Everyone inside the command tent looked at Marquise Marco in utmost horror while wondering what he would do next. His face had already turned pale and his body was still trembling, so many expected him to break down and beg for mercy.
However, the very next moment, something happened that no one had expected.
"Hahahahaha!"
Marquise Marco suddenly burst into loud laughter.
The wild laughter echoed throughout the entire tent and startled everyone present.
"Hahaha!"
"So it has finally come to this."
He slowly shook his head while wiping away tears that had gathered in the corners of his eyes. Instead of fear, a strange expression of pity appeared on his face as he looked around at every noble standing before him.
"You all don't know where you are heading."
His voice carried a strange calmness.
"This Empire is doomed."
The words immediately caused deep frowns to appear on the faces of the surrounding nobles. Many instinctively glanced at one another while silently wondering what he meant.
Crown Prince Haster merely smiled.
He folded his hands behind his back and calmly asked, "Oh? So you think we are going to lose this war?"
Marco looked toward him and laughed once again.
"Who knows?"
"The war doesn't matter anymore."
His smile slowly widened.
"The moment you joined hands with them..."
"Every single one of you became doomed."
"You will understand once you discover what they are doi..."
SWISH!
Before he could finish speaking, a sword flashed across the air with unbelievable speed.
So fast that almost nobody inside the tent managed to follow it with their eyes.
PFFT!
The sharp blade pierced straight through Marco's throat.
His unfinished words came to an abrupt stop.
Blood slowly dripped down the shining steel while his eyes widened in disbelief.
Only after that did everyone notice another figure standing before him.
It was the Transcendent Knight.
His expression remained completely indifferent.
Without showing any emotion, he slowly withdrew the sword before speaking in a calm voice.
"I have disposed of the traitor."
He looked around at everyone gathered inside the tent.
"He wanted to sow seeds of distrust before dying and tear apart the harmony within our ranks."
"So I discarded him swiftly before he could speak any more nonsense."
Silence filled the tent. Not a single person dared question his actions.
Crown Prince Haster slowly nodded.
"You did well."
His gaze briefly rested on Marco's lifeless body before shifting back toward the nobles.
"Who knows what this heinous man intended to reveal before his death."
His expression became serious.
"Everyone here should understand the consequences of betraying the Empire."
"I wonder what kind of temptation he was offered. But never believe that such people will keep their promises."
He slowly walked across the tent while speaking.
"In a war of this scale, traitors are nothing more than expendable pawns."
"Once they lose their value, they are discarded."
"They will not be respected."
"They will not be rewarded."
"Their treatment will be worse than that of slaves."
"They will only be looked down upon."
Several nobles immediately stepped forward.
One of them struck his fist against his chest.
"Your Highness."
"Our loyalty belongs to Arcadia."
"We have no intention of betraying the Empire."
Another noble quickly nodded.
"My ancestors fought for this nation."
"My children will do the same."
"I would rather die than become a traitor."
A third noble stepped forward with a determined expression.
"No amount of wealth or promises can make us abandon our homeland."
"Our honor is worth far more."
The remaining nobles also voiced their agreement.
"We stand with the Empire."
"We will never betray Arcadia."
"Our loyalty will not waver."
Haster quietly listened to every word before giving a small nod of approval.
"I am pleased to hear that."
For a few moments, no one spoke.
The silence lingered until one elderly noble slowly stepped forward.
He respectfully bowed before asking,
"Your Highness."
"How do you plan to handle the matter of Marquise Marco's death?"
The question caused everyone inside the tent to pause.
Many quietly turned toward the corpse lying on the floor.
Haster glanced at it only once before answering calmly.
"We will announce that he died while fighting."
"There is no need to place additional burdens upon the army during wartime."
He paused briefly.
"As for his household we will deal with that matter after the war."
His tone remained completely composed. Finally, Haster looked around at everyone once more.
"All of you may return and take your rest."
"The sun is already shining upon us."
"The battle throughout the night has exhausted everyone."
"So we will not march ahead today."
The gathered nobles immediately bowed.
"As you command, Your Highness."
One after another, they quietly turned and left the command tent while soldiers outside slowly resumed their duties. Only the body of Marquise Marco remained behind, lying silently upon the cold ground as a grim reminder of the price of betrayal.
After the last noble slowly stepped out of the command tent, Crown Prince Haster remained standing exactly where he was while quietly watching their departing backs. His eyes calmly followed every single person until their figures gradually disappeared beyond the entrance. The pleasant smile that had remained on his face throughout the meeting slowly vanished, and what replaced it was a calm and unreadable expression that made the entire atmosphere inside the tent feel much heavier.
For several long moments, he did not utter a single word.
The silence lingered while only the distant sounds of soldiers moving around the camp could be heard from outside.
Finally, Haster slowly shifted his gaze toward one of the darker corners of the tent where no one seemed to be standing.
Without turning his body, he spoke in a low and steady voice.
"Keep an eye on every one of them."
The shadows beneath the nearby pillar suddenly rippled ever so slightly before returning to normal as though nothing had happened.
