Chen Yan attends a party with Angie, observing her low social status and the casual disregard for underage drinking. The party's atmosphere shifts as more adults arrive, and Chen Yan spots a familiar drug dealer completing a transaction with a wealthy classmate. The host, Frank, intervenes, warning the classmate not to cause trouble, but the classmate tempts Frank with the high-quality drugs.

Obviously, this guy has definitely played with that stuff before—one of the countries where D-products are the most rampant, living up to its reputation.

"Not today." Frank let out a breath. He was still somewhat rational, and lowered his voice: "There are too many kinds of people here today. Media people, plus scouts sent by XX University’s team. I don’t want to leave a bad impression on them. Listen, you behave yourself."

The rich kid chuckled: "Fine, I won’t take it out here. When it’s over, we change locations and do it together."

"...Fine." Frank exhaled in relief and agreed.

"Find a few familiar chicks here, bring them with us when we go."

"Deal." This time Frank’s answer already had a smile in his eyes.

Chen Yan’s hearing was sharp. Even under the deafening music of the party, the conversation between these two didn’t escape his ears.

But this stuff had nothing to do with him.

He just glanced at the two guys’ fate—their lifespans were quite long, not the kind that were supposed to die soon.

Chen Yan, bored, shifted his gaze away and stopped watching.

The party went on for quite a while; in fact it had already passed the one-hour limit that Angie and Chen Yan had agreed on.

But even though Chen Yan urged her several times, Angie just refused to leave.

Even though barely anyone here talked to her, she still didn’t want to go; even if it meant sitting in a corner as a little invisible nobody, she couldn’t bear to leave this "high-level school social circle" that she’d finally managed to enter.

Chen Yan could only stay and keep this girl company.

After all, she was Uncle Wu’s daughter, and before they came, she’d helped him out, solving that hassle with the police wanting to check his ID.

Just treat it as doing a one-time free babysitter job.

The party finally ended after three hours.

Some couples left holding each other; some weren’t couples at all, just people who’d hooked up at the party.

Angie and her little group made four people in total. Besides Angie, there was the school-team player’s girlfriend (but she left with her boyfriend), and then the girl who’d thrown flirty looks at Chen Yan, plus a black guy—not the tall, buff type of black bro, but a skinny black boy who looked kind of nerdy, a bit of a bookworm.

The few of them walked out of the apartment together, went downstairs to the roadside, and Angie shot Chen Yan a look, reminding him with her eyes.

Chen Yan realized the girl was reminding him of their agreement: he was supposed to drive Angie’s friends home as well.

To give Angie a chance to show off: her boyfriend had a car.

Among this group of high schoolers, having a car was something to brag about, but not really as a flex of wealth.

It was bragging about a kind of "adult vibe"—having a car meant being closer to adulthood, more independent and free.

"Wait here a bit, my car’s parked kind of far. I’ll go bring it over."

Chen Yan understood Angie’s look and very tactfully spoke up first.

Angie seemed quite satisfied—the girl was actually a bit tipsy; she clearly didn’t have much tolerance, two big cups of beer at the party had already made her wobble on her feet—and yeah, those cups were pretty big.

"Go, my dear, hurry up. It’s still a little cold tonight." Angie deliberately answered Chen Yan in a sugary voice and even threw him a flirtatious wink, though the way this little girl tried to flirt was kind of hard for Chen Yan to watch.

Chen Yan walked off unhurriedly, heading to the other side of the street corner—his car really was parked a bit far away, since when they arrived, all the curbside spots were already full.

He got in, started the engine, and even took a moment to glance at his phone. No new unread messages—Brother Ni Manny the eunuch probably still wasn’t awake.

But when Chen Yan slowly drove back to the front of the apartment building, his expression wasn’t quite right.

He rolled down the window and looked at the people standing by the road.

The people were wrong.

Originally the ones waiting for him here were two girls and a guy, but now the only one at the curb was that nerdy black boy.

Angie and the girl who’d been throwing him flirty glances were gone.

"Where’d they go?" Chen Yan frowned at the black boy.

The black boy made a classic American shrug-and-spread-hands gesture: "They left with Murray."

"What?"

"Murray just drove over, parked by the road, and suddenly asked if we wanted to go with him to the next scene, said it’d be more exciting. Mary got in the car, then Mary told Angie to go with her, so Angie went too. She told me to stay here and wait for you, and tell you."

Murray?

That rich kid from the party?

"Fuck!" Chen Yan cursed. "Which way did Murray’s car go?"

The black boy pointed in a direction: "That way, drove straight off."

"What car?"

"A blue BMW."

Chen Yan didn’t say anything else. He floored the gas, and the car shot forward.

The black boy watched Chen Yan’s car disappear into the distance, staring for a few seconds before muttering to himself.

"I knew it. Once the girls left, he wasn’t gonna drive me home... Fuck, there’s no subway around here."

Chen Yan chased in the car for less than three minutes, then turned around and came back.

Simple: he hadn’t caught up. More precisely, he hadn’t found them.

This is New York City, the biggest city in M Country. The roads are like a dense web; once you drive out, it’s nothing but forked intersections.

Who the hell knew which road that so-called blue BMW sedan had turned onto!

If he were still that Third Realm Cultivator, with spells he could use at will, finding that car wouldn’t be hard; whether using a Spell or Talisman Art, he had plenty of methods.
