Rebirth: Slice-of-life Cultivation Chapter 1727 - 945: Connections
Previously on Rebirth: Slice-of-life Cultivation...
In a compact bedroom within a bustling urban area, two twins were nestled on their bed, engrossed in a phone conversation while clad in comfortable pajamas.
"Jiang Ning, would you be willing to take us out to play?" they inquired.
"We're terribly bored at home on the weekends!"
"Please, we'll do absolutely anything for you!"
Chen Si Yu, feeling her initial plea lacked sufficient earnestness, nudged her sister to join in: "Say something, sis!"
Chen Siqing, in contrast to her outgoing sister, promptly shook her head, deeming her sibling's eagerness perhaps a bit excessive.
Just then, a gentle knock sounded on the bedroom door.
"What is it, Mom?" asked the twins.
Down in the living room, Mrs. Chen was in the process of brushing her teeth. Despite having given birth to twin daughters, her youthful charm was still evident as she chided them, "Who exactly are you chatting with on the phone?"
"Always pleading with others to take you out."
"It's clear they have no intention of doing so."
"Are you perhaps some sort of puppy?"
Her mother's sharp words struck Chen Si Yu deeply, causing her to feel dejected. With a sigh, she resigned herself, "Then I suppose I am someone else's puppy!"
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Chen was almost beside herself with disbelief. Had she somehow raised her precious twins incorrectly?
Fueled by intense affection that had curdled into frustration, Mrs. Chen retorted furiously, "Ha, as if anyone else would want you."
Chen Si Yu absorbed another emotional blow.
She suddenly felt a profound sense of despair.
Jiang Ning didn't want her, her sister wouldn't support her, and her mother was now insulting her; what was so wrong with the world?
In the very next instant, Jiang Ning's voice emanated from the receiver: "I'll come pick you up shortly. Let's go play catching pigeons today."
"Okay!" the twins exclaimed.
"Sis, did you hear that?" Chen Si Yu asked excitedly.
Chen Si Yu vibrated with excitement, shaking her sister vigorously. Despite her naturally reserved demeanor, hearing his words brought a warmth to her heart.
...
By the river dam.
Boss Yang, who managed a rural tourism venture, was engaged in a relaxed conversation at Uncle Tang's doorstep.
"Uncle, I've recently received a total of one hundred and fifty pounds of tomatoes from you. I'll settle the payment now. Calculated at the market's highest price of 4.5 per pound, that comes to seven hundred bucks. Here you go."
Boss Yang meticulously counted the cash to finalize the invoice and then produced a pen and paper, requesting Uncle Tang to check off the items on the purchase list.
Mr. Qian, observing nearby, chimed in, "You've paid too much; the total should be 675!"
Boss Yang chuckled, "Consider it my way of rounding up generously."
Indeed, the greenhouse tomatoes from Uncle Tang were exceptionally delicious, bursting with authentic tomato flavor.
Mr. Qian was so impressed he nearly drooled, contemplating that Uncle Tang's vegetable cultivation was merely a pastime, yet a profitable one at that. Wasn't this akin to finding money?
However, Uncle Tang accepted the money with a hint of reluctance, rubbing his back as he furrowed his brow.
Recently, his vegetables had been flourishing exceptionally well, and he often shared them with his neighbors. Mr. Qian next door had even hailed him as a natural-born Shennong.
Swelled with such praise, Uncle Tang proudly thought to himself, 'I truly am Shennong!'
Consequently, he began boasting extensively, even advising relatives on matters of vegetable cultivation when they sought his counsel. "Wow!" it seemed to resonate deeply with his newfound expertise!
Uncle Tang offered a simple piece of advice, which, regrettably, led to the complete freezing of someone's half-grown greenhouse vegetables.
Uncle Tang found himself facing a barrage of accusations and curses, causing his back to ache from sheer anger!
'Am I really growing vegetables so poorly? They were clearly thriving!' Uncle Tang was left utterly bewildered.
After concluding the payment transaction, Boss Yang proceeded towards Jiang Ning's residence, which was next door.
Uncle Tang called out, "Boss Yang, could you do me a favor and ask if Jiang is available today? I need him to help me set up a camera!"
He couldn't quite believe it himself, having specifically purchased a camera to record his vegetable planting process, hoping to reignite his inner Shennong spirit!
At the neighboring house.
Jiang Ning wheeled his titanium gray electric bike to the entrance, prepared to welcome his twin guests.
Before Boss Yang could even take a few steps toward Jiang Ning, he immediately called out, "Jiang Ning, I heard from Dongdong that your slingshot skills are truly remarkable. Could you possibly lend me a hand with something?"
"Recently, a household that raised pigeons in the southern part of the village went out of business. I suspect some of the pigeons have escaped and are now frequenting my place. They come to feast on my strawberries every day, darn it all, always picking the plumpest ones, and I just can't seem to catch them!"
As he elaborated, Boss Yang's frustration grew palpable, "Or worse, they'll be fluttering right on my windowsill early in the morning, waking me up!"
Boss Yang had initially considered employing some form of pest control, perhaps even poison, but with the strawberry garden being a popular spot for families and children, he worried about potential repercussions...
Mr. Qian offered a suggestion, "Why don't you release some cats to hunt the pigeons?"
Uncle Tang rubbed his aching back, sighing, "It's not just the birds that will end up ruining the strawberries then; it'll be both the birds and the cats!"
Uncle Tang then proposed another idea, "Perhaps we could install bird nets on both sides of the greenhouse?"
Boss Yang shook his head, "There are usually customers around, and those pigeons are quite cunning. Let's have Jiang Ning give it a try instead."
Jiang Ning responded, his brow furrowed in thought, "Pigeons?"
Suddenly, a culinary idea sparked in his mind: frying them or perhaps barbecuing them.
"Alright, I'll head to the city to collect someone first, then I'll fetch the slingshot and take them all down."
His declaration was filled with an unshakeable confidence, not a shred of humility present.
Mr. Qian, glancing sideways, felt an urge to retort, but the thought of the dwindling sesame oil at home made him pause.
Witnessing Jiang Ning's composed attitude instilled a sense of reassurance in Boss Yang.
Dongdong had previously bragged about his exceptional slingshot prowess, skills lauded to the heavens, always hitting his mark.
While Dongdong was indeed a master of the slingshot, he was currently attending school, away from the river dam, and likely wouldn't return until the summer vacation.
Jiang Ning casually mounted the electric bike, opting not to inform Tongtong, and promptly departed to gather their guests.
In reality, Tongtong had already been awake since six in the morning, consumed her breakfast prepared by Chuchu, and subsequently returned to slumber, delaying her 'second revival' of the day.
Nevertheless, Tongtong generally displayed a warm hospitality, with the sole exception reserved for Tang Fu.
...
Not long after Jiang Ning's departure, Tongtong was jolted awake by the persistent ringing of a WeChat call. She stretched languidly in her bed, pursed her lips twice, and eventually answered the phone.
"Mom, what is it! I'm studying! You've interrupted me!"
"I'm currently at the cake shop, ordering your birthday cake. Would you prefer a French dessert or a fruit-based one?"
Her mother's gentle voice echoed in her ears, akin to the most beautiful celestial music!
