The little Djiva, satisfied, curled up again over her leg. This time, however, she did not fall asleep immediately. She remained watching the two of them, her small eyes moving from one face to the other, as if she were studying them.
First Gao Ziyue, then Kyrian, then Gao Ziyue again. Her eyes seemed extremely attentive, processing information that no one else could understand.
Kyrian slowly extended a finger, moving carefully so as not to frighten the creature.
Djiva brought her snout closer, her little nose twitching as she sniffed. Then, slowly, she touched his finger with her head, a gesture that was both a greeting and an acceptance.
Kyrian remained motionless, surprised by the creature’s trust.
"She’s not afraid of you." Gao Ziyue smiled, her eyes shining with a soft light.
"Maybe she recognizes you."
"Me?"
"You helped choose her name. And you were there when she was born. For such a young creature, that might mean more than we realize."
Kyrian thought for a moment, considering her words.
"Then maybe she really does recognize me."
He gently stroked the little creature’s head, his fingers tracing soft patterns over her scales.
Djiva did not pull away. On the contrary, she closed her eyes, a gesture of trust that was both simple and profound.
Gao Ziyue watched the scene, her eyes moving over Kyrian’s face, the way he touched Djiva so naturally, the way the little creature seemed so safe in his presence.
A strange feeling warmed her chest, a sensation she could not completely name. It was difficult to explain, a mixture of joy, surprise, and something else, something she did not want to examine too closely.
Just a few hours earlier, she had been alone amid a crowd of people who did not know her, surrounded by faces that saw only the Heir of the Sky. Now, she was sitting in a small tavern, with Djiva on her leg and Kyrian sitting across from her, on a night that seemed to have lasted an eternity and an instant at the same time.
It was simple. Extremely simple. But it had been a long time since she had felt so calm, so at peace.
She lowered her eyes, her voice softer than usual.
"Kyrian."
"Hmm?"
"Thank you."
He raised his gaze, his violet eyes meeting hers.
"For what?"
She took several seconds to answer, choosing her words carefully.
"For today. For coming with me, for listening to me, for choosing her name with me."
Kyrian looked at Djiva, who was now asleep again, and then at Gao Ziyue.
"I enjoyed it too."
"What?"
"The night."
She smiled, a smile that was pure gratitude.
"Me too."
For a few moments, neither of them spoke, the silence between them filled only by the crackling of the fireplace, the conversations around them, and the clinking of utensils against plates.
The fireplace continued crackling in the background, the flames dancing in a hypnotic rhythm. The conversations around them continued, a background melody that was both familiar and comforting. Utensils touched plates, someone laughed near the counter, and a child ran between the tables.
Everything remained the same.
But, to them, the moment seemed isolated from the rest of the world, a bubble of intimacy amid the movement of the hall.
Gao Ziyue picked up a candied fruit, its surface gleaming with a layer of spiritual sugar. She bit into it, and the coating cracked softly between her teeth, a sound that was both satisfying and inviting.
Then, she looked at Kyrian, her eyes shining with a mischievous light.
"Try it."
She picked up another fruit and extended it toward him, her fingers delicately holding the little sweet.
Kyrian did not think much. He leaned forward and took the fruit directly from her fingers, his lips lightly brushing against her skin as he bit into the treat.
Gao Ziyue froze, her fingers remaining suspended for a moment. Their eyes met, a moment of contact that seemed to last longer than it should have.
Her face turned red, a blush spreading rapidly.
Kyrian, apparently unaware of the significance of the gesture, calmly chewed, savoring the fruit.
"Good."
Gao Ziyue withdrew her hand, her fingers still tinged with the warmth of the contact.
"You..."
She did not finish the sentence, the words escaping before she could find them.
Kyrian tilted his head, an expression of genuine curiosity on his face.
"What?"
She took a deep breath, feeling her heart beating faster.
"Nothing."
A small smile appeared on her lips, a smile that was more for herself than for him. Perhaps it was better this way. She did not need to think too much, did not need to analyze every gesture, every word, every moment. Not that night.
That night, she only wanted to enjoy it.
Gao Ziyue leaned back in her chair, her body relaxing against the wooden backrest. Djiva was asleep again on her leg, her little body rising and falling with each breath. Kyrian continued eating, his movements calm and natural.
The food was warm. The fireplace crackled. And the night of the Sky Caravan continued slowly moving forward outside, oblivious to the moment unfolding inside that small tavern.
For the first time in a long time, Gao Ziyue did not want time to pass quickly. She wanted to remain there, at that table, in that tavern, beside that young man. Without titles, without responsibilities, without having to hide who she was.
And Kyrian, although he still did not completely understand the feeling emerging within him, was in no hurry to leave either.
The night still had plenty of time. And, while little Djiva slept peacefully on the leg of her new mother, the two continued talking, eating, and discovering, little by little, that sometimes the simplest moments could become the most important memories.
Time passed, the dishes gradually emptied, and the conversations continued flowing naturally. The wine had partially dissipated, but the feeling of well-being remained. Outside, the Sky Caravan continued to live beneath the lights of the night.
And, inside Lunavinc Tavern, two young people continued sitting side by side, in no hurry for the night to end.
