Rebirth of a Village Girl Chapter 3 - 3 002: Divorce!_1
Previously on Rebirth of a Village Girl...
The man and the woman were positioned extremely close, their faces clearly visible to one another.
With a sudden movement, the man gripped her waist tightly and flipped their bodies, reversing their positions.
Now, the man lay beneath her while she was perched on top.
His hand remained unchanged, however, still firmly grasping her slender waist.
The girl possessed remarkably fair skin and flawless peach blossom eyes that were crystal clear. Her long lashes fluttered like delicate fans, capable of capturing anyone's soul with just a passing look.
Even though a vivid handprint marked her left cheek, it didn't ruin her appearance; rather, it lent her a certain unique charm.
Luckily, Ni Yang had chosen a green dress for the day, allowing her to blend into the thick grass. The emerald hue served as perfect camouflage, leaving no sign of them to be found.
Thud thud thud!
Rhythmic footsteps echoed from the slope as boots crunched against the grassy field.
It was obvious without thinking that the individuals above were hunting for the man.
In such a tense situation, if she were discovered hiding with a man, she wouldn't be able to clear her name even if she jumped into the Yellow River.
Ni Yang's face turned a ghostly pale shade as she bit her lip, her pulse racing with anxiety.
What should she do now?
Just then, a booming voice shouted from the slope, "He vanished right around this spot, search every inch!"
The sound of footsteps scattered immediately.
"Nothing over here!"
"Empty here as well!"
One person frowned slightly and questioned, "Have you checked the area down below?"
"No!"
"Then get down there and take a look!"
"Understood!"
They were heading down!
What was she supposed to do?
Ni Yang was nearly frantic with worry.
Chirp!
Hiss hiss—
Suddenly, the sound of wings flapping filled the air, accompanied by the sharp hissing of a snake.
"There's a snake down there!"
"A snake might bite us!"
The footsteps that had been approaching came to a sudden halt.
Hiss!
Chirp-chirp— the bird’s cries grew faint.
The snake's hissing grew more aggressive and loud!
Judging by the noise, the snake sounded quite large; a bite from such a creature could surely be fatal.
The man who had intended to descend immediately backed away and headed back up, shouting, "There's nobody down there!"
"Let's search over that way instead!"
Swish-swish! The rhythmic footsteps gradually faded into the distance.
Even so, Ni Yang held her breath, terrified they might return, as she listened intently to the sounds above.
The man lying beneath her narrowed his eyes slightly, silently observing the scene.
The person responsible for those animal noises was none other than this village girl.
He found it hard to believe that a simple girl from the countryside possessed such incredible mimicry talents.
Usually, such skills required decades of practice under a master's tutelage to perfect.
Yet the girl before him appeared to be no older than sixteen or seventeen.
Even if a real snake and bird had been there, one wouldn't have known the difference!
She was that realistic!
Truly remarkable!
Ni Yang didn't have the energy to care about his reaction. She only climbed off him once the men above had completely departed.
She sat on the ground, gasping for air.
She was highly intelligent.
Smart, and remarkably composed at the same time.
How could he describe her?
She didn't act like a typical teenage village girl at all.
Her looks were also extraordinary.
Could a common village girl really have such beauty and such quick wits?
The man rose from the ground, his eyes squinting. "What is your name?"
"Yangyang," Ni Yang replied, lying about her identity.
She wasn't naive; she could see this man had a dangerous aura and wasn't someone to be messed with. She had no intention of giving him her true name.
Besides, Yingying and Yangyang sounded similar enough.
"What is your family name?" the man pressed further.
"Mu," Ni Yang answered.
Since her surname was now Mu, she wasn't technically lying this time.
"Where did you learn to imitate voices like that?" The man's stare was fixed on her like a predatory beast, feeling somewhat suffocating.
Ni Yang explained, "This is the countryside; we are surrounded by all kinds of animals. I just picked it up while growing up."
Ni Yang had always been clever with a sharp memory.
The man narrowed his eyes as if weighing her honesty. Then, he pulled a wallet from his pocket and produced a stack of bills. "Consider this my gratitude. I am from Beijing; if you ever find yourself in trouble, you can look for me there."
"Very well." Ni Yang reached out to accept the money. She looked submissive, but a glimmer of disdain flashed in her lowered eyes.
