Ding Hui’s hopes sank when the elderly man offered no response. The old man’s Gu Worm had piqued her curiosity significantly.
"A true shame..." she murmured, her disappointment evident. Turning away, she rejoined Monk Quan Heng, her decision made.
"It’s best not to stray," Monk Quan Heng cautioned in a low voice. "There are individuals within the An Mansion whose power even I cannot match; their cultivation is unfathomable."
Ding Hui offered a slight nod. This was hardly surprising. Among the Ten Great Families, it was almost a given that hidden cultivators would surpass Monk Quan Heng. Ding Hui wasn't the least bit astonished.
In fact, Monk Quan Heng’s current level of strength, given his age, was the truly astonishing aspect – a genuine prodigy among prodigies.
After a moment’s reflection, Ding Hui inquired, "And the medicinal materials?"
"I’ve already made arrangements for them to be prepared," he replied. It was clear that Monk Quan Heng still held considerable sway within the An Mansion.
"That elderly man," Ding Hui said, pointing, "assist me in inquiring about him."
Monk Quan Heng glanced in the direction Ding Hui indicated, a slight frown creasing his brow.
"He is one of the distinguished guests of the An Mansion. It appears he moved in just a few days ago. I’m not acquainted with him, but I will attempt to gather information later. For now, let us proceed towards the Soothing Spirit Pillar."
The mention of the Soothing Spirit Pillar instantly invigorated Ding Hui. The allure of the Ten Pillars was undeniable for her.
They departed.
Meanwhile, by the small pond, the elderly man who had been fishing began to pack up his fishing rod.
"Master..." his attendant spoke softly, an icy glint in his eyes.
"Refrain from any rash actions. This is the Da Xia Dynasty, not our territory. Do you wish for our complete ruin?"
"..."
The elderly man let out a sigh.
"Your youth prevents you from understanding... just how terrifying the Da Xia Dynasty truly is!"
...
"Master Quan Heng!"
"Indeed, it is Master Quan Heng!"
"Master Quan Heng, when might you have the time to discuss Buddhism with me again?"
"Master Quan Heng! Your teachings on Buddhist scriptures last time were incredibly helpful. My sister has been sleeping soundly every night, and her Spirit has seen remarkable improvement!"
As they passed, a chorus of greetings followed Monk Quan Heng. Logically, considering Monk Quan Heng hadn't resided in Thunder City or the An Mansion for a considerable duration, his ability to win over so many people so quickly was, in a sense, a remarkable talent.
Ding Hui shifted her gaze from Monk Quan Heng beside her, contemplating the individuals they had just encountered.
"Are they all guests at the An Mansion? Similar to yourself?" she inquired softly.
"Yes," he confirmed.
"Intriguing. The An Mansion is indeed orchestrating a grand affair!" Ding Hui remarked with a smile.
Monk Quan Heng’s brow furrowed slightly, though he seemed disinclined to elaborate on the matter.
"The Soothing Spirit Pillar’s location is just ahead. Without the explicit consent of the An Family’s Patriarch, I can only observe from a distance..."
Before Monk Quan Heng could finish his sentence, he abruptly halted, as if spotting someone.
"Lord Duan."
Following Monk Quan Heng’s line of sight, Ding Hui observed a figure clad in a black robe, accompanied by several attendants, walking past.
The pitch-black robe seemed to absorb all ambient light, rendering the wearer’s features utterly indiscernible. Ding Hui watched with rapt attention, pondering the method behind such a feat.
Step!
The black-robed individual suddenly stopped, as though encountering something utterly unbelievable, their gaze locking directly onto their position!
Despite appearing as merely a void, Ding Hui felt an intense sensation – as if she could perceive within that darkness a visage frozen in shock, surprise, and even bewilderment! It was a visualization of emotion, an ability to glean information.
In reality, all that resided within the black robe was darkness, not a discernible person.
Ding Hui turned to look at Monk Quan Heng, who stood beside her.
How strange. Was Monk Quan Heng’s presence here truly so astonishing to that individual? Given Monk Quan Heng's composed demeanor, they must have crossed paths before.
Could it be... that this shock wasn't directed at Monk Quan Heng, but rather... at me?
A realization dawned upon Ding Hui. Her eyes flickered, and as Monk Quan Heng, caught off guard, reached to grasp her wrist, Ding Hui had already taken a step forward.
"Esteemed Lord Duan..." she began.
Before she could complete her sentence, the black-robed figure turned abruptly and departed, presenting only their retreating back. The An Family’s servants quickly regained their composure and hurried to follow.
This group had materialized from nowhere and vanished just as swiftly.
Ding Hui gazed at the receding figure of the black-robed person, a slight frown forming, a sense of puzzlement settling upon her. She was certain she had never set foot in the An Mansion before and thus had no prior acquaintances within its walls.
Unless, perhaps, some old acquaintances had managed to infiltrate the An Mansion through medical means during her years away from Thunder City.
Though she had accumulated a number of adversaries in Thunder City, her reputation wasn't so dire that she could never reveal her true countenance.
"Esteemed Master Quan Heng, was Lord Duan also a distinguished visitor of the An Mansion?"
"No, from what I comprehend, Lord Duan has been a revered guest at the An Mansion for an extended period, not merely in recent times."
"...Do you have any knowledge of his origins?"
"I am uncertain, but... as I previously stated, there exist individuals within the An Mansion whose profoundness eludes my understanding. Lord Duan is precisely one such person."
Monk Quan Heng murmured, "Master Ding, the Soothing Spirit Pillar is just ahead. As per our accord, refrain from any impetuous actions."
"Rest assured, I am well aware of my own boundaries."
Boom!
Abruptly, a lightning strike manifested from an unforeseen sky.
As if heavenly thunder was invoked, a searing bolt of lightning directly impacted the Soothing Spirit Pillar situated ahead!
Tendrils of electrical discharge coursed frantically across the peculiar engravings adorned with dragon and phoenix motifs, resembling a surging tempest, rapidly diminishing in brilliance.
Monk Quan Heng ceased his discourse, guiding Ding Hui onward.
"Master Quan Heng."
"Master Quan Heng, kindly halt your progress. It appears the Family Head had not made arrangements for your visit today."
