"Senior, I’ll call the police right now. Are robbers really this arrogant these days?" Ye Qiu pulled out her phone and said anxiously.
"Wait a minute." Wang Chengyang grabbed Ye Qiu’s hand, his face a bit ugly. "We can’t call the police on this."
"Why?" Ye Qiu stared at him in shock. "What’s in there are all key pieces of evidence that can clear Senior Zhihua’s name, and your wallet and IDs are in there too!"
"But once we call the police, won’t there be a chance everything gets exposed?" Cold sweat broke out on Wang Chengyang’s forehead. "The timing isn’t right yet. We can’t startle the snake in the grass."
"But if we don’t call the police, we might never get it back!"
"It’s fine, I’ve got connections. I’ll definitely find it." Wang Chengyang forced himself to sound calm. Right now he could only hope that whoever robbed him had no idea how important the stuff inside was. If it was destroyed, that was one thing; what he feared was it getting leaked. But normally, robbers wouldn’t care about the fashion world. Maybe he was overthinking it.
"Do you really have a way to get it back, Senior?" Ye Qiu said worriedly.
"Don’t worry. You know what I’m capable of, don’t you? It’ll be fine. And my IDs are in there—if that robber really just wants money, he might even come looking for me."
"Alright then. Senior, go quickly. The sooner the robber gets caught, the better." Ye Qiu urged him.
"You’ll be fine going back alone?" Wang Chengyang asked her before getting into the car.
"I’ll be fine. I walk this road all the time."
"Even so, you’d better call a car and go back early. Since there was a robber around, it’s definitely not safe." Though he said that, he had no intention of taking Ye Qiu home. Instead, he drove off quickly in the same direction the robber had gone.
Ye Qiu let out a cold laugh as she watched him leave. Just then, her phone rang. She opened the message. The sender said the item had already been placed in the spot she’d designated. After reading, Ye Qiu transferred a sum of money, then deleted the message.
Before going home, she went by the designated place. With a mere thought, the item had already been stored in her space. By the time she reached home, she was extremely glad she’d been cautious, because the supposedly departed Wang Chengyang was actually waiting downstairs at her newly rented apartment complex.
Seeing Ye Qiu come back empty-handed, Wang Chengyang seemed to confirm something and quietly let out a sigh of relief. Then, with a smile on his face, he asked, "Why are you only getting back now?"
Ye Qiu pointed at her shoes. "My shoes broke, so I walked slower than usual. What about you? Weren’t you going after the robber?"
Wang Chengyang shook his head. "I didn’t catch him. But I’ve already informed my friends. I’m sure we’ll hear something soon."
Ye Qiu knew better than to believe him. The person was someone she’d met online, from out of town, and not even driving his own car. He came and went wearing a helmet and avoided surveillance cameras. Even the police might not be able to track him down. Ye Qiu didn’t believe for a second that Wang Chengyang had that kind of ability. And even if he did, he probably wouldn’t have the mind to keep investigating for long.
"That’s good then." Ye Qiu let out a breath of relief. "I hope it can be found soon. It’s late, Senior, you should head back and rest."
Having just convinced himself that the robbery had nothing to do with Ye Qiu, other thoughts now stirred in Wang Chengyang’s mind. He looked at her seriously. "Not going to invite me up for a bit?"
Ye Qiu’s face flushed slightly. "I’d better not. We’re both single. If people start talking, it won’t sound very nice. Senior, you should go back and rest early."
"That really hurts my feelings." He looked regretful, but after what had happened tonight, he didn’t push it. "I’ll ask you out again next time then."
Ye Qiu waved goodbye to him. As she watched his car go farther and farther away, the expression on her face grew colder and colder.
Back home, she carefully shut the door and drew the curtains, then took out Wang Chengyang’s document bag from her space. Inside, Zhan Yao’s original sketches were still intact. Ye Qiu quietly breathed a sigh of relief. Looked like that money had been worth spending.
But although she now had evidence of Li Zhihua’s plagiarism, the truth behind her sister’s death still hadn’t been uncovered. She needed to go scare Wang Chengyang a bit more.
This time, Ye Qiu didn’t spend money to hire anyone. Instead, she disguised herself and tossed a letter into Wang Chengyang’s home. The letter read: Mr. Wang, I’m sorry for stealing your bag, but I found some interesting things inside. Take a look first. After you’ve read it, let’s meet tomorrow afternoon at three at South City Park.
Face dark, Wang Chengyang opened and read the slip of paper. There was also a USB drive in the envelope. He plugged it into his computer and found that it contained information about him, Li Zhihua, and Zhan Yao.
"Surprised?" The next part on the USB read. "Tsk tsk, that famously talented beauty of a designer is actually a plagiarist. Imagine the sensation if that got out. But what interests me most is the deceased woman named Zhan Yao. Her death is really suspicious. After the public outcry died down, she’d already begun pulling herself together and was working on new designs. So why would she suddenly decide to kill herself?"
At this point, Wang Chengyang’s expression changed. How did this person know that? The briefcase that had been stolen from him didn’t contain Zhan Yao’s new work.
For that, Ye Qiu had Jian Lifan to thank. The last piece Zhan Yao completed before her death had gone to him. Clearly, after the assistant had finished sorting through the materials, Jian Lifan already had his suspicions. It wasn’t that he was paranoid; this industry was filled with people blinded by greed and profit. He couldn’t afford not to think more deeply.
So Jian Lifan had his assistant contact the former roommate from the dorm that Zhan Yao and Li Zhihua once shared. That classmate said she’d taken a year off because she couldn’t handle her roommate’s suicide. When the assistant found her, she was obviously shocked, especially when asked about Zhan Yao. She waved her hands repeatedly, saying she knew nothing, didn’t understand, and begged them not to ask her anything.
It wasn’t until the assistant dropped Jian Lifan’s name and said that Zhan Yao had been a Disciple Jian Lifan had once set his hopes on, and that this matter would not be easily brushed aside, that the girl finally spoke in pain.
"I don’t know anything. I’m not lying." The girl’s name was Chang Fei. She was usually very withdrawn and didn’t have many friends at school. Only Zhan Yao would occasionally talk to her.
"I don’t know what happened between Zhan Yao, Li Zhihua, and Wang Chengyang. But Zhan Yao once told me that it was Wang Chengyang who pursued her first. She absolutely wasn’t some shameless third party throwing herself at him and wrecking his Emotion with Li Zhihua. After the plagiarism incident, Zhan Yao was very depressed, but she quickly pulled herself together. She even said she would use her work to prove herself. That day she told me she’d gone home and had something to say to her dad. When she came back, her mood was even more unstable. That night, she jumped from the building."
Chang Fei was deeply dejected. "If I’d known she was going to jump, I should have tried harder to talk her out of it that day."
"Then why didn’t you tell the police any of this?"
"Would it have done any good? And she really didn’t seem right at the time. Besides, Li Zhihua gave me a sum of money. She told me not to say anything I shouldn’t, not to let the mess between the three of them affect her reputation. I figured maybe Zhan Yao’s death had more to do with something her family said, that it might not really be about Li Zhihua. And I badly needed that money, so I kept quiet."
