Furthermore, in the harsh desert, one's sense of direction falters, and straying from the intended path would undoubtedly spell doom.
During a pause in their journey, the accompanying men began to voice their inquiries about the mission's true destination. They were curious about where this expedition was headed and whether any significant dangers lay in wait.
However, despite their persistent attempts to glean information, nothing could be uncovered, and a growing sense of unease began to fester within their hearts.
"Why are there children being brought along? Take a look over there; aren't those all children?"
Earlier, the disciples of the Saintess Sect had kept the children and the men separated, preventing any interaction. It was only now that someone finally spotted the children, and though their numbers were few, the loud wails they emitted were impossible to ignore.
"I hear a child crying, and it sounds like a boy," one man commented aloud.
The Saintess Sect is exclusively comprised of female disciples. Even if a disciple were to have a child, any son would be discarded and not raised within the Sect. Therefore, the presence of boys was utterly inexplicable.
"I heard it too. What kind of mission are they undertaking while bringing children? Whose child did they bring along?" other men chimed in, confirming they had also heard the cries.
Yet, some among them did not ponder the matter too deeply, readily assuming that a man recruited by the Saintess Sect for this mission had simply brought his own child.
"The disciples of the Saintess Sect are becoming quite considerate, allowing them to bring their children into the group; it's just going to cause trouble for everyone, though."
"Precisely, bringing a child on such an arduous journey, what is the logical purpose?"
The assembled group began to murmur amongst themselves, collectively feeling that the man who brought a child was being inconsiderate, creating unnecessary difficulties for the entire party.
Naturally, there were also individuals with keener senses who found the sound of the crying to be peculiar. They frowned, casting glances at the others. "Why do I feel as though it doesn't sound like just one child crying?"
Could he have misheard? It sounded to him like multiple children crying. Was it possible for a single child's cries to blend so seamlessly? And with such varied pitches?
"I don't believe it sounds like the cries of only one child. Are there many children in this contingent?"
Upon hearing this, a few men with particularly sharp hearing readily agreed. Throughout their travels, the Saintess Sect disciples had maintained a strict separation between them and the group at the rear, leaving them uncertain whether those individuals were even human.
Could the group trailing behind consist entirely of children?
"I noticed the horse carriage at the back earlier, and it appeared to be significantly more luxurious than ours. Could it be... all for the children?" someone whispered, voicing a growing suspicion.
Children, why would they be bringing children on a mission like this? Do they have an excess of resources?
A dark cloud seemed to pass over everyone's expressions as the children's cries continued to echo. They all understood the grim implication of bringing a large group of children—these individuals were being dispatched to their certain demise.
Within the Seasonal Moon Plane, such grim occurrences were not entirely unheard of. During that particular incident, how many young lives were lost? How many families were irrevocably shattered?
"How about I go and take a look?"
Someone tentatively suggested, sensing that something sinister was unfolding.
"Absolutely not."
The moment the words left his mouth, several individuals beside him quickly moved to restrain him.
Were they weary of living? Could they, mere common folk, presume to casually investigate the affairs of the esteemed Saintess Sect? They possessed neither status nor influential backing.
Moreover, despite the outwardly gentle demeanor of the Saintess Sect disciples, their actions were known to be utterly ruthless once provoked.
They were present solely to complete their assigned task and earn their pay; they had no desire to jeopardize their lives. Such a risk would come at far too great a cost.
