The elevator doors slid open, and immediately, waves of laughter filled the air. In contrast to the typical silence, the villa buzzed with energy this evening, hosting around ten youths who were chatting and enjoying themselves.
There was Zhuang Jianhui, Lin Xiaopang, Yuan Lin sporting fancy outfits and a high-end watch, Wei Zishan playfully toying with a small white snake in her fingers, along with a few more young folks radiating poise or sophistication.
Upon hearing the noise, Lin Zida looked over and called out right away, "Shuyan, finished already? Join us for Werewolf!"
Setting the fruit basket down on the table, Ding Shuyan kept her composed expression, "Alright, a few games sound good."
Wei Zishan, who had been gently stroking the little white snake with her polished nails, spotted the fruit basket and exclaimed in delight, "These cherries look great!"
She grabbed one casually, popped it into her mouth, and her face lit up in surprise, "Wow, where'd you get these from?"
...
By the riverbank, in the small house.
Xue Yuantong activated god mode during a bot match, wiping out the fleeing enemy bots left and right. Even Chen Siyu, despite her inexperience, managed to snag a few kills alongside her.
Once the match wrapped up, Chen Siyu showered Xue Yuantong with compliments, using every flattering term she could think of, calling her the top gamer with the purest soul around. She said even the most savage stray dog would blush in shame upon meeting such a benevolent soul, reform instantly, and become a loyal pup forevermore.
She went on to say that if Tongtong teamed up with other girls in games, those silly ones would vow from then on to grow their hair long in his honor, and if they couldn't wed him, they'd never cut it, linger by the glow of ancient Buddha lamps, and stay unmarried for life...
"Therefore, Tongtong, to avoid bothering anyone else, you must game only with me, got it?" Chen Siyu cautioned her.
Xue Yuantong suppressed a grin, replying smugly via text, "Eh, it's nothing special!"
Chen Siyu: "Nothing special, yet number one globally."
Xue Yuantong thought to herself, ’Si Yu's words just sound so sweet!’
Her liking increased by 100.
After more flattery, Chen Siyu turned to poking fun at herself, "Tongtong, you're incredible, but me? I'm a total noob at games."
Buoyed by the compliments, Xue Yuantong suggested, "Tell you what, Si Yu, let me coach you on how to play!"
The moment she spoke, Chuchu, lounging on the sofa with a book, glanced up, her clear eyes sweeping over Tongtong, before she resumed her reading.
Chen Siyu lit up with excitement, "For real? You mean it?"
Tongtong assured her, "Absolutely, I'll turn you into a master, and we'll rule the King’s Game together!"
Aware of her own skills, Chen Siyu replied, "Ruling isn't necessary; silver rank would make me thrilled!"
With the plan set, Tongtong tinkered around briefly. She first considered streaming her play to Chen Siyu but dropped the idea since it required being 18.
Instead, she opted for the straightforward approach: video-calling Si Yu and passing the phone to Chuchu to position it toward the screen, so Si Yu and her pals could view it on their end.
"Make do with this setup, watch closely!" Xue Yuantong declared, then launched into a new King’s Game round.
Chen Siyu watched with full attention, studying the pro-level gameplay in hopes of picking up tips to conquer Summoner’s Rift.
Xue Yuantong swiftly selected the Little Fishman, seized the trident, and dove into the jungle path.
After observing for some time, Chen Siyu’s eyes began aching from the rapid shifts, and she called out quickly, "Tongtong, is it glitching? Why's your screen jumping everywhere?"
While handling the keys and mouse, Xue Yuantong explained, "No glitches here. I'm tracking my teammates' positions. See that fool in enemy mid-lane, botching every minion? Heading to take them down now."
Saying so, she rushed forward trident-first to strike.
And indeed, with precise teamwork, she eliminated the foe.
Xue Yuantong revealed her trick, "Si Yu, catch that?"
From Chen Siyu’s view, it was just a blur of motion, dazzling her and spinning her thoughts.
Clutching her forehead, Chen Siyu felt drained, "I can't keep up; need a pause."
