The caravan continues its journey through the harsh desert. Concerned about the dwindling supplies and the well-being of the children, some men begin to voice their unease about the Saintess Sect's intentions. Their suspicions grow upon reaching a peculiar, isolated forest within the barren landscape, especially after witnessing the sect disciples escorting numerous children.

I question if, upon learning the truth of others coveting their very lives, they would still so readily offer themselves up.

"How many people did we make contact with last night?" he inquired.

"Not a great number, merely around eight hundred," another man responded.

While calling eight hundred few is an understatement, it is, in truth, a considerable amount. However, when contrasted with the disciples of the Saintess Sect and their other followers, it presents as a rather meager figure.

"We managed to gather approximately two hundred more individuals throughout the day today, bringing our total to a thousand people," another man chimed in.

"That should suffice."

The man at the forefront contemplated for a moment, deeming the number adequate.

Should they engage the disciples of the Saintess Sect in direct combat, they would undoubtedly be outmatched. Yet, their objective was to seize the food and supplies before making a swift retreat, a task for which this number should be sufficient.

"Remember, you are to await the signal. The moment I give the command to run, immediately seize the goods from the nearby horse carriages and flee! Naturally, if you can take a few children with you, that would be even better."

Ever since he learned of the abundance of children, he had been pondering the reasons behind the Saintess Sect's decision to gather so many young ones.

He surmised that the destiny of these children likely held no better prospects than their own, perhaps even worse. If not, why would they not recruit more adults and instead focus their efforts on the children?

Although he did not consider himself a noble hero, saving even one was superior to none. Furthermore, taking more children might potentially enhance their chances of success.

"If we are to take the children, we must do so in pairs," the man beside him suggested.

One person would intercept the child from the Saintess Sect disciples while the other secured the supplies. Otherwise, the burden of carrying both a child and provisions would undoubtedly complicate their escape.

"Very well, proceed to organize everyone. Find a partner nearby," the leading man agreed with a nod.

As long as they could achieve their escape, that would be sufficient. If a thousand people were to each take one child in pairs, they would be absconding with more than half of the children, resulting in a significant loss for the Saintess Sect.

"Boss, wouldn't taking the children be too perilous?" someone voiced their dissent, believing their escape would be more nimble without the added encumbrance.

"Fool!"

The leader shot him a disdainful glance, uttering the word with contempt.

"Do you truly believe we could escape without the children as leverage?"

Observing the current circumstances, it was evident that these children held the key. Why else would the Saintess Sect expend such considerable effort to bring them here? They must serve some crucial purpose.

With the children in their possession, they could orchestrate a rescue. Furthermore, should pursuit arise, the children would serve as their most valuable hostages.

Possessing the children would compel the Saintess Sect to deliberate carefully before making any aggressive moves.

"Remember, the children represent our most crucial bargaining chip."

Fortunately, the Saintess Sect disciples, in their apprehension of the children being discovered, had stationed them at the rear, inadvertently providing the perfect opportunity.

"I comprehend now."

The man who had initially objected remained silent after hearing the explanation.

Meanwhile, within the confines of the Little Forest, several disciples of the Saintess Sect emerged, engaging in discussions with their fellow sect members who had arrived with a large contingent.

"Why have you only just arrived? It has been days!"

The senior disciple of the Saintess Sect regarded the newly arrived disciple with a look of reproach.

The Sect Master had repeatedly urged their arrival, yet no one had appeared. Consequently, their only recourse was to wait and dispatch individuals periodically to survey the area outside the Little Forest.
