Oliver relived a nightmarish vision of gangsters gunning down Maya, Linda, and his other women in a brutal ambush after he ordered their boss crippled, watching helplessly as they died. He jolted awake drenched in sweat inside a dark, locked room overlooking a dense forest. Banging on the unyielding door, he agonized over his apparent kidnapping and the fate of his mother, sister, and Aunt Anna, until the lock suddenly clicked.

Soon enough, they arrived at a private office, presenting a luxurious appearance compared to the rest of the police station. A desk crafted from expensive wood dominated the space, a wall of books lined a bookcase, and a large window offered a view of the city streets below.

Two inviting sofas faced each other in the room's center, with a small coffee table between them adorned with plates of snacks.

Seated on one of the couches was a middle-aged woman. Her blue police shirt strained against her chest, drawing attention to her ample cleavage.

Her black skirt, equally form-fitting, ended just below her buttocks, leaving her thick thighs exposed as she wore no stockings, contributing to her alluring appearance.

Her silver-white hair was styled in a bun, and a pair of red-rimmed glasses graced her beautiful face, complemented by light makeup that enhanced her attractive features.

Upon their entrance, she stood and offered them a brief smile. "It's a pleasure to see you again, Mr. John, and to meet you for the first time, Mr. Oliver. I am Lauren, the chief of police in this district."

Lauren extended her hand to shake with both men, then gestured for them to take a seat on the sofa before occupying the one opposite.

As soon as the chief was seated, her gaze fell upon Oliver, whom she thoroughly examined from head to toe. Her sharp eyes seemed to pierce right through him, as if she could discern his entire being with a single glance.

This scrutiny made Oliver uneasy, sensing a distinct shift in her demeanor the moment she sat down, judging by her comportment.

The young man cleared his throat, breaking the palpable silence. "Chief Lauren, how may I assist you?"

The chief shook her head and waved dismissively. "Oh, there's no need for concern, Mr. Oliver. Mr. John has informed me of the situation, and the aftermath has already been managed. You needn't trouble yourself with what happens next."

Oliver frowned, sensing something amiss in the chief's conduct. "Then why did you wish to see me, Chief Lauren? You must have had a reason for inviting me here today."

The chief nodded and looked towards John. Understanding her unspoken request, he rose from his seat, excusing himself. "I'll wait outside, Mr. Oliver."

Once the door clicked shut behind him, Lauren leaned forward, her eyes meeting Oliver's with a serious intensity. "Very well, let's be direct, Mr. Oliver. I am one of the individuals beholden to the Ashfords in this city. Consequently, I am, in essence, under your influence as well."

"I'm not entirely sure I follow..." Oliver began, uncertain of the conversation's direction.

"Oh, I believe you grasp my meaning, Mr. Oliver. Every influential figure in the city employs police officers to manage their illicit activities, ensuring cover-ups and the efficient disposal of inconvenient matters. That is simply how the world operates." The chief explained, then produced a cigarette and lit it with a match, placing it between her lips. "Now that you are poised to inherit your family's wealth and enterprises, I shall extend my allegiance to you as well."

She continued after taking a long inhale of her cigarette. "Naturally, my services are not rendered without compensation. You understand, do you not?" Smoke wisped from her mouth with each word.

"I comprehend now, Chief," Oliver stated, the situation becoming clearer. "So you summoned me here to discuss the 'arrangements' for our future collaboration?"

Lauren offered a smirk and nodded in agreement. "Precisely, Mr. Oliver. There are indeed a few 'arrangements' I have in contemplation."

Her smirk vanished as she extinguished her cigarette, her expression turning grave. "As you are aware, Mr. Oliver, this city is rife with corruption, crime, violence, and all their associated elements. Therefore, I implore you not to act rashly, as you did today by incapacitating influential individuals without considering the potential repercussions."

She then fixed her gaze directly upon the young man. "Because should an event similar to today's occur again, its concealment or dismissal will prove considerably more challenging. Do you understand, Mr. Oliver?"

Oliver let out a sigh, acknowledging the truth in her words. He hadn't truly considered the repercussions before deciding to break that man's limbs. Had he thought things through, he might have avoided creating such a spectacle that ultimately escalated the entire situation.

It was precisely that fleeting moment of impulsiveness and fury that put everyone in danger, forcing them to flee in their car while under fire. It was certainly not an ideal predicament.

"Alright, Chief, I understand. It won't happen again," Oliver pledged, leaning back against the sofa with his arms crossed. "Is there anything else requiring our attention? If not, I'd prefer to head home now, Chief Lauren."

Lauren took another pull from her cigarette, exhaling a cloud of smoke before meeting Oliver's gaze with a smoldering look. "No, Mr. Oliver. We can delve into other matters at a later juncture. It would be beneficial to reconvene perhaps next week."

With her statement concluded, Lauren rose and extended her hand for a handshake, which Oliver reciprocated as he also stood.

"I'll be in touch soon, Chief," Oliver stated before exiting the room, leaving Lauren to gaze intently at his retreating form.

"Mr. John, I've concluded my discussion with the Chief," Oliver informed the lawyer who was waiting for him outside. "We're departing now."

John gave a slight nod. "Very well. The vehicles are prepared, Mr. Oliver. Let's make our exit."
