Quick Transmigration: Drama Queen's Daily Life Chapter 1146 - 1135: Favoring Daughters Over Sons
Previously on Quick Transmigration: Drama Queen's Daily Life...
The four elders had never intended for their granddaughter to become their caretaker in their twilight years. They had doted on the child purely out of love, expecting nothing in return but her happiness and occasional visits.
Yet, upon hearing Ye Qing’s words, a chill permeated their hearts. After almost thirty years of pampering, had she truly viewed their affection as nothing more than a financial resource?
Observing their daughter-in-law and grandson growing distant, they, much like Han Hui and Ye Peilin previously, began to question if their indulgence had been excessive, if their favoritism had blinded them.
Now, in their advanced age, only their son offered occasional concern. Their daughter-in-law and grandson, with whom they shared meals daily, felt like strangers, never initiating conversation and showing more warmth to other elders than to them. Had they truly misstepped in the past?
With even their remaining pension funds taken by their granddaughter, they endured their daughter-in-law’s icy glares, silenced by the knowledge that when they could no longer manage independently, they would still be reliant on this very daughter-in-law and grandson who had shown them little care.
After a lifetime of material abundance, the stark truth finally dawned: their bias was a grave error. But what could be done now? How could they possibly compensate for the neglected affection? The individuals involved had grown, and those who were once overlooked no longer required their attention.
In that moment, their thoughts turned to Ye Qiu, the most exceptional among their grandchildren. A sudden realization struck them: Ye Qiu had endured the most hardship over the years.
In the past, any form of favor flowed to Ye Qing, while Ye Qiu was invariably blamed for any missteps. As the eldest, everyone naturally assumed the youngest was indulged, so they deliberately refrained from showing him undue preference.
And the outcome? He bore the brunt of it all; no matter what he said, he was met with disagreement. At the time, he was perceived as the most disobedient, the most rebellious, destined for the least promising future.
Yet, the reality was that he had become the most outstanding amongst them, defying all expectations. They now understood, with profound clarity, that their childish stubbornness had even led them to miss his wedding.
This was an act committed by them, the so-called adults. They would surely be a subject of ridicule if their coercion of their grandson to break up with his girlfriend, fueled by nonsensical words, and their refusal to attend his wedding otherwise, were known. How absurd their actions were, yet these supposedly wise adults had indeed acted so.
Granny Ye, her hands trembling, dialed Ye Qiu’s number. Tears of regret blurred her vision as they streamed down her face. She acknowledged she had not been a good grandmother and now, her sole desire was to hear her grandson’s voice.
"Hello, is that grandma?" Ye Qiu’s composed voice responded from the other end, "What is it?"
Granny Ye’s voice wavered with emotion, "It’s me, Grandma. Are you doing well in Jing City?"
Ye Qiu paused briefly before answering, "Pretty well."
"Is that so? That’s good. And your wife and child?"
"They’re okay as well."
Granny Ye let out a tearful chuckle, "Grandma was unfair to you before. Can you forgive Grandma?"
A moment of silence followed before Ye Qiu’s reply, tinged with emotional distance, came through, "You are my elder, and it is not for the younger generation to hold grudges."
Hearing these words, Granny Ye understood that her grandson had indeed grown apart from them. Their years of biased treatment had inevitably created an emotional chasm. Moments before, she had longed to ask about Ye Qiu’s child, but as the words formed on her lips, she realized with shame that she didn’t even know her great-grandchild’s name, making further inquiry feel impossible.
"When will you have time to visit? Your grandpa and I miss you very much." She quickly added, with caution, "We know young people are busy with work, so it’s perfectly fine if you can’t make it back."
"My mother-in-law and father-in-law are planning to return next month to manage some matters. We might come back together with them."
"Your in-laws are with you?"
"Yes, Xianxian and I are quite busy with our work, so they resigned to assist us with Lin Lin."
"Oh, I see. That’s wonderful." Granny Ye held onto his words, finally learning her great-grandson’s name: Lin Lin. When they return next month, she resolved, she would prepare a gift for the child.
Then, the realization struck her: all the savings accumulated over the years, including her cherished old jewelry and treasures, had been pilfered by their granddaughter, Ye Qing.
A deep sigh escaped her lips. She offered a bitter, regretful smile, lamenting her past bias.
"What happened? Just now, you mentioned it was your grandma calling. Did something happen?" He Xixian inquired of Ye Qiu. She couldn’t be faulted for this line of questioning, as throughout the years, Ye Qiu had always been the one to initiate contact, never receiving calls. Therefore, Granny Ye’s call was indeed quite unexpected.
"Perhaps she regrets it now!" Ye Qing remarked with an indifferent tone.
"Regrets what?"
"Regrets being excessively partial to Ye Qing back then, and now wishes to compensate me." Ye Qiu jested with his son, his face revealing no other emotion.
Nevertheless, He Xixian cast a worried glance at her husband: "Are you alright?"
"What could possibly be wrong?" Ye Qiu let out a light chuckle, "I've long since accepted it. If they wish to reconcile, that is their prerogative. I haven't required it for a considerable time."
He Xixian furrowed her brows: "After such prolonged bias for decades, why the sudden desire to make amends?"
"It's hardly surprising; Ye Qing must have disappointed them, revealing her true colors." Ye Qiu shook his head, "I've always maintained that those harmonious periods were largely due to me being under duress, or during the years Ye Qing was away. Now that she's returned with her husband, relying on them, and given their inherent indolence, I doubt anyone could tolerate it indefinitely."
"So, what will be your course of action?"
"We shall do what is necessary, accompany Mom and Dad through their matters, and then we will depart."
"Very well," He Xixian exhaled in relief. While she was not unfilial, she felt a deep sense of unease around her husband's relatives. After all, they had once compelled Ye Qiu to end their relationship under duress. Though they might now harbor guilt towards him, regarding her, who could say if they still deemed her unworthy of their accomplished grandson?
It was two days later that Ye Peilin and Han Hui learned of Ye Qiu’s impending return, a full month after the initial news. During these intervening days, Ye Qing’s relocation and the subsequent discontent from Han Hui’s sister-in-law and Ye Peilin’s siblings had utterly drained their mental fortitude. The couple appeared to have aged several years within a mere two-year span, their hair streaked with grey, leaving them no time for even basic grooming.
"He's returning next month?" Han Hui felt a pang of uncertainty, unsure of how to approach the reunion. Having dedicated so much effort to her daughter’s happiness, she now finally grasped the underlying reasons for her son’s previously strong convictions.
She couldn't fathom how her son had managed to maintain his academic pursuits under such adverse conditions, and within a household where his potential was universally doubted, the depth of his suffering must have been immense.
