With a faint smile, Ni Yang remarked, "This one is the youngest!"
Ever since Mo Erbao found his feet, he had insisted on walking everywhere independently. He rarely required an adult to carry him, unless Ni Yang herself was adamant about holding him in her arms.
On the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, Ni Yang and Mo Qishen traveled to Shanghai with their children.
The moment Du Jiaojiao laid eyes on the three youngsters, her voice cracked with sheer excitement. "Goodness! They are absolutely precious! Yangyang, they look exactly like you!"
Anticipating their arrival, Du Jiaojiao had specifically recruited several nannies experienced in childcare. She was determined to have Ni Yang and the family stay at the Du manor for an extended visit.
A mountain of small toys had also been prepared for them.
Ni Yang chuckled and replied, "They did inherit my eyes. By the way, Sister Jiaojiao, have you still not found a partner this year?" Despite being nearly forty, Du Jiaojiao remained unattached.
Du Jiaojiao let out a heavy sigh. "I just haven't met the right person! Why don't you play matchmaker for me, Yangyang?"
In her younger years, Du Jiaojiao had no interest in matrimony.
However, as the years passed, she found herself wanting to settle down, yet a suitable match seemed elusive.
Ni Yang promised, "Of course, I’ll keep a lookout once I return and find someone who fits you well."
"It's a promise then!"
"On another note, Sister Jiaojiao, where is sister-in-law?" Ni Yang asked. During previous visits, Chu Xiangyi was always there to welcome them, making her absence this year quite conspicuous.
At the mention of Chu Xiangyi, Du Jiaojiao sighed again. "Since the loss of her child, Xiangyi has become a shadow of her former self. She spends her days staring blankly out the window. It spiraled into deep depression. Later, a severe fever damaged her vocal cords; she's lost her voice now, and her mental state is quite fragile."
"Good heavens! How could things turn out like this?" Ni Yang was visibly stunned.
"Perhaps it is simply her lot in life," Du Jiaojiao added. "Shall I take you to see her?"
"Yes, please," Ni Yang nodded.
When they reached Chu Xiangyi’s quarters, they found she already had a visitor.
Stepping inside, they saw Grandpa Du sitting there.
Grandpa Du was holding a bowl of soup, carefully feeding medicine to Chu Xiangyi.
"Come now, open up and take your medicine."
Chu Xiangyi remained motionless, clutching a pillow to her chest while gazing vacantly out at the world beyond the glass.
"Brother Du, sister-in-law."
"You've arrived." Grandpa Du looked up briefly.
"How is she doing?" Ni Yang inquired softly.
Grandpa Du exhaled slowly. "The outlook isn't good. Would you like to examine her?"
Ni Yang took a seat and reached for Chu Xiangyi’s wrist to check her pulse.
Throughout the examination, Chu Xiangyi showed no sign of recognizing Ni Yang. She remained frozen in the same vacant posture, appearing like a silent mummy.
The symptoms were exactly as Du Jiaojiao had explained.
Her depression was profound.
A mental affliction of this magnitude required professional psychological intervention.
After a moment, Ni Yang withdrew her hand. "Brother Du, I recommend that sister-in-law sees a psychologist." Medication alone would never be enough to pull Chu Xiangyi out of this abyss.
Grandpa Du replied, "A specialist has visited several times, but there’s been no progress. She must find the strength to save herself."
"That's true; the core of depression is persistent low mood. If her mindset improves, she can recover. If all else fails, perhaps taking her on a journey for a change of scenery might help."
Grandpa Du nodded slightly in concurrence.
After lingering in the room for a short while, Du Jiaojiao grew restless and prepared to depart.
Grandpa Du said, "Go on ahead. I'll stay by her side a bit longer."
Du Jiaojiao linked her arm with Ni Yang’s. "Then Yangyang and I will take our leave first."
Grandpa Du gave a small nod.
Once Ni Yang and Du Jiaojiao were out of sight, Grandpa Du’s expression shifted. He picked up the bowl of herbal medicine and dumped the contents into a nearby potted plant. "You had better behave yourself lately," he said coldly. "Otherwise, I will drag the entire Chu Family down to ruin with you!"
Chu Xiangyi’s vacant expression did not flicker.
In her current withered state, what power did she have to do anything?
Grandpa Du absentmindedly rubbed his Buddha Beads as he stood by the window, watching the horizon.
He didn't leave the room until another half hour had passed.
Upon stepping out, he ran into Zhao Yu, who was carrying Mo Dabao while Mo Erbao toddled along behind her.
"Uncle Du!" Zhao Yu prompted the children, "Quickly, say hello to Uncle Du."
Mo Erbao, always the sharp one, chirped, "Fufu!"
With a smile, Grandpa Du crouched down and lifted Mo Erbao into his arms, planting a kiss on the toddler's cheek. "This is Zi’an, isn't it?"
Surprisingly, the usually timid Mo Erbao didn't pull away. He allowed Grandpa Du to hold him, staring back with wide, inquisitive eyes.
Zhao Yu looked on in amazement. "How could you tell he was Erbao?"
Had the boy not been walking, she wouldn't have been able to distinguish between the two herself!
