A mysterious family of four enters a residential area, their strange demeanor noticed by a security guard. Later that night, the security guard and his partner hear a crash and discover a body. They then see the young girl from the family calmly leaving with a younger boy, seemingly unfazed by the horrific scene. Meanwhile, Chen Yan awakens after being subjected to a powerful technique and discovers Lu Sisi is missing, only to receive a call from the police.

Chapter 377 [Talk!]

An hour later, Chen Yan gave a statement at the district sub-bureau police station.

The police registered Chen Yan’s name, identity, and his relationship with Lu Sisi, and asked some related questions.

Chen Yan’s face looked absolutely awful, but the police didn’t find that reaction strange.

Any normal person, faced with something like this, would react that way.

Lu Xiuting and Yang Jiaming were dead.

They jumped from a building.

The police’s preliminary judgment was suicide.

The case also looked simple: the police questioned the security guards of the compound and got statements that they had personally seen this family of four return home at night, enter the compound, and that no suspicious person accompanied them.

With no outsiders or strangers around them, the possibility of coercion could preliminarily be ruled out.

The surveillance cameras in the compound and the stairwell also corroborated this.

Then, at eleven that night, Yang Jiaming and Lu Xiuting jumped one after another from their own balcony and fell to their deaths.

The home had been examined; it was confirmed they jumped from the balcony, and there were no signs of fighting or struggling in the house.

Both of their phones were checked as well; there were no suspicious call records or message exchanges.

After the couple jumped, surveillance showed Lu Sisi taking her little brother and leaving, going downstairs and then out of the compound—this was also confirmed by the security guard who witnessed it.

In addition, the police casually looked into Chen Yan. After confirming that at the time of the incident Chen Yan had been at his own home, then, upon being notified by the police, left his place and went to the station—the police pulled the surveillance from the large flat where Chen Yan lived to confirm this, and then excluded the possibility of Chen Yan being involved in the case.

In the eyes of the police, he was basically just an innocent, unlucky guy whose girlfriend’s family had suffered a tragedy.

Piecing together the various statements and bits of information, the police more or less had a working hypothesis.

The relationship between Yang Jiaming and Lu Xiuting was extremely bad; as a husband, Yang Jiaming was having an affair, and the couple’s relationship was vicious.

On the very day of the incident, the two had even brawled in a restaurant, causing a huge scene; the police visited the restaurant and obtained statements from the staff as well as the restaurant’s surveillance footage.

Their feelings had broken down, the marriage was on the verge of collapse, and there were major conflicts between them.

And then, the couple jumped off the building one after the other?

This struck the officers handling the case as both reasonable and absurd.

Reasonable in that: there were huge emotional disputes and conflicts, and then, under extreme emotions, people choosing to end their own lives is a kind of logic one can infer.

Absurd in that... why would the couple jump together? The man clearly had a mistress—if anyone was going to die, it shouldn’t be him.

You could argue that a woman, betrayed by her husband and driven to despair by a broken relationship, might choose to end her life. That’s still plausible.

So why did the man jump?

He had money, a company, and a young, pretty mistress kept outside. What he should have been thinking about was shaking off his wife and starting his new life.

So why would he jump to his death?

But then again, it’s hard to say; when people’s emotions flare up, they’re capable of doing anything. If the fight got too heated, sharp words flying back and forth, and one thing led to another in the heat of the moment...

"How much do you know about your girlfriend’s family situation?"

Of the two officers questioning Chen Yan, the older one asked while carefully watching Chen Yan’s eyes.

Chen Yan thought for a moment and said, "Her relationship with her family isn’t very good. She hasn’t really been loved by her parents since she was little."

"Why?", the older officer pressed, "Normally, with such a pretty girl, if her personality’s decent..."

"Maybe it’s because they value sons over daughters, maybe because of other reasons." Chen Yan gave a vague answer.

Favoring sons over daughters, huh? That was possible. The officer nodded.

An adult elder daughter, and a little son who was only ten.

That fit the pattern of a son-favoring family.

"Then what about the relationship between Yang Jiaming and Lu Xiuting? How much do you know?"

"I’ve heard it wasn’t good," Chen Yan answered. "Apparently, Yang Jiaming was having an affair."

"How did you find out?"

Chen Yan sighed. "Lu Xiuting came to my place to cry to Lu Sisi, so I found out. My girlfriend later told me some things as well. But I don’t know the very specific details."

He paused, then added a few bits of information he "should" know; if he didn’t say them, the police would dig them up anyway, so he might as well take the initiative.

"Lu Xiuting’s health hasn’t been great. She was hospitalized with a serious illness before, but she recovered and was discharged. I went to visit her in the hospital, and, um... at that time she was already fighting with my girlfriend’s father over divorce."

"Anything else to add?"

"Also, last month their whole family went to Port City, to the Yang Family to pay respects for an elder’s birthday. I later went to Port City to pick up my girlfriend, and we also spent a few days there having fun."

The older officer fell silent, picked up a file in his hand and looked it over—looked at it twice, then looked at Chen Yan, then back at the file.

Suddenly, he asked out of nowhere, "You used to live in the XX compound, that’s a villa, right? Is it yours?"

"Mm, it’s mine."

"And now you’ve moved to another compound? On XX Street, that’s a large flat, right? Also yours?"

"Yes, that’s mine too."

"What do you do for a living? So young, and you already have both a villa and a large flat?" The old officer squinted at Chen Yan with a smile as he asked.

Chen Yan answered calmly, "I work as an Instructor at Yunzong Academy."

"What academy?" The officer frowned.

"An academy that does traditional culture—Zen Cultivator practices, meditation and such."
