From a window within the count’s estate, Yelena pointed with thrill. “Look, Lumine—they’re starting another round of fireworks!”
“Yeah,” Lumine responded, flashing a faint smile he failed to hold for long.
Tonight, both donned the customary robes sported by everyone. Gold adorned Lumine’s, green graced Yelena’s.
In it, she struck Lumine as utterly adorable—yet breathtakingly beautiful.
He longed to praise her, but the sheer embarrassment held him back. Since confessing his emotions to himself, sustaining eye contact grew tougher, leaving him rattled by the tiniest details.
Fortunately, his turmoil escaped her notice.
Yet despite their attire, why hadn’t they ventured outside the estate?
Neither possessed the spirit to join the festivities. Yelena’s room provided a serene, cozy refuge instead.
It stung, but no choice remained.
That dinner’s horror...
The savage sight of Caleus’s hand bursting that man’s head haunted Lumine and Yelena endlessly, replaying without mercy. Their festival enthusiasm had utterly evaporated.
Thankfully, fireworks sparked a bit of recovery.
Yelena far more than Lumine.
Prior to the dinner—before Caleus slaughtered that man—death had crossed Lumine’s path only once, right before his eyes.
...But no prior demise matched this one’s ferocity. Its savagery. Its utter senselessness.
The mere thought of the gore—the brain fragments spraying—threatened to choke him anew, yet he held his face neutral and body rigid. Yelena was rediscovering sparks of delight, and he wouldn’t shatter them—least of all after the ordeals she’d suffered through him.
Lumine yearned to relish the fireworks with her same fervor.
Yet he kept the main quests secret from her—the ones that popped up in his vision seven hours earlier, quests impossible to refuse.
They crowded his thoughts.
A heavy burden indeed.
On top of the terror from witnessing Caleus's brutal killing just to set an example, the system now pushed Lumine to become a figure the Great Clans would truly respect.
…He wondered if he could shoulder such pressure.
But options were scarce.
The system offered none.
And with its rising intensity, things looked set to worsen. Failure on these quests meant death, thanks to the crippling penalties.
…Indeed. He simply needed to win over the world's most powerful figures—those ruling it now or destined to—without forging foes.
Particularly not among the two heirs he must oppose.
Certain objectives struck him as odd, however.
Apparently, Lioren turning hostile was acceptable, but not Caleus?
In Lumine's eyes, Caleus stood as the craziest—the most repulsive after his actions. Still, Lioren chilled him more. Words failed to capture it, but that prince...
He resembled something inhuman.
Like a creature cloaked in flesh—triggering deep primal dread.
Then came the directive on Celestina.
Why stress avoiding enmity with her above all?
Lumine had no plans to. He even sensed her favor already. But why single out Celestina? Caleus's threat was clear—he could strike fatally. Celestina seemed different.
And regarding power, volatility, raw lunacy... thankfully, she lagged behind the leaders.
Quite peculiar.
The Heavenly Knight Jegudiel followed suit. Lumine knew little, just his role as the Saintess’s devoted guardian.
Danger lurked everywhere.
Yet the task that unnerved Lumine most was Jasmine's—befriending her or drawing nearer.
He couldn't pinpoint why, but the mere idea sent shivers through him.
The window stood ajar. Fireworks boomed on outside, painting the night sky in vivid bursts.
Yes. Strange and perilous both.
Thoughts of Jasmine inevitably led to Azriel.
Curiously, every royal earned a mention—except Azriel.
Why command respect from Vioren, Hioren, Veronica, but skip Azriel? If anyone besides the heirs deserved alliance, friendship, true regard...
Azriel topped that list.
…Lumine already fumed over missing dinner chances to talk, much less challenge him on key matters.
This omission only stoked his suspicions.
Why?
Did the system overlook Azriel...?
Why act as if he vanished?
A cold dread gripped Lumine’s heart.
Opportunity loomed close.
Yet only seventeen hours remained for these impossible feats.
And right on schedule, the fireworks dimmed at last.
The spectacle ended. A fresh drama now unfolded.