Why would she ever go looking for a man she wanted to avoid so desperately?
As for the cash, she certainly wouldn't turn it down. She had earned it, after all.
At the very least, she had saved his life.
Without her intervention, he likely would have been captured long ago.
Furthermore, she was currently in desperate need of funds.
The man didn't stick around after handing over the money; he departed in a hurry.
Just as he was about to vanish from Ni Yang's view, he suddenly turned back to glance at her.
The young girl stood in the sunlight, graceful and lovely with skin as pale as snow, looking like a figure from a painting. Even the wealthy socialites in the city couldn't compare to her.
After one final look, the man left.
Once he was gone, Ni Yang let out a sigh of relief. Just then, a bright glint caught her attention. Looking closer, she found a watch lying in the grass.
Ni Yang snatched up the watch, tossed it into her basket, and headed home with the green fodder.
When Ni Yang arrived back at the Mu Family home, the light scent of cooking drifted through the courtyard.
Naturally, Ni Cuihua was the one busy in the kitchen.
Even though Ni Cuihua had just given birth, she hadn't been allowed a single moment of rest.
"Mom, let me take over. Go check on my little sister." Ni Yang took the spatula and expertly turned the potato pancake in the pan.
"Yangyang, I can do this." Ni Cuihua watched her daughter, suddenly realizing how much she had matured.
The old Ni Yang had been incredibly timid, terrified even by a mouse. But today, she had the courage to stand up to both Jinbao and the Mu matriarch!
After flipping the pancake, Ni Yang looked at her mother. "Mom, do you really want to keep living this way?"
Ni Cuihua was stunned. "What are you saying, Yangyang?"
Ni Yang sighed heavily. "Mom, divorce him!"
Divorce?
In this era, such a thing was practically unheard of!
Moreover, in this isolated rural village, how could a traditional woman like Ni Cuihua even dream of it? In her mind, divorced women were considered immoral and scandalous!
What decent woman would ever get a divorce?
Ni Cuihua’s tone grew cold. "What kind of nonsense are you talking about!"
Ni Yang took a deep breath. "Mom, think about it. What kind of life have you had with the Mu Family? Do Grandma and Dad even treat you like a human being? To them, you're just a breeding tool meant for the most grueling labor! Mom, really think—what is the point of staying? If this continues, it’s not just my three sisters who will be discarded; we might all end up dead!"
Ni Yang desperately hoped her mother would wake up soon.
But she didn't.
Ni Cuihua simply couldn't process those words because she was so accustomed to suffering.
She quickly covered Ni Yang’s mouth and said sharply, "Who gave you permission to badmouth your father and grandmother! You are just a child! If you ever say such things again, I'll tear your mouth apart!"
Even though Ni Cuihua knew Ni Yang was only trying to protect her and that her words were true...
The old-fashioned upbringing Ni Cuihua had received taught her that children must never criticize their elders.
Such a thing was considered heartless.
Besides, a woman was expected to follow her husband no matter what.
She couldn't fight back.
Ni Yang sighed; she understood her mother's mindset and her fears. She would just have to wait a bit longer until her mother saw the cold truth for herself. Only then would she willingly escape this soul-crushing place.
Ni Yang already had a plan forming in her mind.
Ni Cuihua gently touched Ni Yang’s swollen face and asked hoarsely, "Does it hurt? Yangyang, is your face still painful? Your grandmother hit you far too hard. Yangyang, listen to me, don't talk back to her next time. It won't be just a slap next time..."
Ni Yang looked up and offered a faint smile. "It's fine, Mom. It doesn't hurt at all."
"Is that true?" Ni Cuihua asked, doubting her.
"Yes," Ni Yang nodded quietly.
She had endured so much agony in her past life; what was a little physical pain now?
Just then, the sound of footsteps came from the courtyard.
The Mu matriarch put on an arrogant air and screamed, "Where is everyone? Are you dead? Ni Cuihua! Get out here! Don't you know we have company?"
Ni Cuihua ran out immediately. "Mother, Jinbao. Who is this?"
Standing between the Mu matriarch and Jinbao was a stout, decent-looking middle-aged woman.
The Mu matriarch announced, "This is Ashu, my niece from my mother's side. Ashu is nine months pregnant. Make sure you take excellent care of her. Since she is expecting, any good food or drink we have must be given to her first! Do you understand?"
