After sending her daughter to kindergarten the next day, Mei Ya went to the company with her husband. Although she had been to the family company before, that day was different as she was there with the intention of going to work.
Since she wasn’t familiar with the company’s processes and business yet, she started out as an assistant. Eager to return to the workplace, she worked diligently, asking Ye Qiu whenever she encountered something she didn’t understand, and she quickly got into the swing of things.
Ye Qiu’s company was in the clothing industry and had its own small factory. Its largest orders came from nearby schools for student uniforms. However, Ye Qiu intended to expand the company, so this year he hired several designers to venture into the market.
Being their first foray into the market, there were many aspects they couldn’t quite understand, and although they hadn’t lost money, they hadn’t made much profit either.
After assessing the company’s situation, Mei Ya felt her husband’s decision was right. Even if they could always secure the nearby schools’ orders, the future profits would be limited, and the company could only develop up to its current level. If they wanted to expand, they had to enter the market.
However, they didn’t have much money to hire excellent designers, so their creations were typical designs seen in the market. Other factories were larger and offered more styles, making their competitiveness naturally inferior.
In the short term, if they wanted to expand, they either needed unique designs or had to enlarge the factory to reduce labor and material costs. But the second option was quite unrealistic for them as the initial cost of expanding the factory was too high. If they couldn’t secure large orders, they would face closure. Thus, the only path available was the first one, but finding good designers was not that easy.
"What do you think about these?" After a busy day, Ye Qiu showed Mei Ya several design sketches he had created.
Mei Ya was intrigued and excitedly asked, "Where did you get these?"
"I designed them when I had some free time," Ye Qiu shrugged. "I don’t know if they’re any good, but I feel my random attempts might be better than the ones from the designers I hired."
"You’re right," Mei Ya affirmed. She wasn’t saying it casually. Coming from a family with decent conditions, she had studied art since she was young. Coupled with years of shopping experience, her basic appreciation skills were strong. She had also seen the designs from their hired designers earlier, which paled in comparison to her husband’s.
"How did you suddenly become interested in design? You never mentioned it," she asked, amazed.
"I usually see our designers’ work and feel there are many things that could be changed. But since I haven’t studied design, I feared being laughed at if I mentioned it, so I casually drew a few sketches myself. It’s only now that you’re here that I dare to show them to you." Ye Qiu told a fib without hesitation. Mei Ya, considering there’s no other possibility, had to believe him. She was simply too surprised to react immediately.
"Honey, I think the clothes you’ve designed will definitely sell well."
"Really? But I haven’t studied design. Will there be any flaws?" Ye Qiu frowned, knowingly asking the question. How could his designs have flaws? After all, he used to be one of the top designers in the world; he intentionally designed more ordinary pieces this time.
"I’m not sure either. Why don’t you spend some time learning from the other designers? Don’t focus on their creativity, just learn some basics."
Ye Qiu hesitated, "Isn’t that inappropriate? What if the designers think I plan to fire them after learning from them? It might cause resistance."
"Then maybe sign up for a class? I recall Xinrui’s dance school might have one."
Ye Qiu laughed, "Perfect, when Xinrui learns dance, I’ll learn design. Why don’t you also enroll in a class? Waiting alone will be boring; you can learn design with me. It might be useful for the company’s future! Having a foundation will prevent employees from fooling us. Or, you could learn management, and while I’m designing, you’ll manage the company eventually."
Initially, Mei Ya wasn’t inclined to agree, but Ye Qiu’s words moved her. Her husband was right; learning either design or management was a great choice.
They settled on that decision. Although Mei Ya began to get busier, she felt fulfilled. Not spending every day with her mother-in-law brightened her mood visibly, even her complexion improved.
When their family of three went to celebrate Mei Ya’s mother’s birthday, Mrs. Mei, Li Baqin, quietly asked, "Did your mother-in-law return to her hometown? You seem much younger, and your relationship with Ye isn’t as tense."
Mei Ya smiled, cupping her cheek, "Really, my complexion has improved a lot?"
"Yes, wouldn’t lie to you. I’m not trying to badmouth Ye Qiu’s mother, but the lives of elderly and young people should be separate. Next time advise Ye not to bring her back too soon."
"Mom, actually my mother-in-law didn’t return to her hometown," Mei Ya laughed lightly.
Li Baqin inquired with confusion, "Then what’s going on?"
"I started working again, thanks to Ye Qiu’s idea. We leave as a family of three in the morning, have dinner together upon returning, and then attend class, reducing the time spent with my mother-in-law. Naturally, there’s no conflict anymore, and I’m so busy I don’t have time for trivial matters. In fact, I’m mainly managing the company now, and my mother-in-law’s attitude towards me has improved considerably."
"What about Xinrui if you work outside? Is your mother-in-law taking care of her?" Li Baqin expressed concern. It stemmed from some undesirable habits of her in-laws. Elderly care can often spoil a child, hence her question.
"During summer break, I enrolled Xinrui in a day camp, so picking her up after work with Ye Qiu is no problem."
"How are you managing the company? Even if Ye agrees, how would your mother-in-law let this pass?" Li Baqin knew this in-law quite well. She’s proud of the son-in-law creating this company, often expressing astonishment, how could she bear letting her daughter manage what Ye Qiu accomplished?
Thinking of what Ye Qiu said that day, Mei Ya laughed, "It was Ye Qiu’s idea; he deceived his mom, saying he was stressed about home and work, losing sleep and hair, suggesting I help. His mom, worried for her son, had to relent."
Li Baqin found it amusing hearing her daughter’s explanation, while also feeling reassured, "Ye Qiu seems to truly care for you. Make a good life together; his mom raised him diligently. It’s right for him to be filial. If conflicts arise again, be considerate of his feelings too."
Mei Ya murmured an agreement, her smile unchanged.