Chen Siqing asked feebly, "Tongtong, why flip between screens for teammates? I never bother with that."
Xue Yuantong blinked in confusion, "Well, you have to monitor allies and enemies in any game. Isn't that how you do it?"
The watching Xue Chuchu pressed her lips together, "From what I've observed, you're the sole player who operates that way."
How bold, Chuchu, challenging me like this!
Xue Yuantong teased her limited knowledge: "You've only witnessed me and Jiang Ning gaming."
Xue Chuchu: "..."
Xue Yuantong shrugged it off: "No biggie. I tackle way flashier games than this. I juggle CF and LOL simultaneously, zapping foes in Nightfall Manor and slashing in the Rift—double the thrill, haha!"
Struggling with academics, Chen Siyu felt utterly deflated: "Is there a single thing I'm decent at in this life?"
To cheer up the disheartened twins with their words, Tongtong tore through the Rift, clinched the victory, when suddenly a sound came from outside.
Xue Yuantong leaped from her seat, her small face beaming: "He's here—Jiang Ning's returned!"
Still connected via video, Chen Siyu inquired curiously: "Jiang Ning came back post-New Year?"
As they chatted, Xue Chuchu swung the door open, revealing Jiang Ning’s form.
He surveyed the space, saw Tongtong video-calling the twins, and remarked happily: "Looks pretty animated in here."
The twins called out enthusiastically: "Jiang Ning, it's been ages!"
Jiang Ning laughed: "Yeah, quite some time."
Lifting the barbecue in one hand and the fruit basket in the other, he offered: "Brought some treats—dig in."
Overjoyed, Chen Siyu let go of her sister and jumped around gleefully: "How awesome, time to munch away!"
Then it hit her—they were still divided by the display.
Chen Siyu’s joy turned to a standstill.
Xue Yuantong: "Haha."
Jiang Ning set the fruit basket on the little wooden table, and Tongtong angled her phone for a zoom-in.
Next, he unpacked the thermal bag, unveiling shiny, appetizing skewers, with Tongtong providing another close view.
Chen Siyu felt the pang of envy across the screen.
In that instant, her craving went unsatisfied, much like a lonely guy peeking at the neighbor’s bathing beauty in the dead of night, itching with frustration.
Tears even welled up in Chen Siyu’s eyes.
Xue Yuantong directed Chuchu to rinse the large cherries, while she grabbed a half-empty cola from the kitchen, serving a glass to everyone.
Snatching a lamb skewer, Xue Yuantong bit in; it was piping hot, the flavors of spice, cumin, and juicy meat bursting forth—pure bliss.
The chilly, empty evening warmed with the skewers, too tempting to ignore.
Tongtong lifted her glass, tapping it lightly against the phone lens, smirking playfully: "Siyu, cheers to liberty!"
On the far side, Siyu was practically salivating!
Tongtong then plucked a plump cherry, displayed it to Siyu, and devoured it whole.
"Cherries are amazing! Any other fruit so yummy and hassle-free?" she marveled, full of feeling.
Munching a large cherry, Xue Chuchu relished the tangy-sweet pulp and commented: "Plenty others—sugar oranges work well, simple to strip and sugary."
Jiang Ning: "Sure, they're peelable, but post-orange, your fingers get sticky, requiring a rinse, and overdoing it leaves you yellow like a Minion."
Xue Chuchu saw the logic, pondering before saying, "What of bananas? Effortless to unwrap, no hand-washing needed, seed-free too."
Jiang Ning mulled it over—seemed spot on.
While they debated, the remote twins nearly sobbed from starvation, missing out on the midnight feast.
Catching their banana talk, Chen Siyu’s voice burst from the speaker in complaint: "You're skipping the downsides! Bananas demand a mouth rinse afterward!"
Xue Chuchu furrowed her brow, baffled no matter how she considered it: ’Why rinse after bananas? That's pineapples—you gotta freshen up after those, not bananas.’
Jiang Ning halted briefly: "Siyu, you alright?"
