Noah crouched near a wide scorch mark burned deep into the tree bark, running two fingers along the char.
"Fresh," he said. "Days old, maybe. Not weeks."
Storm hovered a short distance off, wings beating slow, still tracking something in the far distance with the same unbroken focus he’d carried since the crash.
Noah straightened, scanning the wider clearing. More scorch marks scattered through the trees around them, some old and weathered, some fresh enough the bark still smelled faintly of smoke. Deep gouges ran along several trunks at roughly chest height, claw marks spaced too wide for anything human-sized, and further out, a wide swath of flattened undergrowth stretched in a rough trail, grass and brush pressed down like something massive had dragged itself through repeatedly.
’Territory markers,’ he thought, following the trail with his eyes. ’Or feeding grounds. Something big enough to leave claw marks that spaced apart, and it’s been through here more than once.’
He picked his way along the trail, Storm drifting overhead, still watching the horizon.
’Storm reacted like this once before,’ Noah thought, working through it as he walked. ’The alpha’s planet. Same rigid posture, same refusal to relax even after the immediate threat cleared.’ He frowned, stepping over a fallen branch snapped clean through. ’But that time, it was Ivy who reacted too, and only the two of them, the ones outside the domain. Nyx, Ares, Gail, all the hatchlings, they stayed completely calm the whole time, even though two years earlier they’d all felt that exact same call from inside the domain, across an impossible distance.’
He stopped walking, turning the puzzle over properly now that there was nothing immediate demanding his attention.
’So proximity doesn’t trigger the same response distance does. That’s backwards from how you’d expect it to work. You’d think being physically close would hit harder, not softer.’ He resumed walking, slower now, still thinking. ’Unless it’s not actually about distance at all. Unless it’s about which dragons are inside the domain versus outside it. Something about the domain itself might be dampening whatever signal they’re all picking up on.’
He thought about the shrine then, unbidden. The ice giants. The carved woman with her arms raised, creatures circling her like she’d built the very concept of them from nothing. The pendant at her collarbone, worn smooth by centuries, an eclipse pressed into stone, identical to the coin his own parents had given him at a gala he’d barely understood the weight of at the time.
’The system confirmed she’s tied to my Ruler Bloodline,’ he thought. ’Refused to say how. And now Storm’s doing the exact same thing he did on that planet, except we’re nowhere near it. Different system, different star, as far as I can tell.’
He looked up at Storm, still hovering, still fixed on the same point in the distance.
’Which means either this is a coincidence,’ Noah thought, ’or whatever that woman actually is, whatever she left behind on that mountain, isn’t confined to one planet. Maybe it’s bigger than that. Maybe it’s threaded through more places than just the one I happened to stumble onto first.’
He kept walking, Storm pacing him from above, and the trail widened into something closer to a clearing, grass flattened in a rough circular pattern, more scorch marks scattered along its edges.
A low, rumbling growl rolled out from the treeline ahead.
Noah stopped.
[BEAST DETECTED]
Three shapes emerged from the brush, and his first thought was that someone had taken a snapping turtle and scaled it up to the size of a small transport, then decided the shell alone wasn’t intimidating enough and added a mane of coarse, bristling fur around its neck and shoulders, thick as a lion’s, bristling with what looked like sharpened quills threaded through the hair itself.
[Classification: Category 5 Beast — Manecarapace]
[Threat Assessment: High]
The lead one reared up on thick hind legs, a roar tearing out of its beaked mouth loud enough to rattle loose bark off the nearest trees, and charged.
Storm dove to meet it before Noah had fully processed the threat, ice crackling along both forelimbs as he slammed into the creature’s flank, the impact skidding it sideways through the dirt.
The second one turned toward Storm, and the third came straight at Noah.
He blinked to the side, letting its charge carry it past him into empty space, and drove a Rend-charged punch into its exposed hind leg as it passed. The limb buckled with a wet crack, the creature bellowing in pain, and Noah followed through with a second strike to its shell that cracked the plating clean through.
It spun on him fast for something its size, mane bristling wider, quills lifting stiff and threatening, and launched a volley of them straight at his chest.
Noah threw up a quick Void Barrage shot to intercept the worst of it, the erasure catching most of the quills mid-flight, but two got through anyway, embedding shallow in his shoulder with enough force to sting sharp.
"Okay." He yanked one free, wincing. "Rude."
He closed the distance and finished it with a clean strike through the crack he’d already opened in its shell, the creature collapsing with a final, drawn-out groan.

Storm tore through his own fight with brutal efficiency, ice spreading thick across the ground beneath the second creature’s feet, freezing it in place just long enough for a lightning strike to arc down through its exposed mane, the current traveling straight through the metal-like quills into its body.
[Manecarapace defeated. +950 EXP]
The first one, still recovering from Storm’s initial slam, staggered upright and turned to flee, and Storm caught it mid-turn with a final burst of ice, encasing one hind leg solid enough to drop it back to the ground, following through with a bite that ended it clean.

