Power of Runes Chapter 519: A Foolish Love
Previously on Power of Runes...
Within the Soul Space, the black light surrounding Eric had already faded away, leaving his newly evolved body floating silently in the air while Eva stood nearby, still finding it difficult to believe that the creature before her was the same little brother she had known all this time.
The change brought by his Evolution was simply too great, not only transforming his appearance completely but even turning him into a member of a race that should no longer exist anywhere across the Infinite Dimensions.
As Eva continued looking at him, Eric’s pitch-black eyes finally opened, the countless tiny stars within them slowly drifting through the endless darkness as his gaze wandered around for a moment before eventually settling on his sister.
Before Eva could say anything, Eric’s enormous body was suddenly covered by a faint light as his figure began to shrink and change, gradually losing the form of a unicorn until a familiar human figure emerged in its place.
However, the transformation wasn’t completely perfect.
The midnight-black fur, silver-black mane, and other features of his Royal Unicorn form had disappeared, but the horn growing from his forehead remained exactly where it was just smaller in size, standing out so clearly that Eva immediately noticed it.
Eric looked down at himself for a moment, moving his arms and stretching his body slightly as though getting used to his human form again, before finally looking toward Eva with a smile.
"Sister, you have been staring at me ever since I woke up. Did my Evolution really change me that much?"
"You have no idea."
Eva replied while looking him up and down once again, still finding it strange to connect the person standing before her with the creature she had seen only moments ago.
"Congratulations on completing your Evolution, little brother. Although I have to admit, you gave me quite a shock this time."
"Haha, thank you, Sister. I wasn’t expecting the Evolution to take a turn in such direction as well, and waking up to find you staring at me like that certainly wasn’t what I expected."
"After seeing what you have evolved into, I think my reaction was perfectly normal, and if Ash were here right now, I doubt his reaction would be much different."
Eric chuckled at her words, while Eva finally relaxed a little after seeing that his personality hadn’t changed alongside his race, because with how drastic the Evolution had been, she wouldn’t have been surprised if there had been some changes in that regard as well.
Eva was not wrong, there were indeed some changes but they have yet to manifest fully.
After exchanging a few more casual words with him, Eva’s attention once again returned to the horn on his forehead, and after staring at it for several seconds, she finally raised her hand and pointed toward it.
"By the way, can you not hide your horn after transforming into a human? Everything else changed properly, but that thing is still sitting on your forehead. It might raise suspicions if a horn appear on someone’s head who did not have it before. We might even have to change our location."
"I tried."
Eric reached up and touched the horn before shaking his head with a helpless smile.
"It doesn’t work. I can transform the rest of my body without any problem, but no matter what I do, my body refuses to hide the horn, so unless something changes later, I think I’ll have to keep it even while I’m in human form."
Eva stared at the horn for a moment before a realization dawned upon her after hearing those words.
The Royal Unicorn lineage was simply too domineering.
Even when Eric transformed into another form, his lineage refused to allow its most defining feature to disappear completely, as though becoming something else was acceptable, but completely hiding what he truly was wasn’t.
"Well, I suppose we’ll have to deal with that later, but there’s something much more important I want to ask you right now."
Eva’s expression became slightly more serious as she looked directly at him.
"Do you know what you’ve evolved into?"
Eric didn’t answer immediately, but the smile on his face made the answer obvious even before he finally nodded.
"Yes, I know. I received new set of Bloodline memories after the Evolution was completed, and I’m actually quite happy with what I’ve become."
Eva looked at him strangely for a moment before asking, "You do understand what being a Royal Unicorn means, right? If the information I saw is accurate, The entire Royal race was hunted to extinction across the Infinite Dimensions, and if those same beings ever discover that a Royal Unicorn exists again, I doubt they’ll simply ignore you."
"I know that too."
Eric’s smile didn’t disappear as he spoke, and instead there was a strange excitement hidden within his expression that made Eva narrow her eyes.
"I know there could be countless dangers waiting for me if my existence is discovered, and I know the same beings that destroyed the Royal Unicorns might come after me as well, but for some reason, whenever I think about them coming to kill me..."
