sitting area.

Ding Haijing eyed her.

"I never imagined Officer Meng acting so affectionate toward his fiancée. Word is he's pretty aloof, almost zombie-like most times."

Chiang Xiao: "..."

From the start of knowing Meng Xi, she'd never viewed him as having a zombie expression; he came off more as a domineering sort.

Evidently, the former Meng Xi had misled everyone else.

"Still, Officer Meng appears injured somehow."

Guan Tiezhu blurted out abruptly.

Chiang Xiao jumped in surprise—injured?

How had that escaped her notice?

"You probably missed it, right when you leaped into his embrace..." Guan Tiezhu seemed a touch shy saying it, yet pressed on, "You likely pressed against his torso; I caught him wince just a bit."

Right then, with Chiang Xiao tucked snugly in his hold, she couldn't see his expression, so of course, it went unnoticed by her.
