When Ethan spun around, his heart nearly jumped out of his chest.
An eerie, inexplicable terror surged within him. This went beyond ordinary fear—it was a profound primal caution, akin to a ominous veil draped across the entire realm.
A pair of murderous eyes appeared to pierce from the shadows. Their stare seemed to dominate everything nearby from above.
Overwhelming pressure bore down relentlessly.
"Run!"
Ethan caught only that single command.
The masked killer responded in a flash. His form streaked back like a bolt of lightning, fleeing at breakneck pace.
"Trying to flee!" a serene voice resounded amid the gloom.
"In your dreams."
SWISH!
Suddenly, a hand emerged from the boundless void. It struck with such velocity that Ethan struggled to track it.
Mid-escape, the hand seized the assassin.
Before he could respond, the man's frame crashed headlong into the earth.
BOOOOOOM!
The collision rattled the entire field fiercely. Snow burst skyward while the icy soil splintered from the savage impact.
Like a spike driven into rock, the assassin's form lodged deeply into the terrain.
Ethan remained rooted in place.
Icy perspiration trickled down his spine gradually.
"Damn… what realm is this monster at? Who the hell is he?" Ethan whispered in stunned dread.
The power shown moments ago proved utterly horrifying.
The very assassin who had almost ended him earlier appeared utterly helpless before this newcomer.
Slowly, the figure emerged from the shadows.
Moonlight at last illuminated his features.
Ethan's eyes bulged wide in an instant.
"Duke Lancelot!" he exclaimed in astonishment.
He hastened ahead, halting several paces distant, then offered a deferential salute.
"It's good to see you, Your Highness."
Duke Lancelot remained composed, scrutinizing him steadily.
The elder duke's gaze swept Ethan top to bottom deliberately. It cut keenly, piercing as though scanning his very core.
Moments later, he gave a subtle nod.
"Hmmm… nearing fifty percent," he muttered contemplatively.
"Nearing Mystic Realm. Not bad. Not bad at all."
Ethan rubbed his head sheepishly. "Thanks for the praise, but it's worth nothing."
Duke Lancelot let out a soft laugh.
"Nah. Don't be humble."
He advanced and clapped Ethan's shoulder amiably.
"I like confident young people."
Ethan stood tall and inquired with curiosity.
"Your Highness… did you come here for Amber?"
Duke Lancelot shook his head faintly.
"No."
His eyes locked onto Ethan's directly.
"I am here exactly for you."
"Me?" Ethan furrowed his brow in bewilderment.
Shock etched plainly across his face.
Duke Lancelot nodded steadily.
Without another word, he lifted a hand gently. Two unseen powers yanked two forms over the frosted soil.
The corpses glided across the snow, halting right before them.
THUD!
These were the assassins.
The masked attacker from before got hurled harshly to the ground once more.
Duke Lancelot addressed them coolly.
"I have some connections with the Assassin Tower."
He eyed the prisoners fleetingly.
"They told me that someone posted a bounty on your head. The more you defeat, the more will come."
Ethan's eyes flew open wide.
"So I came running here as fast as possible," Duke Lancelot went on.
"There was a chance you might get killed tonight. It would not look good if a newly appointed Marquise died right after making contributions to the Empire."
Ethan's thoughts raced wildly.
Assassin?
Bounty?
What the fuck?
The actual fuck?
No mere shady outfit, the Assassin Tower stood as a formidable guild assembling top killers worldwide. Its base lay in the Empire of Morvath.
Ethan failed to grasp how he'd provoked anyone to unleash such a contract via that group.
Which bastard orchestrated this?
The demons perhaps?
Yet a new idea struck him.
Would assassin towers accept jobs from demons?
Ethan regarded Duke Lancelot gravely.
"Your Highness… Do you know who is behind this?"
Duke Lancelot shook his head deliberately.
"Sadly, I don't."
His face grew somewhat grave.
"The Assassin Tower is extremely secretive. Information about contracts is hidden carefully."
He halted briefly, then proceeded.
"One can only learn such things if they defeat the Leader and the Elders of the tower themselves."
Chilly gusts swept the battlefield anew as those words hung in the night air.
For a few tense seconds, Ethan stayed utterly silent, digesting every word he'd just heard. Icy gusts swept over the battlefield, drifting snow lazily across the shattered terrain. The downed assassin lay motionless close by, half-entombed in ice and rubble.
Slowly, Ethan massaged his brow and raised his gaze to Duke Lancelot.
"Your Highness… does that mean more assassins will come?" Ethan inquired gravely.
Duke Lancelot showed no delay.
"Yes."
His response arrived steady and direct, devoid of any sugarcoating.
"More will come."
He cast a quick look at the unconscious assassin sprawled on the ground, then pressed on.
"Once a bounty is posted in the Assassin Tower, it rarely disappears until the target is killed."
Spoken straightforwardly, those words carried a grave undertone.
Ethan released a slow breath and pressed his temple.
"So they will just keep sending people?"
Duke Lancelot inclined his head faintly.
"Yes. Different assassins will accept the mission."
He halted briefly before appending in a composed manner.
"That is simply how their system works."
Ethan sighed softly and shook his head.
"What a pain in the ass…"
Once more, he glanced down at the masked assassin on the ground.
"So this guy was just the first one."
A subtle smile touched Duke Lancelot's face.
"More or less."
"But there are rules they follow," he continued, clasping his hands behind his back once again.
Ethan snapped his head up right away.
"Rules?"
"Yes."
Duke Lancelot kept his voice casual while clarifying.
"The Assassin Tower could never have existed for so long if they acted recklessly. They have certain boundaries they rarely cross."
A light frown formed on Ethan's face as he crossed his arms.
"And what kind of rules are those?"
