Quick Transmigration: Drama Queen's Daily Life Chapter 1114 - 1103: Favoring Daughters Over Sons
Previously on Quick Transmigration: Drama Queen's Daily Life...
The entire summer saw Ye Qing relentlessly bothering Ye Qiu. Her demands were endless, and any dissatisfaction on her part was met with blame directed at Ye Qiu by Ye Peilin and Han Hui, as if he were some unwanted stray.
Perhaps sensing the deepening frostiness in Ye Qiu's demeanor, Han Hui decided to have a talk with him one day. With a saccharine smile, she took his hand and coaxed him to sit. Feeling an inexplicable unease, Ye Qiu shifted to a nearby chair.
Han Hui let out a sigh. "Are you harboring resentment towards Dad, Mom, and your sister?"
"No," Ye Qiu responded curtly.
"Even if you don't voice it, your mother can sense it. I understand you're hurt by your father and mother's clear favoritism towards your sister, but she is your biological sister, after all. Do you realize that without her agreement back then, you might not even be here?"
This was the same worn-out argument, and Ye Qiu found himself entirely uninterested in engaging.
"Your sister is a girl, and you are a boy. Girls are typically more delicate and sensitive than boys, so your father and I naturally tend to dote on her a bit more. Besides, your sister will eventually marry and leave, and life for women can be quite challenging. We simply want to cherish her more while she's still under our roof."
Noticing Ye Qiu's head bowed in silence, Han Hui mistakenly believed her words were resonating. She continued her gentle persuasion, "Xiaoqiu, Dad and Mom love you just as much. You are both our children; how could we possibly be biased? This home will, in the end, be yours, and you will be the one spending your days by our side. You'll understand when you grow older – blood relatives are the closest bonds one has. Your sister is the person who will stay with you the longest in this world."
Ye Qiu mused that while siblings might indeed share the closest bonds in some families, theirs was certainly not one of them.
Furthermore, nothing in this household was ever truly his, nor did he crave such possessions. What he truly wished to avoid was being ensnared by these platitudes. In his previous existence, Ye Qing had undoubtedly reaped the greatest benefits from this family. He had given so much, only for it to somehow be twisted into Ye Qing deserving pity simply because she was a woman who married out?
"I don't want it."
"What?" Han Hui asked, her brow furrowed in confusion at her son's pronouncement.
"I mean I don't want anything from this house. I have my own hands and my own feet; I will carve out my own destiny," Ye Qiu declared with profound seriousness, each word deliberate.
Yet, Han Hui dismissed his statement with a laugh. "You're still so young, what do you know? Finding decent employment is incredibly difficult in today's society; some university graduates can't even afford a place to rent once they enter the workforce!"
"Regardless, if you all wish to bestow everything upon my sister, it's fine by me. I won't accept it."
"Hearing you say that tells me you still care about your sister. Why then do you maintain such a cold facade usually? Your sister truly cares about you; you have no idea how downcast she's been these past few days because you've been giving her the silent treatment."
Ye Qiu suddenly understood the reason behind his mother's uncharacteristic conversation. It turned out Ye Qing had, once again, lodged a complaint. He hadn't been talking to her? How was he supposed to converse with her – by acting as her subservient attendant, fulfilling every one of her unreasonable demands, merely to validate his status as her brother?
"Your sister is returning to her university next week. Make sure to spend some quality time with her during these remaining days. She mentioned going out with friends tomorrow; don't cause her any distress."
Ye Qiu inwardly rolled his eyes. Ye Qing's university was located right in the city, and she returned almost every weekend. Why the pretense of her embarking on a distant journey?
At the very least, it meant he would only have to endure seeing her once a week. Ye Qiu resolved to just hold on until his entrance examinations concluded, after which he would finally spread his wings and soar freely, never again to heed her dictates.
"Your brother is so handsome!"
"And so obedient, carrying all your belongings without a single complaint."
"Exactly! Unlike my brother, who always has some excuse when asked to do anything."
"We're so envious of you, Ye Qing!"
Overhearing her classmates' discussions about Ye Qiu and their subsequent envy, Ye Qing offered a demure smile. "Oh, it's nothing. We're close siblings, after all. Isn't it only natural for him to help me with things?"
"That's true before marriage, but just wait until your brother ties the knot; he'll only have eyes for his wife then."
"Precisely! Men are like that. Before marriage, sisters are precious gems, but after marriage, they become practically insignificant. Not only will you have to refrain from being jealous, but you'll also be expected to spend your own money to buy gifts for your sister-in-law and your nephews."
At this, Ye Qing's brow furrowed deeply. "I am his sister; he wouldn't dare disregard my wishes."
"That's not how it works. They say a man forgets his mother once he's married, let alone his sister."
"Indeed. Didn't my brother used to give me pocket money before he got married? Now, after marriage, I have to seek permission from my sister-in-law before he'll even pay my phone bill!"
"You should make the most of these years before your brother gets married!"
"No, no, it's more accurate to say before he starts dating. Once he has a girlfriend, he'll only be concerned with carrying her bag."
Amidst the laughter and chatter of her classmates, Ye Qing found herself growing uneasy. Her very existence, she felt, was the reason her brother, Ye Qiu, was in this world. Their parents had always declared them the closest souls on earth. How then, could Ye Qiu possibly disregard her for some outsider?
Such a scenario was utterly unacceptable to her. Henceforth, any girlfriend Ye Qiu chose would require her explicit approval. She vowed to meticulously assess the character of any potential partner. Should anyone dare to sow discord between Ye Qiu and herself, they would face her absolute rejection.
However, a nagging feeling persisted that her brother's closeness to her was waning. How would she manage such matters in the future? Perhaps as an outlet for her burgeoning frustration, her demands upon Ye Qiu grew increasingly stringent.
"I desire some water," she declared towards Ye Qiu, her tone laced with displeasure.
"Here you go," Ye Qiu responded, extending the cup to her.
"I don't want hot water; it's sweltering today. Go fetch me some ice water."
A slight frown creased Ye Qiu’s brow. "Just before we departed, you mentioned feeling unwell in your stomach and specifically requested warm water."
"I feel even hotter now and crave ice water."
Ye Qiu clenched his jaw. "We're already halfway up the mountain. Water is only sold either at the summit or at the base. Where am I supposed to procure it?"
"Descend the mountain and buy it for me. I shall wait here."
Her companions, unable to bear witness any longer, began to interject with gentle advice. "Ye Qing, why not just drink this for now until we reach the top?"
"Indeed! We've trekked for nearly an hour to reach this point; it would be utterly exhausting for your brother to go all the way back down now!"
"He's a boy, robust and healthy. A quick jog down would be nothing, and it would serve as a good workout," Ye Qing retorted. The others, finding no further ground for persuasion and exchanging knowing glances, ultimately relented. After all, it was a family affair.
Observing that Ye Qing remained resolute and fearing she might escalate the situation, Ye Qiu sighed inwardly. Her pride was paramount, and if he denied her face today, who knew what repercussions awaited them upon their return. Taking a deep breath, he conceded, "Await me here."
As he obediently began his descent to fetch the water, a sliver of triumph flickered across Ye Qing's face. She knew he would never refuse her requests.
The other companions, witnessing his compliance and seeing that the situation was resolved, offered words of praise. "Your brother truly listens to you."
"Yes, if it were my brother, he would have undoubtedly told me to put up with it, perhaps even scolded me quite severely."
Ye Qing responded with a contented laugh, her reply naturally delivered, "He is my brother!"
