Not long after Jiang Ning and his companions had walked a few paces, the sound of an engine suddenly reverberated from behind them.
A black Audi screeched to a halt before Uncle Tang’s residence. As the car door swung open, a young woman emerged first, followed by a middle-aged man adorned with a beard. He was clad in a yellow Taoist robe and held a horsetail whisk, projecting an aura of profound tranquility.
“Oh, oh, Master Meng, you have arrived!” Uncle Tang exclaimed, clutching his aged waist as he offered a respectful greeting.
Master Meng carried himself with a distinguished air. He slightly raised his eyelids and inquired, “You must be the elderly gentleman afflicted with illness, correct?”
Grandpa Shennong nodded swiftly, ushering him into the house.
Mr. Qian, who was by the doorway munching on sunflower seeds, introduced, “That is Master Meng, quite renowned in this vicinity. He’s not only adept at fortune-telling but also capable of healing ailments.”
Chen Siyu expressed her curiosity, “Indeed? Is he truly that remarkable?”
Mr. Qian's gaze was sharp as he replied, “There was an elder who went missing in the village to the south. Their family searched for days without success. Eventually, they sought out Master Meng, who simply stated, ‘South.’ The family searched in that direction and soon located their lost relative.”
Chen Siyu was astonished. “Did he pierce through the mysteries of heaven?”
Standing nearby, Butcher Zhang scoffed, “What utter nonsense! Ba Wang!”
The Black Back Wolf Dog let out a “Woof!”
Butcher Zhang extended two fingers, flicked them, and commanded, “Go!”
As he spoke, the Black Back Wolf Dog sprang forward, propelled by its hind legs, and charged towards Master Meng at full speed.
Chen Siqing was taken aback. ‘Good heavens, Jiang Ning, are your neighbors this ferocious? Setting dogs on people in broad daylight!’
A vicious canine lunged, carrying the primal aura of a beast. An ordinary individual would likely be paralyzed with terror.
Yet, Master Meng merely gave a slight flick of his robe.
Just as Ba Wang drew near, the dog’s face contorted in pain. It abruptly turned, retreated, and let out two sneezes.
Butcher Zhang was utterly bewildered. “What happened to my beloved dog?”
Master Meng's expression remained impassive. Having engaged in rural consultations for years, he was well-accustomed to such encounters.
What was there to truly fear from a mere dog?
“Oh, Master Meng, my back aches!” Uncle Tang lamented. “It’s an old affliction. The hospital has been unable to remedy it, and the pain has become so severe lately that I cannot sleep.”
Master Meng stated, “This is not a mere bone or muscle injury. It stems from your three souls being unstable, with an earthly malevolence entwined around your waist, thus causing the persistent pain!”
Uncle Tang nodded continuously. “Right, right, I’ve been so agitated and cursed lately; I must have encountered something malevolent!”
Master Meng assured him, “No trouble at all. Allow me to perform a ritual. A bowl of talisman water shall bring about your cure.”
Xue Yuantong, not occupied with pigeons at the moment, whispered, “Talisman water must be quite expensive, mustn’t it?”
Mr. Qian marveled, “Old Tang is typically so stingy, yet he’s willing to expend funds to seek treatment from the Master.”
From his understanding, a single bowl of Master Meng’s talisman water commanded a price of one hundred and eighty.”
Xue Yuantong countered, “How is Uncle Tang stingy? When he plays cards, he can casually lose several hundred at a time.”
“So, is this master genuinely that potent?” Chen Siyu inquired again, her curiosity piqued.
Mr. Qian elaborated, “To my knowledge, within several neighboring villages, elders who distrust conventional hospitals frequently procure talisman water from Master Meng, and his reputation is quite esteemed.”
“And you witnessed Ba Wang’s reaction earlier… Even I, with my traditional upbringing, find myself harboring doubts.”
Chen Siyu was thrilled. “That’s wonderful!”
She darted forward and posed, “Master, might I inquire when I shall win five million in the lottery?”
Master Meng cast a glance her way and, counting on his fingers, declared, “The day you defeat me in rock-paper-scissors is the very day you shall win five million.”
Chen Siyu rejoiced, contemplating that this seemed deceptively simple; surely, after a few dozen rounds, she would inevitably achieve a victory!
“Let’s begin!”
Master Meng calmly instructed, “You may commence first.”
Sensing his jest, Chen Siyu returned to her sister’s side, her hopes dashed.
Xue Yuantong mused, “I always imagined masters to be at least eighty years old. Master Meng appears unusually youthful.”
Mr. Qian clarified, “That young lady presented earlier is his disciple. Her master is mere white hair away from achieving the status of an Immortal Master. If he were to cease his fortune-telling pursuits now and venture forth for fifty years before returning, he would undoubtedly be recognized as an Immortal Master.”
Chen Siyu scoffed, “Nonsense! Live another fifty years, and you’d be dead; that’s how one becomes immortal!”
Mr. Qian observed the young girl. Having been an educator for many years and encountering twins before, he found himself puzzled by this particular child, who seemed simultaneously sharp and yet not entirely so.
Master Meng was engaged in a ritual within the courtyard, performing leaps and chanting.
In the end, he requested everyone to depart, leaving only himself and his disciple in the yard.
Uncle Tang and Mrs. Tang were compelled to wait outside the premises.
Chen Siyu harbored a desire to observe and learn the intricacies of their ritual performance, yet was regrettably denied entry into the yard.
Xue Yuantong, struck by a brilliant notion, exclaimed, "Follow me!"
She quietly returned home, procured a tablet, leaving Chen Siyu in a state of bewilderment.
Xue Yuantong offered an explanation: "I recently installed cameras for Uncle Tang. I can now connect through this tablet."
With a few taps on the software, she launched the application, and the scene of the modest yard was revealed on the screen.
A female disciple stood guard by the door, intoning scriptures.
Meanwhile, Master Meng extracted capsules from a blister pack, placed them into a bowl of water, and stirred.
Chen Siyu watched, utterly astonished.
Once the medicine was incorporated, the ritual reached its conclusion.
The disciple then permitted Uncle Tang to enter, and Master Meng, lifting the bowl, commanded, "Drink!"
Concurrently, he whispered verses from the Tao Te Ching, a ritualistic act to ward off malevolent spirits.
Following this, Uncle Tang, with deep respect, presented two hundred-dollar bills. The disciple returned twenty dollars as change.
Having concluded his duties, Master Meng maintained an air of dignified transcendence as he approached the Audi.
At that precise moment, an idea sparked in his mind, causing him to turn and observe the twins. He mused that having two disciples like them to enhance his image would undoubtedly lead to even greater future success!
Master Meng, with deliberate intent to instill fear, declared, "The destinies of both of you are shrouded in uncertainty, and I foresee a dire catastrophe looming in your futures!"
Chen Siyu perceived his words as malicious and chose to disregard him entirely.
Master Meng remained unfazed, having already established a presence within the River Dam Bungalow's vicinity. He anticipated future encounters, each offering another chance to intimidate them!
