After a brief chat with Elder Liu and Chen Tianmin at the DAOist temple, Chen Yang prepared to depart. As he exited, a familiar sight greeted him: He Xiran, returning from the nearby mountains with her pet, Xiaohua. The dog's noticeably swollen belly suggested a bountiful morning foraging among the mountain's creatures.
"Chen Yang!" He Xiran's cheerful voice called out. Spotting him, she waved enthusiastically.
"Chen Yang, are you free today? Let's head to the market! It feels like ages since I last went out," she proposed, approaching with a bright smile. He Xiran, having thoroughly explored the vicinity of Liuhe Village, found herself restless and bored. Her previous requests for a market trip had been met with Chen Yang's concerns about safety, leading him to refuse. Now, she had seized another opportunity.
"Not much is happening today, but the outside situation is quite tense. It's best not to go out and stir up trouble," Chen Yang advised.
His refusal immediately cast a shadow over He Xiran's face. "Chen Yang! You're going back on your word! You promised to take me out after half a month, and today marks exactly half a month, doesn't it?" she pouted.
Chen Yang found her reaction amusing. "It is indeed half a month, but we have to consider the circumstances. If something were to happen, it would be far too risky," he explained, shrugging.
"Oh, it couldn't be that coincidental! It's been half a month. If we're careful, nothing bad will happen, please just take me!" He Xiran pleaded, taking Chen Yang's hand and shaking it playfully, feigning innocence.
Realizing he couldn't dissuade her, Chen Yang reluctantly agreed. "Alright, but once we're out, you must listen to me. If anything seems amiss, we leave immediately," he cautioned.
"Sure, no problem!" He Xiran readily agreed, overjoyed at the prospect of finally going out.
Chen Yang sighed, unable to do anything but comply. He led her from the temple, retrieved their vehicle from the clinic, and they set off towards the town.
The town was unusually lively today, abuzz with vendors and a constant flow of people engaged in market activities.
He Xiran, who seemed to have been cooped up for a considerable time, wore an expression of pure delight as they entered the bustling streets. "It's so vibrant! Chen Yang, it really has been too long since I went out, I felt like I was suffocating," she exclaimed, tugging Chen Yang along into the throng.
"Enjoy the stroll. This might be our last chance for a while," Chen Yang quipped.
He Xiran's smile faltered slightly at his remark, but she chose not to dwell on it, continuing to pull Chen Yang along as they shopped.
He Xiran had a particular fondness for clothing, and naturally, they spent most of their time browsing the apparel shops. Despite the town's offerings being somewhat dated and lacking in trendy styles, He Xiran browsed with genuine enthusiasm.
"Oh my, miss, you are truly beautiful! Anything you wear looks exquisite. This outfit is perfect for you, you must take it!"
"Miss, the reputation of my establishment is unmatched in this town, and the price will be very reasonable for you."
...
The shopkeepers in town were predominantly middle-aged women, all possessing a remarkable gift for salesmanship. Their persuasive words and flattery were impossible for He Xiran to resist, and she ended up purchasing quite a number of items. What's more, she skillfully avoided carrying any of her purchases herself, leaving the task to Chen Yang.
Observing his arms laden with bags, Chen Yang couldn't help but feel a sense of resignation. Women, he mused, were all the same. Even the path of Cultivation couldn't diminish their innate love for shopping.
After wandering for two to three hours, nearing midday, Chen Yang suggested, "Xiran, it's getting late. We should head back."
Having accompanied her for several hours, Chen Yang was feeling rather fatigued. He Xiran, however, seemed as energetic as ever, clearly not having had her fill of fun.
"Chen Yang, we finally managed to get out, don't be like this," He Xiran cajoled sweetly, attempting to persuade him.
Chen Yang had kept a watchful eye on the market throughout their outing, and hadn't noticed any suspicious individuals, indicating that the town remained relatively secure.
"But it's already noon. If we don't head back, what will we eat?" Chen Yang asked with a smile.
"Let's just find somewhere to eat in town, we can dine out," He Xiran replied.
Chen Yang found this amusing. The town didn't offer many dining options, mostly small eateries. Just as he was about to respond, his phone vibrated in his pocket.
He pulled it out to see an incoming call from Niu Ming. "Niu Ming? Why is he calling me all of a sudden?" he wondered. Niu Ming had been living a blissful married life since his wedding, making Chen Yang somewhat surprised by the call.
"Let me take this call first," Chen Yang announced, swiping the screen to answer. "Hello, Niu Ming, what's up?"
"Yang Zi, where have you been? I have a business proposal that requires your partnership. Could you come over for a discussion?"
Niu Ming's jovial tone echoed from the other end of the line.
"Business?"
"Indeed, a venture brimming with profit! I believe it will pique your interest. Why don't you come over and we can hash out the details? We could even grab some lunch. It’s been too long since we last shared a drink, my friend," Niu Ming chuckled heartily.
Upon hearing the word 'business,' Chen Yang found his enthusiasm waning slightly.
