A beautiful glimmer of hope resided in the hearts of Zhang Beichen and Ye Yun; they wished to prove through their actions that Mei Chunli had been unjustly accused. This conviction even placed them in opposition to Ye Qiu.
Within the Ye Family's grand hall, several individuals sat with somber expressions. Ye Changfeng, presiding at the head, appeared particularly drained, though he made an effort to project strength. A physician and nurse stood by, ever-vigilant, a precaution Ye Qiu had insisted upon. After all, Ye Yun had previously fainted when the notion of her mother being framed was brought up.
"You assert that I deliberately framed your mother, Ye Yun. Do you possess any basis for such an accusation?" Ye Qiu inquired, her tone laced with mockery. Beside her, Ye Shu's fury intensified; she could never have imagined her admired aunt would utter such words.
Under Ye Qiu's piercing scrutiny, Ye Yun faltered momentarily before responding, her voice a low murmur yet brimming with animosity. "I have yet to uncover definitive proof, but I am certain my mother would never harm you. What conceivable reason would she have for such an act?"
"Then you will need to consult your mother," Ye Qiu replied impassively. "It is not for me to say."
Ye Yun rose abruptly, indignation fueling her words. "I believe you colluded with that driver, intentionally setting a trap for my mother merely to undermine me. You harbor apprehension towards me, don't you? You fear I will usurp your position?"
"Your imagination runs wild," Ye Qiu scoffed. "I, Ye Qiu, harbor no fear of anyone. While you display certain talents among the younger generation, you are far from worthy of being my adversary."
"You!" Ye Yun's chest heaved with rage. Realizing she could not sway Ye Qiu, she turned her plea to Ye Changfeng. "Father, do you truly believe Mother capable of harming others? She has been a part of this family for so many years. If she harbored malicious intent, why would she wait until now to act?"
Ye Changfeng released a profound sigh. He had not confided in anyone about the incredibly vivid dream he experienced the previous night, a dream so potent it nearly prevented him from waking.
In that dream, his elder daughter had indeed met with a vehicular accident. However, unlike reality, she had not survived. A monstrous truck had collided with Ye Qiu's vehicle, resulting in immediate fatalities, including a woman who was tragically pregnant.
The crash appeared to be a mere accident; even the authorities, though suspicious, found no evidence to the contrary.
Yet, the dream version of himself later unearthed unsettling truths. He discovered his wife had been covertly providing financial support to the driver involved, and subsequently, his wife had embraced religion, her late-night prayers a frequent sound.
It was then that the chilling realization dawned: his elder daughter's fatal accident might not have been accidental at all, but a carefully orchestrated scheme by his wife.
His wife had later tearfully confessed this to him. However, with the elder daughter already gone and the company's stock prices in turmoil, necessitating the younger daughter's presence to restore confidence, he found himself in a precarious position. How could he demand the truth from his wife, knowing the devastating impact it would have on the family?
He reasoned that since the elder daughter was lost, he would maintain the secret!
Upon awakening, Ye Changfeng remained in a state of bewildered confusion. He even questioned himself – had the elder daughter truly perished as in his dream, would he have sided with his wife?
He let out another somber sigh, acknowledging that he likely would have still chosen his wife, thereby inevitably wronging his elder daughter.
Perhaps that dream served as a premonition from a past existence. Gazing at his defiant younger daughter, recalling her imperious demeanor in the dream's world, he finally grasped the motivation behind his wife's actions!
Despite his desire to offer support, having already been complicit in wronging the elder daughter within the dream, he now found himself unable to condone the younger daughter's impetuous behavior in reality.
"Xiao Yun, there is irrefutable evidence," Ye Changfeng stated wearily. "Though my heart aches, I can no longer shield your mother's actions. You, too, must cease these baseless speculations. Stop causing such disturbances; the culpability undeniably rests with your mother. Do you not trust the police?"
Ye Yun's eyes widened in disbelief. Merely days prior, her father had trusted her mother implicitly, even securing the finest legal representation. What could account for this abrupt reversal?
A cold smile touched her lips. Truly, her mother could never measure up to her father's deceased first wife and his elder daughter, Ye Qiu. While she could perhaps overlook her father's deep-seated affections, she absolutely could not forgive the elder sister's inherent malice.
"Father, you are thus determined to align yourself with Elder Sister?" Ye Yun inquired, taking a deep, steadying breath.
Ye Changfeng regarded her with palpable anxiety. "I am aligning myself with the truth, Xiao Yun. I understand your reluctance to accept this, but this time, your mother is unequivocally at fault."
"I refuse to believe it!" Ye Yun cried out. "I reject your falsehoods, Father. You have always favored Elder Sister since our childhood. No matter how I devoted myself to you, no matter how diligently Mother served you, it was never enough to surpass Elder Sister. I despise you!"
With that, she swiftly departed. Zhang Beichen shot a hateful glare at Ye Qiu and Ye Shu before hurrying to follow her.
"Ye Qiu..." Ye Changfeng’s breathing grew shallow as he watched Ye Qiu persistently gesture towards the exit.
Promptly supplied with a respirator by the medical staff, Ye Qiu offered him a reassuring smile. "Dad, please don’t worry. As long as my younger sister doesn’t go too far, I won’t lay a hand on her."
Relief washed over Ye Changfeng at her words. However, as Ye Qiu turned away, a silent sneer played on her lips. She would only act if provoked, yet the resolute expressions of Ye Yun and Zhang Beichen signaled their intent to pursue the matter further.
It was rather amusing, though. Both had experienced rebirth, arriving from different realms. Would they ever discover each other’s true nature? And if they did, would their current affection remain intact?
"Mom, what do we do now? Will Auntie hold a grudge against us?" Ye Shu’s youthful face was etched with concern.
"We’ll deal with whatever comes, and first, we await the court’s decision," Ye Qiu stated, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "Don’t fret about it; concentrate on your studies. Mom will handle everything."
"Alright, Mom. Please be careful yourself. I’m worried Auntie might resort to something drastic."
"There’s no need for apprehension. Mom has honed her martial arts for years; ordinary individuals are no match for me. How has your own training been progressing?"
Mentioning her training, Ye Shu’s face brightened considerably. "Recently at school, the Taekwondo club was putting on a demonstration. I made a casual remark, and they actually challenged me. Not a single one could match my skills. Before, my classmates were impressed by foreign techniques, but now they admire me."
"Excellent work. However, regardless of your proficiency, never neglect your practice, understand?"
"I understand. Recently, a national coach extended an invitation to apply for sports credits, but I wasn’t particularly interested. Still, I did promise the coach that I would attend his martial arts school for an exchange program. Mom, may I go?"
Ye Qiu looked at her daughter’s eager expression and gently stroked her head. "Certainly, you may. With the current turmoil at home, getting away for some fresh air might do you good."
Little did she realize, her future son-in-law was awaiting Ye Shu at that very martial arts school.