Noah exhaled, rolling his injured shoulder, watching the notifications settle.
"Big," he said, glancing at the fallen creatures. "Slow to turn, though. That’s something."
Storm rumbled, already banking back toward him, though his eyes kept drifting back toward that same fixed point on the horizon even mid-flight.
They kept moving.
The forest gradually thinned as the ground rose, trees giving way to bare rock and scattered scrub, the terrain climbing steady toward something Noah couldn’t yet make out through the haze. More claw marks scored the exposed stone here, deeper, older, layered over each other in a way that suggested this particular path had been walked, or clawed through, for a very long time.
’This is a route,’ Noah thought, studying the marks as he climbed. ’Not random wandering. Something’s been coming this way, repeatedly, for a long time. Long enough to wear a real path into stone.’
He found a wider scorch pattern near a jutting outcrop, this one different from the others, a near-perfect circle burned into the rock, edges too clean to be random fire damage.
’That’s not claws,’ he thought, crouching to examine it. ’That’s something with actual precision behind it. Not an animal thrashing around. Something focused.’
His system flickered.
[ENERGY DETECTED]
[Distance: 3km]
He looked up toward Storm, hovering higher now, wings beating slow against a wind that had picked up as they climbed.
"Getting closer," Noah muttered.
They pressed on, the terrain growing rougher, and twice more Noah had to fight through smaller threats, a pack of low, quick creatures with segmented, chitin-plated bodies that moved in loose formation and spat corrosive fluid from retractable glands along their jaws, easily handled with a few precise Void Barrage shots. A single larger beast, something closer to a boar crossed with armored plating along its spine, charged him from a blind ridge and took three solid hits before finally going down, the last one a Rend-charged strike that punched clean through its skull.

Each fight added its own weight of exhaustion, but nothing genuinely threatened him the way the Karnfly swarm had earlier, and Noah found himself settling into a rhythm again, methodical, efficient, mind still chewing on the larger puzzle even while his body handled whatever the terrain threw at him.
’The bloodline connects to something bigger than one shrine,’ he thought, cresting another rise, the terrain finally leveling out ahead into something closer to a wide plateau. ’That’s the only explanation that actually fits what I’m seeing. Storm doesn’t react like this to random threats. He didn’t react like this to the Karnflies, or the Manecarapace, or anything else on this planet so far. Just this one specific thing, whatever it is, out there in the distance.’
He thought of the General then, unbidden, the Ruler Bloodline flag that had appeared in both their profiles, unexplained. The way the General’s own power had been described, void stone fused directly into his own body, absolute energy absorption on a scale nobody else in human space could match. If that flag meant the same thing for both of them, connected to the same source, the same ancient woman, the same shrine—
’Then whatever’s out there,’ Noah thought, ’might not just be about me. It might be about all of it. Every piece of this puzzle I’ve been collecting since that first shrine, still not fitting together cleanly.’
His system flickered again.
[ENERGY DETECTED]
[Distance: 1km]
Storm’s wings beat harder now, gaining altitude, hovering high above Noah with his whole body locked rigid, eyes fixed dead ahead.
Noah quickened his pace, cresting the final rise onto the plateau proper, and stopped.
A sheer wall of mountain rose ahead of him, dark stone streaked with mineral veins that caught the light in faint, shifting colors, and set into the rock face, easily thirty feet tall, stood a door.
Not natural. Not weathered the way the surrounding stone had weathered. Carved deliberately, edges clean despite whatever centuries had passed, twin panels sealed together at a seam running dead center, no visible mechanism, no handle, nothing that suggested a conventional way through.
Noah approached slowly, boots crunching over loose gravel, and stopped a few feet from the seam, studying the surface.
Near the base, set into the stone at roughly waist height, sat a small recessed shape, smooth-edged, clearly meant to receive something rather than simply decorate the door.
He crouched, studying the shape closely.
Circular. A slight ridge running around its outer edge, and at its center, a subtle indentation that matched, unmistakably, the exact profile of a coin.
Noah’s breath caught.
"I don’t believe it," Noah said, already summoning a particular object from his void storage.
The Eclipse coin appeared in his hand a second later.
He held it up, comparing the shape against the recess in the door.
A perfect match.
Storm dropped from the sky behind him, landing hard, wings folding tight, eyes still locked on the door with an intensity that hadn’t wavered once since the moment they’d first crashed into this system.
Noah stared at the coin in his hand, then back at the door.
"Well," he said quietly. "Guess we know what this trip was actually about."
