"What have you done to Ye Qiu? Speak!" Zhang Shengnian, usually a man of gentle disposition, found his composure shattered because his foundation was severely shaken. The Zhang Group, a legacy passed down through generations starting from his grandfather, was something he had sworn to protect from decline upon his father's passing.
Yet, despite his best efforts and the beginnings of a transition to his son, the company had suffered such a devastating blow. His anger was thus ignited.
Ye Yun, unaccustomed to such intense confrontation, was visibly startled. Zhang Beichen, however, maintained a semblance of calm, replying, "Dad, you can't hold us entirely responsible. Didn't Ye Qiu falsely accuse her? Were we not permitted to gather evidence to refute her claims?"
"The accusation you refer to involves your mother-in-law's imprisonment for attempted murder, correct?" Mrs. Zhang scoffed. "I've already investigated; the evidence and testimonies are irrefutable. How can you possibly claim Ye Qiu fabricated the police's actions?"
"It was a false accusation; I know Xiao Yun’s mother. She would never do something like that," Zhang Beichen insisted.
"You *know* her? How long have you been associated with her, and what do you truly understand? For the sake of family assets, even the gentlest souls can resort to malevolent acts. You two are completely out of line!"
"We did not."
"Oh, you didn't? Then explain precisely how many foolish actions you took in your pursuit of evidence. Attempted kidnapping, no less, and you thought you hid it so well? Old Master Ye even had to clean up your mess. Do you genuinely believe Ye Qiu is neutralized?"
"We were merely trying to gather evidence!"
"Gather evidence? Is it permissible to commit crimes in pursuit of elusive proof? This is criminal conduct, something that warrants jail time, do you comprehend?" Zhang Shengnian regarded his son, profound disappointment etched on his face. He had envisioned his son surpassing expectations, yet here he was, disregarding the law. Had all those years of education been utterly wasted?
With those words, a flicker of fear ignited within both Zhang Beichen and Ye Yun. They had believed their actions were concealed, but could it be that their father/father-in-law had actually shielded them?
So, was Ye Qiu seeking retribution against the Zhang Group due to those transgressions? Yet, no significant harm had befallen her; why such an intense reaction?
"Dad, we will proceed to apologize to Eldest Lady Xiao Yun. If she is amenable to a peaceful resolution, then it shall be so. However, should she refuse, the Zhang Group is not so easily dismantled. Dad, Mom, please place your trust in me," Zhang Beichen declared with unwavering resolve.
Seeing his prompt and decisive response, Mr. and Mrs. Zhang felt a measure of reassurance. Truly, he was the son they had painstakingly raised—calm and responsible.
Their gaze then shifted to their daughter-in-law, Ye Yun, and their expressions hardened, particularly Mrs. Zhang's. She had long harbored the belief that Ye Yun was beneath her son. Now, with Ye Yun bringing such a monumental crisis to the family, her resentment intensified, and she began to contemplate strategies to erode her son's affection for his wife, paving the way for an amicable divorce.
Having occupied a position of status for so many years, she had weathered numerous storms. She understood that forcing a divorce would be met with her son's staunch opposition. Therefore, a gradual approach was necessary; after all, her son was still young, and there was no need for haste.
Sensing her mother-in-law's scrutinizing gaze, Ye Yun felt a wave of unease wash over her. A bitter resentment towards Ye Qiu began to fester within her. Why provoke conflict at this particular juncture? Could she not allow her a moment of peace?
"Mom, Dad, if there is nothing else, I will visit my father tomorrow," she managed, forcing a smile. "My father certainly won't stand idly by."
Only then did the Zhang parents bestow a semblance of warmth upon her, stating, "You merely need to act appropriately."
However, upon her arrival at the nursing home to see Ye Changfeng the following day, Ye Yun found herself barred from entry.
"What is the meaning of this? I wish to see my father; by what authority are you preventing me?" she demanded fiercely. "Do you have any idea who I am?"
"We apologize, Second Miss. These are the Eldest Lady's instructions. The Old Master requires rest, and the physician has advised against any disturbances," the nurse stated politely.
"I intend to enter. Let's see who dares to stop me." Ye Yun surged forward, only to be swiftly encircled and restrained by several security personnel.
The nurse offered another placating smile. "Our apologies, Second Miss, but these are the Eldest Lady's directives. As the daughter of Old Master Ye, surely you would not wish for his condition to deteriorate further?"
"This constitutes an abuse of authority! She has no right to impede me. I shall pursue legal action. Perhaps my father himself wishes to see me!"
"Second Miss, the Eldest Lady has indicated that you are welcome to sue. The Ye Group's legal team remains consistently prepared."
"You!" Ye Yun trembled with rage. When had she ever been subjected to such treatment? Simultaneously, a profound sense of dread enveloped her, for even with the advantage of a second chance at life, she found herself utterly outmatched by her sister.
A closed door was what Ye Yun encountered. Likewise, Zhang Beichen also faced a similar situation. Possessing memories from a future life, he was unfazed by the current plummeting stock prices of the Zhang Group. After their unsuccessful meeting, he boldly swore that Ye Qiu would one day regret this moment!
"President, what are our next steps?" the secretary inquired habitually after concluding her report with Ye Qiu.
"We proceed as originally planned. There's no need to show the Zhang family any special consideration," Ye Qiu responded with a composed demeanor, her voice devoid of any discernible emotion. She then proceeded to arrange a dinner engagement with her daughter.
"Mom, I'd like to introduce someone to you," Ye Shu conveyed over the phone, a hint of shyness in her tone.
Ye Qiu let out a soft chuckle, "A boyfriend?"
"Mhm," Ye Shu replied, her voice tinged with slight embarrassment.
"You're already twenty-one; having a boyfriend is perfectly normal. Bring him home," Ye Qiu said with understanding.
However, Ye Shu did not seem entirely pleased and voiced her hesitation, "Mom, he might not be what you expect."
"Oh? Is he married?"
Ye Shu was taken aback. "Of course not! I'm not that sort of person. What I mean is, he's not from our country."
"An overseas Chinese?"
"No, he's completely foreign, with golden hair and blue eyes," Ye Shu said cautiously, seemingly apprehensive about Ye Qiu's potential disapproval.
Ye Qiu chuckled again. "Don't worry. I'm not old-fashioned. Having a foreign boyfriend is absolutely fine. Just bring him over."
"But he's a bit older than me," Ye Shu continued, her voice trailing off.
Ye Qiu narrowed her eyes slightly. "How much older, precisely?"
"Eight years," Ye Shu confessed into the phone, holding her breath in anticipation of her mother's reaction.
"Eight years! That's quite a significant age gap!"
Anxiety crept into Ye Shu's voice. "But James treats me so wonderfully, Mom. Eight years isn't such a huge difference, is it? Grandpa is twenty years older than Granny Mei!"
"Can you truly compare your situation to theirs?" Ye Qiu asked, her brow furrowed. "Fine, bring him here so I can meet him."
Ye Qiu observed the foreign man before her. He claimed to be a nobleman and promised her a castle and countless jewels if she permitted her daughter to marry him.
She pursed her lips, finding his claims increasingly suspicious, leaning towards a scam or perhaps the actions of a complete simpleton.
