Mei Chunli's plot to have Ye Qiu killed in a staged accident is exposed when the female driver survives and reports her husband's conspiracy. The investigation leads back to Mei Chunli through the truck driver she hired. Despite the evidence, Mei Chunli is only asked to cooperate with the investigation, and Ye Yun, convinced of her mother's innocence, accompanies Ye Qiu to the police station.

Two police officers, one male and one female, accompanied Ye Qiu into the building. Initially, few people paid them any mind, but as Ye Qiu started his interrogation, everyone’s attention became fixated on the scene.

"I understand you have a daughter?"

The driver’s body instantly stiffened, though he fought to maintain a composed demeanor. "Yes."

"Were you not concerned that your actions of driving under the influence might break your daughter’s heart? Even if nothing had happened, getting apprehended by traffic police for DUI would land you in jail. Your daughter is scheduled for surgery next month; don’t you wish to be there with her, alongside her mother?"

"I was merely confused for a moment. I had no intention of striking your vehicle. Please accept my apologies."

"The apology isn’t for me; it’s for your daughter. Have you considered the profound disappointment she would feel if she couldn’t see you before her surgery? Medical professionals state that one’s emotional state can significantly impact recovery. Have you contemplated that if something were to happen to me, your daughter might have to carry the burden of having a father labeled as a murderer?" Ye Qiu inquired further.

The driver’s emotions began to churn visibly. "I am truly sorry. I deeply regret it. I had no such intention. I was simply overwhelmed with worry for my daughter’s illness, which led me to drink."

"Very well, let us assume for a moment that it wasn't intentional drunk driving. However, I was fully aware of my surroundings within the car at the time. It is evident that I swerved multiple times to avoid collision. Why, then, did you continue to pursue me? Was there genuinely no one instructing you?"

"No, it was just the alcohol. My mind wasn't clear enough."

"Yet, the subsequent examination indicated that your blood alcohol level was insufficient to cause such extreme impairment. I suspect you are not being truthful."

"I am telling the truth."

"Is that so? Have you given any thought to the fact that, besides myself, there was another individual in that vehicle who was being blocked? Had I not managed to divert my car towards the barrier, your truck would have collided with my vehicle and subsequently struck hers. She is merely twenty-five years old and is pregnant. How could you possibly be so devoid of compassion?"

"I didn't! It wasn't intentional! I truly did not mean to!" the truck driver exclaimed, clutching his head in evident distress.

"However, there is currently no evidence to substantiate your claim that your actions were not deliberate. My dashcam clearly captured your expression, which did not convey the confusion of intoxication but rather a look of clenched teeth, as if your actions were premeditated. Therefore, regardless of your defense, you will face sentencing, and it will not be lenient."

Upon hearing Ye Qiu’s words, the truck driver fell silent. He lowered his head, appearing profoundly regretful.

"Perhaps certain charitable organizations might contribute towards your daughter’s surgical expenses. But what then? Your daughter has no other close relatives besides you. Do you genuinely believe your extended family would take in the sickly daughter of a convicted criminal? Even if adopted, she would invariably live a life dependent on the charity of others, constantly subjected to the pointing fingers of society."

Observing the truck driver’s reddened eyes as he looked towards her, Ye Qiu continued, "However, in the majority of such circumstances, your daughter would likely be placed in an orphanage. You are undoubtedly aware of the conditions within such institutions; while improvements have been made to the systems, given your daughter’s delicate health, do you truly believe she would receive the specialized care she requires?"

"Absolutely not! My daughter is so precious! Someone will definitely take excellent care of her," the truck driver stated with an air of unwavering conviction.

Ye Qiu offered another smile. "Are you perhaps referring to the orchestrator behind all of this? Rest assured, I harbor no intention of deliberately causing suffering to your daughter. I will, however, maintain a close watch on her well-being following her placement. As for who will provide her with preferential treatment, I will conduct a thorough investigation. These matters you are so hesitant to disclose now will inevitably come to light sooner or later. It is merely a question of time. By that juncture, however, your current admissions will hold little significance, and your evasion could potentially exacerbate your sentence. Have you ever considered how old your daughter will be by the time you are released? Will she be able to forgive you for the hardships and indignities she will have endured?"

"You are despicable! Utterly shameless!" the driver suddenly erupted, his desire to strike Ye Qiu palpable, only to be restrained by the two attending police officers.

"In what way am I despicable or shameless? I have no intention of involving myself with your daughter’s future. I will not interfere with her placement, whether it be in an orphanage or with any specific treatment she receives. My sole objective is to ascertain the genuine cause of this vehicular accident." Ye Qiu fixed him with a cold stare. "I manage a substantial enterprise and can proudly state that I have never acted in a manner that violates my conscience. But you? Does your current conduct align with the values you wish to instill in your daughter?"

The truck driver lapsed into silence once more, and Ye Qiu allowed a faint smile to grace his lips. "We are both acutely aware of whether a hidden party orchestrated these events. The look you gave me just before plunging into the lake was unmistakably clear to me. I strongly advise you to confess your involvement truthfully; perhaps then I shall extend the utmost support to your daughter during her time in the orphanage. I regularly engage in charitable endeavors; this would merely be an additional commitment. However, should you refuse to cooperate, I shall arrange for surveillance, ensuring that the individual you conspire with dare not offer even the slightest assistance to your daughter. Ponder this carefully. My time is valuable, and I cannot afford to squander it on you any further."

Just as Ye Qiu was about to exit, the truck driver raised his head, his voice raspy, declaring, "I'll confess, I'll tell you everything."

The police officers present exchanged glances upon hearing this and promptly replaced the interrogators with two new individuals.

Ye Yun gazed at her elder sister, Ye Qiu, a complex mix of emotions swirling within her. An inexplicable anxiety filled her heart, a premonition that events beyond her control were about to unfold.

"See, he's going to reveal the person pulling the strings. Soon, we'll be able to bring Aunt Mei home," Ye Qiu reassured Ye Yun with a calm smile.

Ye Yun nodded assent, her eyes fixed unblinkingly on the interrogation room.

"Speak, who is the mastermind? How did you coordinate?" one of the officers demanded sternly.

"It was Mei Chunli who instructed me," the truck driver confessed, his complexion ashen.

Witnessing this, Ye Yun was utterly stunned, her eyes wide with disbelief. She averted her gaze from Ye Qiu, acutely aware that her sister’s hand, which had been gently stroking her head, had stilled.

"No falsehoods, confess truthfully," the officer pressed once more.

A knot of anxiety tightened in Ye Yun's chest, her eyes burning with a desperate hope that the truck driver would recant, claim it was a jest, or admit to lying. However, the reality starkly contradicted her desires.

"I am not lying; Mei Chunli approached me, asking for my assistance in using a car accident to eliminate her stepdaughter," he elaborated.

"When did she contact you?"

"Last month. My daughter fell ill, and we came here for her treatment. Upon learning of this, Mei Chunli visited the hospital and then proposed the arrangement to me."

"What proof do you have that she orchestrated this? And why did you agree to her plan?"

Ye Yun silently prayed, her heart aching. If her mother was truly involved, she desperately hoped there would be no evidence. Otherwise… otherwise…

She suppressed her breath, afraid to even contemplate the dire consequences that might follow.
