Zhang Beichen asks Ye Yun to be his date to a graduation party after his intended date, Xiao Shu, refuses. Ye Yun, initially hesitant as she is older and knows Zhang Beichen's family, eventually agrees when he pleads with her. Meanwhile, Ye Yun's mother expresses concern over Ye Yun's demanding work schedule at her new company, which is struggling with staffing and management issues, unlike her sister's large, established corporation.

"What troubles you? You seem quite out of it." Ye Changfeng, now advanced in years, possessed a light sleep easily broken. He mumbled, only half-aware.

"It’s nothing, really." Mei Chunli’s reply was soft, holding back her true thoughts. She simply felt the injustice of it all – why must Heaven burden her daughter with such arduous toil?

Her daughter was always so compliant. As a child, if discouraged from excelling, she would obediently refrain, never seeking to outshine others. Upon reaching adulthood, to sidestep conflict with her sharp-edged stepsister, she even relocated overseas for several years before returning.

Now, having finally secured her husband’s regard and launched her own modest enterprise, she was nonetheless consumed by work daily, utterly exhausted and without a moment’s respite. Her daughter could have easily coasted through life, yet to spare her mother embarrassment, she pushed herself to achieve greatness.

Both were daughters of the Ye Family, so why did the stepsister face no such hardship, inheriting the Ye Group as a matter of course? And then there was Ye Shu – barely two years younger than Mei Chunli’s daughter, yet already designated the Group’s heir. That singular status, unearned by effort, garnered her ten times the deference her own daughter received.

At times, a question would plague Mei Chunli: how could destiny be so inequitable? Merely by being born to a caregiver like herself, must her daughter endure such persistent disdain?

The more Mei Chunli contemplated, the more her emotions swirled into a vortex. Gazing upon her beloved husband’s sleeping visage, a flicker of resentment arose – a resentment towards his perceived partiality. If only he had apportioned some of the Group’s shares to their daughter, how much better would things be?

"Why are you still awake?" Ye Changfeng’s voice was a low grumble. "Lost in those television dramas again? Such things are mere fantasy."

"What television drama?" Mei Chunli blinked, momentarily taken aback.

"Isn’t it that ‘Family Feud’ you’ve been glued to lately? Their performances feel so artificial. How could the elder brother be slain by his sibling, and yet the authorities remain powerless? Wealth does not grant absolute dominion."

A sudden jolt went through Mei Chunli’s heart, as if a hidden chord had been struck. "Isn’t it because that elder patriarch was shielding him? They ultimately never lodged a formal complaint!"

"That’s fiction. Real life operates differently. Go to sleep now, cease these musings." Ye Changfeng shifted and swiftly returned to a profound slumber.

But sleep eluded Mei Chunli entirely. Scenes from ‘Family Feud’ continued to loop in her mind. What if such a scenario were to unfold in reality?

If the stepsister were removed from the picture, and her husband had only their daughter remaining, would he stand by her side protectively?

Mei Chunli’s eyes darted restlessly. Even if he chose not to intervene, what could he accomplish? Xiao Shu was too immature to manage the Group; only her daughter possessed the capability to assist him. Furthermore, the perpetrator would not be her daughter. Once an investigation commenced, all would perceive the event as a mere accident.

Without the stepsister present, her daughter would naturally ascend to lead the company. Her daughter would then be liberated from her relentless toil. Mei Chunli acknowledged that this course of action betrayed the stepsister’s trust, yet she vowed to cherish her granddaughter dearly. She would also ensure her daughter mirrored this affection towards her own granddaughter.

Once this notion took firm hold, the following day, Mei Chunli found herself unable to meet Ye Qiu’s gaze directly, thus subtly sowing seeds of suspicion within Ye Qiu.

Reflecting internally, the timing of the murder in her prior existence was drawing near. Presently, the sole individual exhibiting signs of instability was this very stepmother, Mei Chunli. Yet, the underlying reason remained elusive.

