Zhao Yao, now renamed Ye Yao, has been brought home by her biological parents, Ye Bai and Shen Huiran. However, her parents are clearly disappointed by her timid demeanor and her past academic dishonesty. They have decided to keep Ye Xingyan, the girl who was raised as their daughter, due to their emotional bond and her established place in the family. Ye Yao is instructed to be cautious around her grandparents and uncle, and Ye Xingyan pleads with her uncle not to dislike her.

"Uncle, did you prepare that room for her?" Ye Xingyan asked nervously. She would rather her uncle say it was prepared for some other girl than for the one who had taken over her identity.

"Is there a problem?" Ye Qiu finally responded to her. His gaze looked calm, yet in Ye Xingyan’s eyes it carried immense pressure.

Ye Xingyan’s heart trembled, a little hurt and a little helpless. She really wanted to ask: is blood relation really that important? Is it really more important than the more than ten years she’d spent by their side?

Yet from start to finish, she never thought about what exactly she had accompanied Ye Qiu through. Four years of approaching him with ulterior motives—why should others treat her differently because of that?

"Uncle, even if you’re going to be good to her from now on, could you at least try to understand how I feel? Just a little, really just a little. I’m really confused right now, and very scared." Ye Xing lowered her head, looking extremely pitiful. "I swear I won’t take anything that belongs to her. I just want to stay by your side, that’s all."

"I think she must be very scared too." Ye Qiu looked seriously into her eyes. "I did a simple investigation before. Her foster mother—who is actually your real mom—treated her very badly. The neighbors said beating and scolding were common, and if she didn’t finish the housework, she wasn’t even allowed to do her homework. And all of this should have been your life. Even though your parents don’t care much, you should know very clearly that you’ve taken fifteen years of her life."

"I..." Ye Xingyan was rendered speechless by Ye Qiu’s blunt words, feeling utterly humiliated.

"Suddenly going from that kind of environment into a wealthy, powerful family’s life—do you think she wouldn’t be scared, that she wouldn’t feel out of place?" Ye Qiu continued. "Helping her get familiar with our environment and fit into our life is something you ought to do."

The more Ye Qiu said, the more Ye Xingyan felt her face burning, as if she were some shameless person, taking an enormous advantage yet still daring to make demands.

But was this her fault? She wasn’t the one who caused any of this. When their identities were switched back then, she had only been a tiny baby who knew nothing, okay?

If her identity had been correct from childhood, if she had grown up used to that kind of life, how would she have ended up so insecure and afraid of losing everything like she was now?

"Uncle, I get it. I’ll recognize my own identity from now on." Ye Xingyan said in a sulky tone, deliberately belittling her place in this family.

Ye Qiu glanced at her again. "Don’t worry, your parents won’t be willing to let you suffer any grievances."

The moment this was brought up, Ye Xingyan couldn’t help feeling secretly proud. No matter what, Mom and Dad loved her, maybe even more than they loved their biological daughter.

But who could guarantee they would always love her? Time and Emotion were the most unreliable things. Ye Xingyan pressed her lips together. No, she couldn’t just wait passively like this. Since her uncle refused to help her and even her parents’ side was uncertain, she had to find another way to make sure she could always live an upper-class life.

"We’re here." Outside the house, Ye Bai and Shen Huiran brought Ye Yao home. Clutching her schoolbag nervously, Ye Yao got out of the car and stared in disbelief at the estate. So this was her home?

"Go on in. Your Sister Xingyan is still at home waiting for you."

By this time, Ye Xingyan had already heard the noise and come out. Ye Yao looked up and saw a finely dressed girl standing at the entrance. She was wearing a little white dress, her hair tied in a half-bun adorned with tiny pearl hairpins. There was no necklace on her neck, but on her wrist she wore a bracelet inlaid with small diamonds. Then Ye Yao looked down at her feet—those delicate leather shoes were something she’d never even dared to dream of.

She glanced at her own washed-faded school uniform, whose cuffs and pant legs were even a bit short, then at her white sneakers that had turned yellow and were coming unglued from too many washes. She instantly felt inferior and at a total loss.

She thought she finally understood why Mom and Dad couldn’t bear to part with this girl called Ye Xingyan. She was so pretty, her skin so fine, her hair black and fluffy, like a meticulously made imported doll in a shop window, while there was nothing about herself that could compare.

"Sister Yao, you’re finally here. I’ve been waiting for you for so long." Ye Xingyan walked forward with an affectionate smile and reached for her hand. Her fair fingers seemed to glimmer under the sun.

Thinking about her own dark, sallow skin, and about the slightly grimy fingernails from doing housework before she came, Ye Yao instinctively pulled her hand back behind her.

Ye Xingyan’s hand paused, and then a forlorn expression appeared on her face. "Sister Yao, do you not like me? Or are you blaming me for having taken your parents before? I didn’t mean to. Let’s be good sisters from now on, okay?"

She sounded so aggrieved that Shen Huiran immediately frowned. "You have to understand that Xingyan is innocent. How can you blame her?"

Just because she’d instinctively dodged, she was being scolded and wronged like this. Ye Yao felt utterly at a loss. Had she really done something wrong?

"I..."

She was just about to explain when Ye Xingyan spoke before her. "Mom, it’s okay. Sister Yao probably didn’t mean it. I won’t take it to heart. Sister Yao just came back; you have to treat her better."

Hearing this, Shen Huiran’s heart instantly softened. She sighed with emotion, "Why are you so sensible? If only you were Mom’s real daughter."

Ye Yao’s heart tightened. Was she overthinking it? Or did she really not deserve to be the Ye Family’s daughter?

"Ye Yao?" Just as she was lost in thought, a gentle, magnetic voice entered her ears. It sounded somewhat familiar. She looked up and saw a man smiling at her in a very pleasant way.

"Ye Qiu? It’s you?" she exclaimed in surprise, then quickly realized something was off. Why was he here? And his surname was also Ye? Then what was his relationship to her?

"Nonsense. How can you call an elder by his name directly? You should call him Uncle." Ye Bai scolded her.

"Uncle?" Ye Yao’s eyes widened.

"Hey!" Ye Qiu replied with a smile. "Didn’t expect we’d meet again like this, did you?"

As if finally seeing someone familiar, Ye Yao showed a relieved smile. "Mm."

"See, I told you we were fated." Ye Qiu spread his hands and invited her in. "From now on, we’re family. Come on in."

This exchange not only stunned Ye Bai and Shen Huiran, it also left Ye Xingyan utterly shocked. Inside, she was filled with doubts. Why did Uncle and Ye Yao know each other already? How did they meet?

Taking it a bit further, was finding out about the switched identities really that simple? Was this Ye Yao’s scheme, or Uncle’s? And why would they do this?