Eric paused for a moment, seemingly trying to understand the strange feeling himself before his smile widened slightly.
"...I don’t know why, but I feel like jumping at every single one of them who comes after me."
Eva stared at him silently for several seconds, wondering whether she should be concerned about what she had just heard or simply accept that this was another consequence of spending far too much time around Ash.
In the end, a helpless sigh escaped her lips as she shook her head.
"Of course you do. At this point, I don’t even know why I expected a normal answer from you."
Eric only laughed at her response, clearly having no intention of worrying about enemies who hadn’t even appeared yet, while Eva could only hope that when the day finally came for those dangers to reach him, he would be strong enough to face them exactly as confidently as he wanted to now.
The two continued talking for a while longer, mostly about Eric’s Evolution and the changes he could already feel within himself, before their conversation eventually moved away from his new race and toward what he planned to do from this point onward.
"So, what do you want to do now?"
Eva asked curiously.
"I want to become stronger."
Eric answered without needing much time to think, and although the answer itself wasn’t surprising, what followed immediately caught Eva’s attention.
"For that, I need to go outside and travel around the Realm instead of staying in one place all the time. I want to face different dangers, experience things I’ve never encountered before, and most importantly, I want to visit those Death Zones scattered throughout the Realm."
Eva immediately understood what he was planning.
Death Zones were places where merely surviving was difficult, with some possessing environments dangerous enough to kill even Demi Gods and Gods before they could even venture deep inside, yet for Eric, whose ’Perfect Adaptability ’allowed him to gradually adapt to the things he experienced and survived, such places were practically perfect for his growth.
"I want to experience all of them myself, Sister. The extreme environments, the dangers within them, and whatever else those places can throw at me, because if my new power truly works the way the information says it does, then staying somewhere safe would only waste what I have."
Eric seemed genuinely excited as he spoke, and Eva could understand why, because unlike most people who became stronger by avoiding dangers beyond what they could handle, Eric now possessed a power that could turn the dangers he survived into something that made him even harder to kill the next time.
"Well, I don’t have any reason to stop you, and I doubt you would listen even if I tried."
"Of course, but before I go..."
Eric’s expression softened slightly as another person came to mind.
"I want to meet Saskia once and explain some things to her."
Eva blinked upon hearing the name, and after looking at Eric for a few moments, the curiosity she had kept to herself for quite some time finally surfaced.
"Are you actually serious about Saskia?"
Eric looked at her without answering immediately, while Eva continued before he could avoid the question.
"I know the two of you have been close for some time, but do you really trust her enough to love her?"
For the first time since their conversation began, Eric fell silent.
He remained quiet for a moment as he thought about her question, yet instead of giving Eva the confident answer she expected, a foolish smile slowly appeared on his face.
"I don’t know."
Eva stared at him, but Eric simply continued smiling as he added in a much lighter voice.
"If she ever turns her back on me and betrays me, then I just hope my Adaptability can mend those wounds as well."
Before Eva could even decide how to respond to that answer, Eric turned around and disappeared from the Soul Space.
Eva’s eyes widened instantly.
For several seconds, she simply stared at the empty place where Eric had been standing, because what had just happened should have been impossible.
No one could freely enter or leave Ash’s Soul Space without permission, and with Ash currently absent, that authority naturally belonged to Eva, yet Eric went away just like that, without waiting for her approval, and without her even sensing what he was about to do.
"...He left?"
Eva immediately checked again, only to confirm that Eric had truly disappeared from the Soul Space and returned outside entirely on his own before teleporting away.
For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.
Then the information she had read about the Royal Unicorns returned to her mind, especially the fact that their Perfect Adaptability could eventually allow even the Laws of Reality to lose their ability to restrain them.
Eric had only just completed his Evolution.
Yet somehow, the restrictions of the Soul Space were already unable to completely hold him.
"...I was still underestimating it."
Eva muttered as she looked at the place where Eric had disappeared, finally realizing that she had still been treating the Royal Unicorn lineage as merely an absurdly powerful race with limitless potential.
Perhaps she should have expected something like this from a lineage loved by the damned Infinite Dimension itself.