Ye Qiu struggled to comprehend the source of the stepmother’s sudden animosity. From where did she draw such audacious conviction? It seemed Ye Qiu had committed no transgression against her.

Casting a glance at her reborn younger sister, Ye Yun, acquired at a bargain, Ye Qiu detected no anomaly. This only intensified her curiosity, though outwardly she maintained an impassive, composed demeanor, her inner vigilance sharpening.

Ye Yun herself remained oblivious to her mother’s burgeoning, self-serving ambitions. She was diligently preparing for Zhang Beichen’s upcoming graduation ball.

Later that afternoon, Zhang Beichen arrived in his car to escort her, taking her directly to a high-end styling salon.

"Is all this fuss really necessary, going so over-the-top?" Ye Yun quipped playfully.

"Absolutely. Having secured the company of a beauty like Sister Yun, wouldn’t it be a disservice not to adorn you magnificently?" Zhang Beichen opened the car door for Ye Yun with gentle chivalry, followed by a soft chuckle. Clad in a sharp black suit today, he looked exceptionally dashing, causing Ye Yun’s heart to flutter momentarily. She chided herself inwardly – had her prolonged stint of singleness made her susceptible? To nearly develop feelings for her future grand-nephew-in-law!

"Your words are quite smooth. You should aim them at Xiao Shu, not me." She managed to quell the restless feelings within her, maintaining a composed and suitable smile.

A fleeting expression of disappointment crossed Zhang Beichen's face. "But Xiao Shu doesn’t seem to like me at all."

"Then you must put in more effort. Only with persistence can you capture a beauty's heart."

"Then a beauty like Sister Yun must have countless admirers. Why haven't you accepted any of them?"

"My career is my top priority right now. I’m not in the mood for romance."

"Those suitors must be regretting their choices." Zhang Beichen offered another smile. "We have arrived. They will handle your entire styling for you today, Sister Yun. This is the gown I selected for you—have a look and see if you like it. If not, we have alternatives. All of them are new this season."

Ye Yun raised her eyes. It was a silver evening gown, and she recognized the designer label immediately. The price tag was in the high six figures. While the front appeared quite modest, the back was completely open, adorned only with a row of tassels. She could already envision how stunning she would look stepping out in it.

It captivated her from the first glance. She hadn't anticipated Zhang Beichen possessing such refined taste.

"Miss Ye, please try on the gown first, and then we will proceed with finalizing your makeup."

"Certainly."

Ye Yun had to admit she had misjudged. The front of the dress was far from ordinary; due to the special fabric used, it shimmered with every movement, accentuating her figure perfectly. She even noticed a flicker of astonishment in Zhang Beichen's gaze.

"I didn't expect the gown you chose for Xiao Shu to fit me so well too," she remarked with a light laugh.

"No." The sparkle in Zhang Beichen's eyes remained undimmed, his ears flushed, and his voice lacked its usual steadiness. "This isn't the dress I selected for Xiao Shu. I only chose this after Sister Yun agreed to accompany me to the event."

"Is that so? It’s absolutely stunning, I adore it. Thank you." Ye Yun smiled, her features radiating charm.

Zhang Beichen's Adam's apple bobbed. Feeling it was impolite to stare, he averted his gaze and murmured, "It suits you wonderfully."

The gown was exquisite, so naturally, the makeup had to be equally flawless. This private styling studio commanded a substantial fee, but their expertise certainly validated every penny. By the time Ye Yun's transformation was complete, Zheng Beichen was utterly captivated.

Ye Yun chuckled again. "What is it, have you lost your heart to your big sister here?"

Zhang Beichen nodded earnestly. "Yes, I have."

Ye Yun paused, suddenly speechless and feeling a touch of awkwardness.

Fortunately, Zhang Beichen's thoughtful nature shone through. He swiftly regained his composure and, like a true gentleman, opened the car door for her, carefully arranged her skirt, and thoughtfully provided a cup of water with a straw for her convenience.
